He started playing wiith five strings in open G around 1968 after Ry Cooder showed him, long before he had arthiritis in his fingers (and don't ask Ry Cooder about 'Honky Tonk Women').
This isn't a dig, I love the Stones (well up to 1973 anyways) and I'm English and so is Keef, a Dartford in Kent boy (Jagger too).
brilliant song and great pictures that i haven't seen before. especially interesting is the pic of Keith Richards hand at 1:31. has he got arthritis? or are his hands that way on the first knuckles, from years of playing guitar? amazing picture though. thank you.
thanks for that. it would be awful to think he wouldn't be able to play for much longer due to arthritis. i have often noticed his fingers being quite distorted. and he has said in interviews that his hands are wrecked with playing the guitar.
@michelle88960 He have arthritis. That is the reason why he play 5 string guitar in open G tuning, actually. To make it easy on his fingers. Strange how greatest innovations comes as side product of struggling to make it right of ones who become unable to work like normal persons.
@TheDaorson Actually he plays 5 string because he mastered a certain riff along the ways, that has distinguished his style. his fingers on that particular photo certainly look arthritic, however that is not why he plays 5 string. Read his book "LIFE" by Keith Richards. It is a fantastic book about his life, his journey in music and his addictions.
@kathieropele He never claim he play in open G tuning because of arthritis, actually, he never admit he have that problem at all. But that is the reason if you stop to think a little bit. Keith was always very serious about his image ,so you can´t expect to talking in interview about his weakness :-)
However, playing wast majority of chords with only two fingers don´t make him bad guitarist. It is his advantage!
thank you for the information regarding Keith Richards arthritis. such a shame though as arthritis is painful. but it is as you say, greatest innovations come around by accident, e.g. Alexander Flemming who discovered penicillin. not a musical comparison, but shows that mistakes are just really fortunate accidents. i think Keith Richards actually answered that when asked what his biggest mistake was, he didn't believe in mistakes, just lucky accidents.
