@LukeBerto in my opinion, no matter how close a transcription is, doing one of great players such as gadd is missing the point. great musical performances like you get with Gadd are meant to be enjoyed, not copied. indeed, one can only get so close to the exact feel he lays down. transcriptions inevitably cause players to focus on the sticking alone, instead of working with the musical feel as well. that being said, i am in no way implying that all transcriptions are bad. it's never a bad thing
@pettyws you're perfectly right, but I think transcription are useful to understand what is played. Obviously understand music became easier since youtube... The great drummer Elio Rivagli said that today young drummer understand music more with their eyes that with their ears. It's true that hearing must be educated, but sometimes it's nice to see the chops a great drummer uses.
this is my favorite gadd video (and believe me, i've seen a hell of a lot. gadd's hard to NOT watch. every time i get on youtube. for hours.) anyway, like everyone says, the man's a true musician, on an instrument that sadly doesn't get many true musicians. i loveee that you can hear his grunts and "ah"s on this vid too. great insight into what's going on in that rhythmically-wired mind of his. incredible.
@pettyws you are a Gadd-fan, so can you give me your impression about my other video about him? It is Lucky 13, played by the Gadd Gang, with a beautiful solo transcribed. I would like to know if the experiment of matching a transcription and the video can be useful...
Wow! His accuracy is phenomenal. I bought my first kit yesterday, for my small studio. A mellow yellow recording custom. Getting delivered tomorrow! Is this a recording custom he's playing do we think? Educate me. It's a dryness of sorts i seek, but the note has to be fat as hell for the duration of it's sustain (albeit relatively short for recording). I'm not a drummer myself but do appreciate fine things, such as this little performance.
@jerrysteinberg you found the wrong video for emulate a sound I think... Steve has his unique fat sound made with tight heads... It's his secret touch that makes all possible.
You can try however to use rings on tom and snare (like Him in this video), mufflings in the bassdrum (a blanket woks perfectly)... Also moongel for toms are usefull
if you want a '80 sound like snare, you should try to place a reverse drumhead on the snare and play on it
@LukeBerto Thank you! Lots of learning, listening and experimenting going on here in the room since the kit arrived (dampening, tuning etc.) . Not so much about emulating Steve (impossible i think!), rather just wanted to drop some appreciation as well as being excited about the kit arriving! I have moongels and will try a blanket in the bass drum tomorrow. Cheers!
My dad told me when i started playing drums the most important thing is to keep in the pocket. Steve Gadd has the grooviest most soulfully played pocket ever, he is my favorite drummer in the world and his notes and strokes are that of pure genius.
I just consider myself to be one of the lucky few who came across this gem. Thanks for posting it. Its one of the most unique performances Ive seen. Way cool.
Hopefully people with Travis-mania on their little minds can see what a real musician can do with a drum set ... and it doesn't even float in space... altho Steve's energy could lift any kind of kit!
I always love watching him dance on the drums. So much for 100% correct posture, he basically lifts himself off the set when he uses the bass pedal. Personally I don't play like that, but who am I to judge this master?
"He's been playing non-stop for nearly 3 hours now! Several times we tried to make him have a break - without success. He just won't stop! We called for the ambulance, and two white dressed guys are waiting for him with a straight-jacket...."
Luke, hi!!! Listen my friend (and this is w/ all due respect), you've GOT to change tags or do whatever else that the shorter versions of this vid are doing to get the views. (See "Steve Gadd - Zildjian Day 1987" - ten times the #.) A CRIME, since this complete vid (thank you!) is a whole "song," showing so completely how Gadd imposes his feel, dynamics, depth, creativity, and sense of structure onto a piece. (Even a solo drums piece.)
Wow. I'm just *floored* every time I see this whole vid...
Who cares? When I posted this video I did in order to make "youtube more complete", not in order to have the most requested vid on internet... I'm glad to let someone find this video, someone deeply interested in Steve Gadd's drumming. Now I add some tags, but the real problem is that Steve Gadd is the most filmed drummer in history...
@LukeBerto, you're right, absolutely -- the idea is to just be happy you put it here, and I am, thank you. I hope you didn't take offense, and I'm sorry if implied anything negative. Certainly not intended that way! It's actually praise for having posted the best version of this video. I'm just mystified by the way YouTube works sometimes, in that so much crap gets watched, yet the best vids are not viewed as much. That's all. But there are bigger problems in the world, definitely. ;-)
No problem, I didn't take offense, I understand your disappoint, because I had same feelings... But now I simply do not care: the video is great, few people find it and everybody like it: for me that's ok. In italian there is a perfect expression for this situation: "pochi, ma buoni" => "few people, but good" in some way.. Much better than having tons of idiots that could stupidly argue..
Mastering the art of 2 and 4, no one else could make it sound the same.... I think Gadd's tap-dancing background must help him to feel the rhythm at all times.
@eskimoposh It's important to understand the diversity that can be expressed through an instrument. I personally LOVE Gadd's playing. Hell, he's one of my biggest influences, and when I sit down and play, I play like him, but, that doesn't change the fact that I still watch Thomas and Virgil in awe. They push the limits of what man can do, and I'm sure that we won't see another drummer reach their levels for a long time. All drummers have their place, and should be respected.
I just cannot get over this performance. It has everything: groove, dynamics, technique, structure, feeling, musicality. I mean, he's doing all of this in the context of a song running through his head, obviously, and that's one of the things that makes him great, his emphasis on the music... on the song. So, my question: how in the HELL does this video have only ~400 views over 2.5 months? It's among the best displays of drumming on the internet! It should be required viewing for all drummers!
The answer could be that Steve Gadd is the most filmed drummer in history, so the web is full of His stuff.. This performance is great but it has a great competition..
On the other hand Rabb & Greb video reached ~1000 views in 1 month, probably because there is only one other video featuring these 2 drummers...
I'm happy you appreciate this video and I'm sure you will like my next work (with His Majesty Steve Gadd on "Lucky13")
my friend you are absolutely right.Since many people have drummers like lars ulrich or joey jordison or however his name is for gods what are you waiting?Steve gadd is the best......
This is a matter of tastes... I can't say that loving Lars Ulrich or Joey Jordison's way of drumming is wrong (however do not underestimate this 2 guys..). If you love metal they are you gods. In any case Steve Gadd is on another planet, beyond every musical taste. Every drummer should appreciate him, He is the groovemaster. Almost only barker's fan can't appreciate any other drummer than him.. This is fanatism, and I hate it.
Thanks so much for sharing this whole video. I saw this when it first came out, and since then have considered this one of the greatest displays ever of drumming brilliance, musicality, and groove.
I have the same opinion and I was very disappointed when I didn't found this video on Youtube, so I've uploaded it.. Another video for the most filmed drummer in history!
Stay tuned for the funniest moment of Benny Greb and Johnny Rabb's exhibition at Meinl festival
I've known from a friend of mine, who has played on Gadd's drumset, that he uses very tense heads and it's incredible how he gets this fat sound from them
