Because people believe (probably because it's what they've been told & never thought otherwise) that the only way to participate in the world & express their opinion and change the future is through democracy. They find it so important it becomes personal. They'll scream at you if you challenge their democracy.
That's my guess, anyway.
There's other ways to change the future, & in the end it doesn't take a lot of thought. Just action.
