Don Angelica first taught the Sunburst (or Circle Expansion as my school called it) to the Bergenfield HS marching band before bringing it to the Troopers. The school still does the drill to this day!
i agree with a comment stated below that if the current TROOPERS was to use this show/production in this next years show with a few minor changes that would set them up even higher up the post. sometimes you need to go back to the classics to shake things up a little
If the Troopers changed to real authentic uniforms and did a show like the one here & executed it ..they'd be near the top again.. Right now, except for the color guard's flashy uniforms, you can't SEE the corp at night. They need MORE color in their uniform to get the "Vison: and GE" captions squared away.
@Stugazza I'm with YOU, Stugazza! I tried to lobby for them over the winter, but the Director didn't even respond to my e-mail.. Just didn't bother. I sent him pictures, clothing outfits that could get new, more colorful , but authentic uni's at a low price and everything.. and from Him? I even told him WHY I thought he should just CONSIDER a change.. (Vision & GE captions) but, Nothing. Oh well, at least I tried.
I was at this competition in 1971, and I think this production number by the Troopers remains one of the greatest moments drum corps history. It subtly and beautifully tells the story of "How the West was Won" complete with Indian attack, the circling of the wagons, the charge of the calvary (note how the color guard caption briefly gives the drum major her saber). The flags slowly rising up just before the burst still gives me chills..like the spirit of the old west rising again. Magnificent.
The Troopers changed the face of drum corps. They brought a musicality to the genre that has not been matched in its dramatic alteration of the appeal of drum corps. They paved the way for corps like the Vanguard and Bridgemen in their innovative approach to entertainment. They will always hold a treasured and vital place in the history of drum coprs in America. Thank you Troopers!
Coming from an actual TROOPER, why does it matter that some other corps won? The Casper Troopers were one of the founding corps OF DRUM CORPS. 27th isn't even a participating world class corps anymore. Your argument is invalid, sir.
This wasn't the Boston show. It was the World Open finals in Lynn MA. Back in the day, it was as big as marching in the DCI finals.Casper was World Open champion in 1969 and 1970, but didn't win in 1971.
Holy bejeezus! That was probably the most wicked sunburst I have ever seen. And NO yard lines. Jim Jones, thanks for what you have done! I hope to see the make finals again next year!
One of the 'rifles' performing in this video was my wife 'Wendy Lynch' Pando. A slide video of her life after 'Troopers' can be seen by typing 'Wendy Lynch Pando' into the search box

Enjoyed it! I was amused to hear "Garryowen" which is supposedly the tune that Custer played marching in to the Little Big Horn to get slaughtered!
