you got the wrong bullets if he ran off with two 45-70's in him. use the 500 grain bullets, they will rip thru everyting in North America and most of Africa. Big game hunters use the 45-70 and score tons of single shot kills on hippos, rhinos, kodiak bears, crocs, polar bears, bull moose so it makes perfect sense that you had a pig still running around that was hit twice. Plus in a panic you can hold the Marlin rifle on him more steady and get follow on shots quicker too.

I have shot plenty of them in Florida with a Pietta 1858 Stainless Buffalo percussion revolver loaded with 40gr of 777 powder, a wad and a .454 141gr ball. This load chronographs at 1250fps/450ftlbs and drops them like a bad habit. Have not lost one yet! Shot placement is the key even if you are using a 300 Win mag if you don't hit them in the vitals you are not going to stop them. Their vitals are up front and not behind the shoulder like a deer. Behind the shoulder shot will not work on hogs.

Saw another episode tonite. Hunter shot black hog down - found alive next day with two 45-70 hits and it charged them.  Four bullet holes later the big bad boar was dead.

Shooting hogs is like shooting movie monsters... you just pump bullets in and keep shooting before they die.
