  • This should be compulsory listening for all aspiring trad players.

  • Thank you very much. He has inspired a lot of musicians. When I listen to him, I have feeling I hear Jean-Michel Veillon. I know he learnt a lot from Matt Molloy.

  • Who's the douche that disliked this? o_O

  • @00Braskicker Mr douche

  • Aside from the fabulous technique - a combination of gentleness and dynamics - Mr Molloy uses the upper harmonics of the lower octave to give enormous power to the low notes. This is the growl that you hear. It is the same technique used in the middle eastern flutes. He is a true artist.

  • @billyo2009 Yes the low notes are very good ...which was the hallmark of the best players in the 50s/ early 60s. ( Moloney, Cooley, Carty, O'Loughlin , Preston , Taylor , McDonagh and others. Many subsequently tried to achieve this without the appropriate blowing technique ....so the 'octave effect'' was born! Also he had wonderful timing in his ornamentation.

  • He has been my landlord, my employer and my friend, the only thing that sets us apart is that I am his fan always!

  • wow~ wonderful wooden sounds!!

    thanks for sharing it.

  • thats what i call some one who puts there heart and soul into the music fantastic well done xx

  • brilliant ;)

  • Wow! You Irish people have Greate music!!!

  • Can you tell me where this was recorded? Also, is there a recording of this piece on disc? Thank you!

  • I'm not sure if it's on one of their albums, but search for "Colonel Fraser", sometimes spelled Frasier, Frazier. One of my fave recordings of it is by another Irish trad group called Lunasa.

  • I think it's on one of his albums, not sure which though... google would probably illuminate us....

  • Colonel "Frazer" is more correct.

  • he is amazing!! i know him well!

  • Lucky :(

  • i live in the same town as him!

  • That's awesome! Someday I plan to go and hopefully meet him over in his pub or something.

  • I was just in Westport a couple weeks ago, and he happened to be in town. unfortunately he wasn't up for a session that night at his pub, after all he just got back from touring spain. I still caught a great session though, you should definitely check it out regardless whether he's there or not.

  • True, true.. I do, of course want to meet him someday, though, being a big influence on my flute playing

  • he's brilliant. and he is an absoloutely lovely person, and his pub is great craic

  • you live in westport?

    beautiful town :)

  • Mm, it's gorgeous :)

  • i agree completely. ill definitely spend more time there next time i make my way over to ireland again. whats the best/cheapest/most fun way to stay. also, westport's not a gaeltach is it?

  • Nope, it's not a gaeltacht, but there's a lot of Irish speakers here! Well, camping on Bertra beach would most definitely be the most fun and cheapest way!! But you could stay in my guesthouse if you like :L

  • you have a guesthouse?? like a Bed and Breakfast, or your personal?

  • master

  • That's amazing

  • I wish I could play like that.

  • Oh Mann! Zu keiner Musik auf dieser Welt wird mein Herz mal so schwer und dann wieder so leicht! Gebt mir mehr davon! Danke/Thanks!
