this movie is old and the idea of union is also old..workers have government labor laws to protect them and there is a 401k to set up for retirement save the money you pay in union dues and dues check off and put it in your 401k and when you go to retire you wont be told sorry the money disappered
There was some REAL daring in Hollywood in the 1970's, as typlified by movies like this one. I mean...can you IMAGINE movie like this getting made today? Fat chance!
With prices going up companies look for cheap alternatives. I am taking about subcontracting, shipping jobs over seas, cheaper labor. To many unions don't speak up until it is to late.
The UNION is the reason why almost all the manufacturing in the United States has moved to Mexico, South America, and China! Trust me, I know what I am talking about; because I was raised on a Textile Mill Village and worked in Textiles from age 16 to 25. Almost all the textile companies in my home county (Gaston County, Gastonia, NC) have closed their doors. Thank God I have a college degree and was able to get out of the mill.
oh and to keep your clothes from fading or bleeding colors to your skin. sort hard to do. however there are cheaper ways by using certain cancer causing chemicals that are banned in the us . not in china. you worry about lead on toys and dont even think about the chemicals on your clothes.
"Workers of the world unite; you have nothing to lose but your chains. "
What genius created that slogan? Why, it was Karl Marx!
If you don't want to end up in a sweat shop .... take advantage of your FREE public schools ... study hard, .... work hard, ... and you will most like end up successful.
No one is guaranteed happiness in America, ... but you are guaranteed the right to pursue it.
Excellent comment. Norma Rae is both a superb work of art and a needed reflection as long as corporations manage to control the way we live and think. We need another Norma Rae now!
And what happened to the entire textile industry after it was unionised? It went to Mexico and China. And what great things the unions have done for the city of Detroit. Meanwhile down south where there are few auto unions the auto industry is thriving. Keep up the great work! Just keep ruining the north so we can continue to get your jobs down south! : )
And there are very few if any corporations that are patriotic enough not to ship jobs overseas.... Are their ANY corporations that care about American workers? Really? Think.... what if Apple started making ipods in the USA....think about it.
The woman whose life inspired the 1979 film Norma Rae has died of cancer after struggling with her health insurance company, which had delayed her treatment. Crystal Lee Sutton was 68. She had struggled for several years with meningioma, a form of brain cancer.

How many textile jobs are left in Alabama in 2009? Unions work just the way Norma Rae's dad says they do at the beginning of the movie: union shows up, jobs go away. Priceless
I recently joined a union and I can tell you that even during these hard times I still have a job with benefits. Americans need to ask their elected officials to pass the employee free choice act which will make it easier for workers to bring unions into the work place.

fiask: You don't know what you're talking about. Jews are almost unfailingly a liberal group, and are especially sensitive to the notion of social injustice.
nicholas9999: Ever heard of Jewish marxists, bolsheviks or neo-conservatives ? Each year, Jewish lobbies acquire 1 billion $ of US foreign aid for Israel, a relatively prosperous country. That money should go to people who are starving. That suppose to be social justice ? Jews are intensely tribal group of people who like to be portrayed as do-gooders. Hence the Jewish union organizer.
fiask: Lol, yes, I have heard of them, but where are they??!!! The Jewish lobbies acquire money because Jews in the U.S. have friends there in Israel who are being bombed by Palestinians (whose land they stole 60 years ago). This makes those Jews in Israel afraid and so they put the arm on benefactors here in the U.S. It has nothing to do with "Jewish marxists" (whoever they are).
Did I say that Jewish lobbing has something to do with Marxism ? That was an example of Jewish participation in illiberal movements.
Allocating billions for 'friends' in Israel so they can bulldoze homes, torture and harass people confirms what I initially stated that Jews are tribal, self-centered elites of USA. If white South Africans formed in USA a group that is as cohesive and influential as Jews, today their apartheid would not only exist but expand just like Israel.
fiask: Jews are like anyone else!! Your attempt to create a feeling of "otherness" about Jews is your own particular axe to grind. "Tribal, self-centered elites" my ass, lol!
So you're implying there must be something wrong with me or I must have ulterior motives for pointing out the obvious regarding one particular group of people ? There are many things about Jews that are unique and unprecedented. That is again obvious.
fiask: It is NOT that Jews (like any separate ethnic group) don't have identifying features. It is that (to repeat) you're trying to create a feeling of "otherness," trying to induce feelings ot contempt and negative affect about them. It's not that Jews don't have bad and good things about their culture, it is that you are only talking about bad things. You're anti-Semitic, good buddy!
huh ? That was purely cynical remark. Jews are taught that gentiles irrationally hate them while their holly book Talmud professes racism and hate towards gentiles.
Pointing something negative about Nazi doesn't invoke accusations of antigermanism. Jewish bastards on the other hand can get away with anything by claiming antisemitism. Instead of facing justice, they get support of fellow Jews. Great and proven method of crating animosity..
fiask: Let me try to explain it to you: You continue to attempt to inculcate, induce and promote negative affect toward Jews as a group. You don't talk about "some Jews," you don't isolate particular Jews or groups of Jews. You're all about Jews in general being bad people, doing bad things, etc. That makes you an anti-Semitic person, or a person with an anti-Semitic attitude.
'You continue to attempt to inculcate, induce and promote negative affect toward Jews as a group.'
And you continue to equate criticism of Jews with irrational hatred. This is done notoriously in order to diver attention from Jewish racism and wrong doings. This is going to affect very negatively, as history shows, Jews that aren't harming anyone.
I did isolate the bastards from the rest.
Is criticizing American foreign policy or ignorance of Americans, irrational, hateful and Anti-American ?
fiask: Wow!! "This is going to affect very negatively, as history shows, Jews that aren't harming anyone." Lol, so now we are into a diverse group - some bad jews, but some okay ones, too?? What percent of Jews would you say "aren't harming anyone"???
"Is criticizing American . . .? " - Yes, it is irrational, if you don't then explore the distribution of, e.g., irrationality (and rationality) within the American population. Left as a single statement, it's dumb.
It's impossible to be precise therefore it's normal and rational to generalize. There's absolutely nothing inappropriate with taking notice of visible patterns of behavior or tendencies within a population and forming general principles.
'Distribution of irrationality'. That's just idiotic. Maybe nation wide statistical samples should be provided as well ? I can state that Americans are ignorant and if I provide examples and good arguments there's nothing anti-American or dumb about it.
fiask: You're employing a stereotype, LOL!! Stop it!
As to distribution of irrationality (and rationality): here I only mean that Americans, like anyone else, can be distributed as to intelligence (whatever that is).
We cannot make any progress if you're going to continue using stereotypes and fuzzy thinking!! It is imprecise and unscholarly!!
'Americans, like anyone else, can be distributed as to intelligence (whatever that is).'
Intelligence has no bearing on the level of ignorance within a given country. Life style, availability of independent and truthful media, censorship and quality of lower education do.
Israel destroyed American warship USS Liberty and committed a true act of war against US. Nobody in US was informed about it. Instead, numerous phony false flag operations are used to sell unjustified wars. That's ignorance.
fiask: "Intelligence has no bearing on the level of ignorance within a given country." LOL, do you ever read your sentences before you write them?? Apart from that your other statements are the result of some real imagination. Go jump in a lake. I'm out. Bye bye.
Look up the AFL-CIO, and SIEU. Don't forget to call your congressman/woman and tell him to keep on Pres-Elect Obama about his promise to pass the Employee Free Choice Act.

lol ok you obviously not very smart so let me cut this out.
First all the jobs that would have been lost if the companies went bankrupt for NOT outsourcing their jobs to a 3rd world country have been saved which ofcourse would have far exceeded the relativly few low paid jobs that were lost.
Outsourcing helped expand the bussiness meaning they need to hire more people for the functions that havent been outsourced in America, leadership positions, engineering designing and so on.
psych: I understand your analysis, but I wouldn't be so sure about your conclusions. The country is swamped with job loss, especially in small rural places, and it is incorrect to say that they are all low-skilled jobs. More than that, corporations wanted to play in the international market system. I agree that some outsourcing was necessary, but not to the extent that you make out. For example, your claim that those corporations would have been bankrupt is questionable.
That's the kind of narrow-minded thinking that allows Corporations to get away with what they do. So what, were supposed to live as slaves in these unskilled labor jobs. We should be able to have a decent life working these types of jobs. People are too busy watching Survivor or caring about movie and music stars personal lives to see that America is being stripped of jobs and our freedoms. Corporations need to realize without jobs, we don't buy their products, so eventually we all lose...
No, U.S. jobs went oversees so corporations can avoid labor, enviromental, and other legal regulations that unions and this country fought for. Bush's dream coming true.
No, U.S. jobs went oversees so corporations can avoid labor, enviromental, and other legal regulations that unions and this country fought for. Bush's dream coming true.
Obama is a globalist marxist puppet, He is a traitor to the united states. He is Scum.
Socialism is not the answer ,an honest monetry system is what is needed.
We have all seen this "unionism" before ,this socilaism --and it is all coming apart at the seams before our very eyes.
Go read a few books on Ausrrian Economics and Lassiarefaire economics you would then have some understanding above that of and idiot who gets his "indoctrination" from the idiot box(tv).
Hroark: Please don't rag on Obama before you've even seen what he does. Please. Also, find a good bonfire and put your books on Austrian Economics on there. We've now seen what an unregulated market environment can do in the wrong circumstances. It turns out it ain't pretty.
hroark: You are convinced of the rightness of your views. You are inflated with Mises, free-market crap, and Libertarianism. There's nothing I can do to convince you otherwise. The country has seen the growth of a greater and greater deregulation over time - and the results are now obvious. Sensible regulation is the answer. Nevertheless, I don't expect you to listen. Bye bye.
ummm no, take the UAW...they are the main reason GM is dieing...they want and want...and the fact union workers get lazy and the quality gose down. Union's are a sham...they fact you are a union worker and your protected...means i have seen more union worker sham out of work...Now I do think the company sould take care of its own, as Loyalty sould play a factor...but as for Unions I say no...do your job and dont bitch, There are far worse jobs for worse pay.

I'm not sure I like the message in this review. To me, it sounds like he's saying "we need unions inside every major corporation today". Dare I say, this is a bit too left-leaning?
We need someone to stand up to corporate America - our jobs are being sent overseas in droves, the ones that remain are limited and getting harder all the time - more work with less people and less tools with which to do it. Unions took a wrong path someplace but so did the corporations.
Well said. And I agree with you that corporations need people to stand up to them. I also hate that jobs are lost to countries overseas. I can't believe people took my comment so negatively. No one is immune to constructive critism. I wasn't being mean/rude thats for sure.

For example, your claim that those corporations would have been bankrupt is questionable.
nicholas9999 3 years ago

Too bad we don't have any factories to unionize anymore.
Maybe fastfood workers can create a union, but then again probably not, they don't got their green cards.

Obama is a globalist marxist puppet, He is a traitor to the united states. He is Scum.
Socialism is not the answer ,an honest monetry system is what is needed.
We have all seen this "unionism" before ,this socilaism --and it is all coming apart at the seams before our very eyes.
Go read a few books on Ausrrian Economics and Lassiarefaire economics you would then have some understanding above that of and idiot who gets his "indoctrination" from the idiot box(tv).

oops, when you admonish someone for spelling Laissez-faire wrong you should then go ahead and spell it correctly.

Hroark: Please don't rag on Obama before you've even seen what he does. Please. Also, find a good bonfire and put your books on Austrian Economics on there. We've now seen what an unregulated market environment can do in the wrong circumstances. It turns out it ain't pretty.
nicholas9999 3 years ago
Nick go read at least one book on econ 101.
the market has been too regulated.socialism and a fiat monetry system has caused this,
We have never had true free market economics so you are completely wrong .
Printing more money will only expand the debt and devalue the USD.
you are completely uneducated and I bet you are addicted to tv .

hroark: You are convinced of the rightness of your views. Bye bye.

I think what killed the union was corruption, guys like Rush and shipping many of those jobs overseas
Since the democrats have sold out to corporations I don't see anything changing anytime soon, but please surprise me

Uh.. Have you ever seen "On the Waterfront'?
'Norma Rae" is a great movie but no where near the caliber.
zenguin13 3 years ago
"On The Waterfront" is a great film, but it had to do with a union gone corrupt.

Or make a special law or tax on outsourcing. Simple enough.

I saw this movie in high school. It moved me to research and get involved in the union movement.

Union's are a sham...they fact you are a union worker and your protected...means i have seen more union worker sham out of work...Now I do think the company sould take care of its own, as Loyalty sould play a factor...but as for Unions I say no...do your job and dont bitch, There are far worse jobs for worse pay.

It is so horrible when the workers get a
living wage, a safe working environment,
and some kind of help with their health.
What kind of idiot would want happy, healthy,
employees that raise productivity and make
more money for them! THAT'S CRAZY TALK!!

I'm not sure I like the message in this review. To me, it sounds like he's saying "we need unions inside every major corporation today". Dare I say, this is a bit too left-leaning?
scullion01 3 years ago
We need someone to stand up to corporate America - our jobs are being sent overseas in droves, the ones that remain are limited and getting harder all the time - more work with less people and less tools with which to do it. Unions took a wrong path someplace but so did the corporations.
thizizliz 3 years ago
Well said. And I agree with you that corporations need people to stand up to them. I also hate that jobs are lost to countries overseas. I can't believe people took my comment so negatively. No one is immune to constructive critism. I wasn't being mean/rude thats for sure.

this movie is truly inspiring. regardless of how one feels about unions, one should watch this movie.
this guy is SO right! but let's talk about resisting the powers that are really enslaving us....
redrajani 3 years ago 5
redrajani: which powers would those be?
HalcyonRain321 3 years ago
the short answer: international bankers & the wealthy elite of the world.
in other words, those who are in power, and have been in power, for decades.
check out dr. john coleman: the committee of 300...the man has researched the subject for something like 30 years.
