More importantly than that however to get those companies to take notice we have to be aggressive in our game play style. That means not sitting in a corner camping like a pussy or using no skill weapons like dual FMG9's. It means rushing your ass off.
Part of the reason is that females are seen as softer, for lack of a better term. It does not help that, (in my experience) most female gamers choose games like, well I do not even know what to call them without sounding disrespectful... "namby pamby", games? Anyway if more of us would p/u COD4, RvS or GRAW, the companies that develop and market these games might change their tactics.
this was awesome for you girls out there i know a couple of girl gamers and i didnt think about the stuff you brought to my attention now and i am with you on all of the sex symbols in the games lol nice job
I agree in most things you said here. But lets talk about female characters in games. I was thinking about this not so long ago. Many times I heard from my female friends that representations of female characters is usualy sexist and such. But seriously. Look at male characters. You know, not all of us have body of bodybuilder and face of photo model :) What Im trying to say is, that this works in both ways. Cheers.
Thank you so much for saying what I've always tried to explain. It makes me proud to see that someone has actually spoken for my demographic, and in a very intelligent and educated way.
i am a girl and ifi evej mention video games peopoe think i am crazy! soke people don't even watch my videos because i am a girl who plays video games
hey mass effect love interests go both ways now thanks for the revenge oh almost forgot sims thats all I'm saying people sometimes tell me that sims is for girls and yes I'm a guy and no I'm not gay from the mass effect thing and yes i usually play as girls in shooters that i like
PORTAL!! Great video! :) i'm a girl and I've been playing since I was little, but the only person that got me the games was my mom everyone else got me girl stuff while my brothers got "boy" stuff. Sadness.
Ah, bro but Harley is a dumb whore, she can't represent all women in games! A lot of those girls are my heroes. just look at Chell from Portal, that changed A LOT of guys perspectives of girl gamers finding out they we're playing a girl the whole time in there all time favorite game. XD
A great example of what your getting at though is Fiona from an old Capcom game Haunting Ground/Demento...she had big tits and no way to defend herself but hiding and a dog...but she was wicked smart, though.
The idea that video games form a large part of sexual marketing is not really true. If you want to find sexism in marketing look up any cleaning product or cooking product commercial. Look at movie marketing because I don't see a whole lot of it in the games I play, except that my action games usually have male protagonists. BF3 commercials show in game only, and nothing in their commercial seems to market solely to men unless you think action is for men only, which seems sexist in itself.
My girlfriend plays video games. No, she may not be into WoW, Starcraft, but she loves Diablo. She doesn't play FPS like Call of Doodoo or battlefield but she is a devote player of the Nancy Drew games. She loves Zoo Tycoon and has played Civilization. I love her dearly and though she doesn't play the games I do, I still consider her to be a gamer girl. I do find it frustrating how ignorant other people are, and being a guy who is 19 years old I hate the obsession of the female body in games.
Perfect Dark's main character is Joana Dark. Its a game (although not a great one) that has a distinct infiltration feel. I'm not saying that you are right or wrong just that I think this is society thing. Trust me when I say that if a market is there to make money from the video game marketers are tapping that resource.
i watched the whole video 'cause you're correct, quite a majority of people who play stuff like cod, yes are men, but plenty of them are still women, infact, i have 3 women in my steam friends list who are commonly active. however there is a wide array of 10-13 year old boys passing themselves off as 15 year old+ girls because of 1. their high pitch 2. every one is aggressive to children such as "grow a pair of balls", at the end of the day, its their own fault for screaming in the microphone.
Just an interesting fact for you, there are more female gamers than males ones. Kinda blows the whole sexist male orientated game market out the window. This is because of facebook, online bingo and poker gaming. What you are trying to describe is console gaming, which yes has slightly more male gamers, but on the whole, female gamers make up the vast majority of gamers.
@SerinSpiritwalker If you want to call yourself a "gamer", you should maybe look at the one or two games that exist outside of a video screen. Gamers love games. Yeah, strange concept, I know. I called myself a gamer before the Atari 2600.
It...makes me think...why...was the first...gamer i met...a girl? It...amazes me also...that Tamashii's hacks...saved me...from suicide...i just have...one thing...to say...THANK YOU TAMASHII!!!
Don't get me wrong, like this video VERY MUCH but you sound like you only game to prove a point, not because you want too.Plus,it seems like your over analyzing things. Its a business, not a charity.Companies make games that will sell. I don't complain that every man in a game look like their on steroids or oddly cruel. There MANY games where you can play as female(or male): Skyrim, Sims(*cough* , I LOVE THE SIMS),DOA, Street Fighter, etc. But,I like your video so I will subscribe.(fixed typos)
@MrDanielChaos I agree wholeheartedly with this. I don't really understand why most guys are so horrible online I guess it's mostly due to the fact that they are anonymous and think it means they can do what they want
@kai7124 From my experience, Xbox is full of horny teenagers and little kids. If what you're looking for is online play, ps3 definitely has a more mature online community.
Most guys would be surprised by how many female players they actually play against. Sure, more males play CoD then females, but not every single person in a match is always on voice chat, and many of the silent ones are girls. Hell, it isn't like a girl has to yell her head off on every game to let everyone know that there is someone of the opposite sex in the game. Perhaps if people didn't make it seem so strange, more girls would be more open about playing games.
@Kerenskyz15 I hear you. I'm a guy and encourage girls to talk on xbox live, I know people that wont because guys rage at them and say rude things like"send me pictures on your tits" etc. I PREFER playing with girl gamers cause guys are always raging, swear, and being very inappropriate.
Very good statements. The only thing I disagree with is the idea that games marketed specifically towards females means the industry is saying they are limited only to those games. Mrs Pacman doesn't mean you cannot play Pacman. If anything, the existence of games marketed to females means females get a larger game selection than males. A guy is not going to go get a cutesy game. But a female can, as well as an action-packed game. See? But I agree that genres should be more gender equivalent.
You do realize that a lot of girls do look into programming or game design but later change their minds to a different field. I personally don't care what field they pick and no one else that I know does either but there's the ideal notion that girls (not just guys) that they should pick a more feminine type of occupation like nursing.
Same thing for guys, people don't tell guys either but there isn't a lot of guys in nursing because it perceive to be feminine.
You are seriously siting the FF series as a series with female leads that are not stereotypes? The female lead is always something like Tifa or Aeris for two well known examples. There to be saved or a sex object. Just a horrid example! @Mtz Ya, it is the dev's fault because many companies still treat it like men treat cars. It's a male only thing 'n' even with females on the team design poor characters or ruin good ones like Samus with fusion 'n' metroid M. The industry is sexist.
This was interesting. However, it's not developers' faults that few women enter the game design field compared to men. If we had more females directing games and designing them (character design, creative directors, etc.) then we'd have more badass/interesting female characters and less shallow ones that are either "sex objects" or "damsels in distress."
I've actually been interested in seeing some anarchy and chaos from a female character's perspective, not colorfull or cheesy, corny shit.
I'm a guy and i agree with all you said. I'm just sad because there is no gamer girls on Portugal and the girls dont like gamers. I wish there were more girls like this.
i know girl gamers that dont even care about this stuff, just as long as their kicking ass and having fun, they dont mind if its a guy shooting the gun or the games designed are for boys, there just playing the games like everyone else, because they are part of the general public of gaming just like us guys :)
Really, whenever I happen to talk about video games with guys, I get looked at strangely and at times, I get shunned from the conversation. Also, can we get a game with some freaking hot hunks that doesn't look like an ass, I mean guys get caracters like Lara Croft, can we get also get a male version of this ?
@ThePeachylicousCandy Maybe it's just me, but I think someone like John Shepard would be considered a good looking man, and he's not a complete douche (well, he could be if you make him that way). In the end, though, this would come down to the woman's perspective. What would be your ideal "hot hunk" in gaming? That's not to say that Lara Croft is my image of an ideal female character (would prefer someone like Fang from FFXIII), just curious, really.
Also, Tamashii, I urge you to look beyond bad marketing to see the true essence of good games. Might I recommend Pikmin? It's a very little-known gem for the Gamecube. This, too, was a result of bad marketing.... Nintendo just isn't good at that. Please do not give up hope on girls and gaming, though, my sister is a female gamer, and we can have some pretty aggressive Pokemon battles! Not just that, she plays Super Smash Bros. Brawl, despite the fact that it is marketed toward men.
@TheShayminfreak2 I have Pikmin. Don't get me wrong, if I didn't already like the games that were marketed to men, I wouldn't have anything to take issue with. I DO like the games, their marketing is just offensive. Do I purchase a good game with an objectifying ad campaign? Doing so would tell the company their marketing is working. Because of this, it's difficult to "just look past" the marketing.
@TamashiiHiroka I know that the marketing campaign is offensive, but I think that if you try to find games you like that are marketing to all genders, you'll miss out on some great games. Even if it is offensive, why should you let that keep you from getting the games you want? My point isn't that the marketing is OK, but instead that you shouldn't take it to heart. Nintendo and other such companies are bad at marketing, we've known that for a long time.
@TamashiiHiroka I think it is. Unless you start a petition to change the marketing campaign, or a group, you alone not purchasing certain games will not change any numbers whatsoever in the slightest noticeable way to the companies. The only person at loss in this case would be you. Trying to send a message this way will not work.
well regarding the "men running around shooting other men" the majority of shooter characters are men due to the fact that well.. the majority of people in the real world going around shooting eachother are men (note that i said majority). Not only that but regarding the choice between casual and games like shooters... well how do you make a hardcore game for more feminine people? My girlfriend and i play games like modern warfare 3, gears of war 3 (which has many female characters to play as)
You should take a look at some of the RPG games for the PS1 and PS2, they seem to be more unisex than just focused on male gamers. Kingdom Hearts, Final Fantasy X and X-2 spring to mind. Even certain sports games appear to be unisex, the SSX games are great examples (especially SSX 3). Even in most newer racing games (2005-present) you can choose your gender.
Then again, it's all down to your personal preferences.
Also, 6:15 it's almost impossible to get all 130 on SADX let alone all 180 on SA2B
An informative video, however i feel it takes a one dimensional view on things, you really do place the causes down to the marketing and general tide of developed games being made for a male audience. As a developer myself, it's not considerate of the way in which many girls are brought up. I feel its not so much the case that girls are not gamers, but they are not frequent gamers in a market that is always evolving. It's a difficult debate, but i applaud your video.
I think many RPGs are heavily geared towards women. If the main character herself isn't a woman, then it is a cute boy that a lot of girls swoon over. The deep plot lines and beautiful graphics of the characters and settings differ from the combat-worn first person shooters. As for them being tedious...have you tried Kingdom Hearts? It's very simple and pretty different from other RPGs.
Good video! makes a lot of fair points! I have been gaming full time since the early 90's and all the time I was gaming the only people I saw around me were guys! everytime I brought up gaming with girls they usually seemed uninterested! gaming just seemed like everything tech related! the territory of guys who were at best awkward around girls! its not easy for a nerdy guy to catch a break! the whole scene had a very insular feel to it
She had a picture up of the PMS clan. Holly shit the PMS clan is nothing more than a bunch of fucking hypocrites. The leaders do nothing except use the clan's younger girls to recruit more girls. The clan then earns money from sponsorships and shit, which the leaders then use to fly themselves around to events.
I'm all for girl gamers, but DON'T support the PMS clan. I've even seen them attack other groups of girl gamers for doing things differently. Like being gamers and models for instance.
@TamashiiHiroka The image at 6:20. Pretty sure the blond in the middle is either Athena or her twin, and they are all wearing what looks like PMS clan t-shirts. They are big in the Xbox live arena I think (at least they were).
The leaders run it like a sort of cult. Brainwashing the other girls (and boys that hang out there) and attacking other groups of girls. When thegamergirls [dot] com started PMS clan attacked them as being whores for liking games AND modeling.
@dexluther No, that's not them. Those girls are called Frag Dolls, they're a group put together by Ubisoft. The blonde one in the middle is called Amy Brady, and her alias is Valkyrie.
@TamashiiHiroka Yep. That's it. A lot of the Frag Dolls are PMS clan members. Google Amy Brady. The first site that comes up is a Facebook page. Athena PMS aka Valkyrie FD.
@TamashiiHiroka FD is just another example of how they used the PMS clan and the fact that they are girls to capitalize. What have they given back to the girls of PMS clan that got them to where they are? Nothing.
They are invited to all sorts of events, but do they hold contests to have a lucky PMS girl join them? Nope. Events are for the leaders. Everyone else is there to spread the word and earn them money. If they others want to go, they have to pay for it themselves.
"I wish someone smarter could be the one to talk about this" -- Why? I thought you did quite well, actually.
No hate here. My wife's a gamer. My daughters are gamers. So's my son. So am I.
I'm curious what your take on the game review industry is. Magazines like Game Informer and web sites like Gamespot have a huge impact on the direction the marketing machine takes. Having more female reviewers, both as paid writers and as unpaid online contributors, would help address this imbalance.
@viewuphere As a female reviewer myself, I agree. Again, the more women gamers speak up, the harder it will be for the industry to ignore such a large and mostly untapped consumer base. The magazines I read when I was a little younger, like Electronic Gaming Monthly, almost always had a handful of female reviewers on the team too. I don't know if they still do, but it was nice to hear a female point of view.
mi abuela juega gears of war 3. antes todo iba dirigido hacia los hombres pero con el tiempo eso a cambiado, las empresas se estan dando cuenta que las mujeres son las verdaderas compradoras.
While you do make a good point about how disproportionately male-orineted the gaming industry is, you do skip a lot of good counter-examples when you dismiss the "overly complex and tedious RPGs". Nearly every Bioware game has allowed the player to be female and the romance dialogue in Mass Effect 2 and Dragon Age have clearly been made to appeal to both genders. Adventure games have also featured many strong female protagonists such as Jade (Beyond Good & Evil) and April Ryan (Longest Journey)
@TheCamulator I don't skip counter examples on purpose, keep in mind I can only reference games I've actually played, and I haven't played Mass Effect or Dragon Age. So if I missed a good female heroine, it's simply because I didn't know about her.
@TamashiiHiroka Oh no, I wasn't accusing you of skipping them on purpose. Just saying there are many examples that fall outside your experience due to your gaming preferences. I personally feel that RPGs tend towards being more gender-neutral more than other games, because they are (when done well) based on story-telling, character development and dialogue choices, not just shooting people in the face. Also, my female-Shepard backhands insolent males :)
I have lots of female gamer friends. That's mostly because they're being more open about it. I agree with you, a lot of the commercials are aimed at teenage males or kids. I don't see it changing until more 'girl gamers' come out and challenge developers and publishers.
Only then will they perhaps develop more unisex games. Even adding something at the beginning of a game asking if you want to play as a boy or girl would be a large step in the right direction. Only time will tell it seems...
Wow, I didn't even realize this. I didn't even notice that gaming commercial are more for men. Im a female gamer too. I play everything from skyrim, little big planet, and cod. Since i never notice the commercials, my anger is more towards the male gamer out there. Half are nice and the other half are in-mature. The about of hate female games get, is disgusting and maybe thats from the commercial stating that the gaming world is a mens world. Think again! Society need to change! Equal rights!
ive been gaming since computers first came to homes and schools, im a girl, well i guess now im a woman :D i love rpg's and have been waiting for diablo 3 for over a decade. id game all day and all night 7 days a week if i could. I liked your little thing here and i have heard them say your a girl like its something amazing, but ive been here from the beginning as well... if your complaining about gaming industry today i would have hated to see you with an apple 2gs and a choice of 4 games haha
Ms. Pac man also had a technological update involving ghost pathing. Which is the reason why it's usually held apart from Pac man, not because it has a weird pizza with legs on it.
but honestly i think lol! it's awesome when u walk into gamestop lol especially when ur a girl the guys are like O.O "um yeah do u happen to have tekken 6? or Armor core please." *crickets chirp* haha xD
I think it's crazy how most game industries continue to ignore the huge female audience that are dying for some good action-paced serious games. Games like Portal and Skyrim have proven they don't need to cater to retarded burly guy and sexy girl cliches in order to become massively popular. Games should focus on being unisex and making aspects like gameplay and enjoyment of the game great and not just throw some naked lass in there in the hope they'll make their money off of guys with boners.
@Yinello87 "Games should focus on being unisex" NONONO games should focus on good game play(put in this 2 words whatever U wan)
and also ... girls need more female producers/codemasters/developers ... tell ppl who are good in making shooters to make some shiny flashing arcade game they will tell u go to hell ;-)
i think the thing is that girl gamers isn't bad, its just that most girl gamers are the strange obssesed ones that do nothing but play, same with guys like that; it's irritating.
I'm a guy, most people in my guild in WoW are girls of all different ages, but I wish there were more girl gamers :D but many girls on xbox, ps3, etc. are afraid to talk because they believe they'll be made fun of. its just wrong :D
Instead of complaining, get out on that market to fill the oppertunity it offers if you know so well what it is exactly that girls want to play. I am a guy, I have a gamer girlfriend who plays pretty much anything except RTS. She complains, just like you about the lack of unigender targeted games. But like you, she isn't able to solidify what it is exaclty that would make for a good unigender game except puzzle genres like portal. So instead of complaining, get out there and MAKE the game.
I play Halo (All of them except for Halo wars, it's shit), Assassin's Creed, Bioshock, L4D, Dead Space 2, Sr3 and one of my favorite old games, mario kart on the N64 :)
I agree with you on many levels but to me it seems that guys just show more of an affectionate passion towards games. I noe girl gamers like u and they are actually shy of saying it for reasons i dnt noe but i do respect you on you confidence and passion i sure as hell am to camera shy to do anything
uhhh lara croft is awesome, there's no reason for them to make less of her XD i do wish that games had more girl character options, that's probably my only complaint.
ya know, your right about the whole thing about gamer girls/ nerds wanting a date. I am one of them. I do play call of duty to empress guys, but im a super nerd who LOVES RPGS and fighting games. :P
@Colonialman456 I've always been very partial to RPGs and Platformers. A girl playing COD won't get any more attention from me than a subatomic particle on Jupiter.
Colonialman456 I also do play fighting games. I adore mortal cobat and marvel vs capcom aswell as DBZ fighting games. Pokemon is another fun game though I prefer the older ones as opposed to the newer ones. I aswell like the game Golden Sun. Golden Sun, released in Japan as Ōgon no Taiyō Hirakareshi Fūin aka Golden Sun: The Broken Seal is the first installment in a series of fantasy role-playing video games developed by Camelot Software Planning and published by Nintendo.
@Colonialman456 I don't try to impress ANYONE but myself, and I HATE COD with a PASSION! I love fighting games, adventure games, some racing games etc. (: ..So please don't assume every girl plays COD, just to impress a bunch of dudes, whom they don't even know.
.... im a girl gamer... and i dont get put off any games... unless i think there shit... i love COD, assassins creed, but i do like the ... under 7 games as well like kingdom hearts <3.... cant blame that on my female attitude towards games... ITS DISNEY!!!
I'm just going to put it out there. The macho, steriod munching, hero characters in most games these days are not what what young males (or older ones) aspire to be. This is what society tell us we should be. Otherwise we are nothing. Negative stereotyping is happening on both sides of the fence.
This video is quite true :D All of my guy friends are shocked when they find out I game. I've an xBox360, a PS2, a Wii, and MMORPG's on my computer. My games are more action games, based widely on war, yes, but that's what appeals to me. Some of my guy friends get even closer to me, as we find something we can learn about each other - gaming methods! It's the fools that don't like girl gamers is why I don't use my mic often, unless I'm in a group with a friend.
keep thinking about the movie industry as I watch, granted movies have the gender problem less but the solution, from my perspective is similar, just make it good to everyone, women aren't all stereotypical homemakers, nor manhaters as such they should be handled the same way as a man would be handled as a human.Though I'm a guy I prefer the "kiddy" games over games like shooters, less repetitive (few are fun) + I have more fun with women in games since they get less competitive in my experience
(cont.) you got a lot of scummy kids who dont know how to talk to girls out there,so they say shit like "Boobs or GTFO" or "go make me a sammich" (can these dickheads even spell? sammich? ~_~ ) Anyway thats another thing that pisses me off about gaming(online) .Though u mite not be into online gaming, there are many women out there that are and they know what im talkin about. My msg for you girls,it will get better,as for you "kids" out there, fkn grow up.
You know alot about my era of video games,im impressed,Ive noticed in the last few years that girls are gettin to that stage where they are playing as much as we do.For instance, about 2 years back i was playing an mmorpg game and i helped out some ppl with quests or leveling, it was an average of 3 out of 5 of the people i helped, were girls.More and more females play games as much as i used to.Id say its reached 30% of females who play games these days.I feel bad for you girls though (cont.)
When I first began playing, about every guy that I had met either asked me out or flirted. There were a few though who discriminate against me, one time some dude said"shouldn't you be in the kitchen?" It's very diverse
Moving forward a little though in my gaming history was a game called The Longest Journey for the PC which had the main protagonist as a female. I have always played Masculine style games but also games such as Rainbow Islands which was a very "cute" child like game and some others thereafter but I am rather Masculine by nature. BUT that didn't stop me from being totally engrossed playing as April Ryan in The Longest Journey and loving it all the way through with it's emotive story :)
Well... hmmmm I started gaming in about 1979 until about 2005 and stopped :( I went through all the old LCD games, a Hanimex Pong console, CBS Colecovision, Atari 2600, Commodore 64, Amiga & PC. But if there was one genre of games that I thought catered for all it was the "Adventure" game genre, one for which we see rarely anything of anymore :(
Honestly, they made legend of Zelda the best game ever since Zelda can transform into sheik so she doesn't have to be only saved...

The idea that video games form a large part of sexual marketing is not really true. If you want to find sexism in marketing look up any cleaning product or cooking product commercial. Look at movie marketing because I don't see a whole lot of it in the games I play, except that my action games usually have male protagonists. BF3 commercials show in game only, and nothing in their commercial seems to market solely to men unless you think action is for men only, which seems sexist in itself.

i watched the whole video 'cause you're correct, quite a majority of people who play stuff like cod, yes are men, but plenty of them are still women, infact, i have 3 women in my steam friends list who are commonly active. however there is a wide array of 10-13 year old boys passing themselves off as 15 year old+ girls because of 1. their high pitch 2. every one is aggressive to children such as "grow a pair of balls", at the end of the day, its their own fault for screaming in the microphone.

I PREFER playing with girl gamers cause guys are always raging, swear, and being very inappropriate.

tbh, though, a lot of girls /don't/ identify as "girl gamers". I just think of myself as a gamer. Full stop.
And also, to be entirely fair, the industry is kind of trying. Look at Gears of War 3! I was so happy to be able to (finally) play as a female.
Don't get me wrong, Marcus Fenix is epic, but he gets a bit old after a while. xD

Napcom 5 days ago
You do realize that a lot of girls do look into programming or game design but later change their minds to a different field. I personally don't care what field they pick and no one else that I know does either but there's the ideal notion that girls (not just guys) that they should pick a more feminine type of occupation like nursing.
Same thing for guys, people don't tell guys either but there isn't a lot of guys in nursing because it perceive to be feminine.

Missioneer 6 days ago
You are seriously siting the FF series as a series with female leads that are not stereotypes? The female lead is always something like Tifa or Aeris for two well known examples. There to be saved or a sex object. Just a horrid example! @Mtz Ya, it is the dev's fault because many companies still treat it like men treat cars. It's a male only thing 'n' even with females on the team design poor characters or ruin good ones like Samus with fusion 'n' metroid M. The industry is sexist.
KorleeM 6 days ago
This was interesting. However, it's not developers' faults that few women enter the game design field compared to men. If we had more females directing games and designing them (character design, creative directors, etc.) then we'd have more badass/interesting female characters and less shallow ones that are either "sex objects" or "damsels in distress."
I've actually been interested in seeing some anarchy and chaos from a female character's perspective, not colorfull or cheesy, corny shit.

TheShayminfreak2 1 week ago
@TheShayminfreak2 I have Pikmin. Don't get me wrong, if I didn't already like the games that were marketed to men, I wouldn't have anything to take issue with. I DO like the games, their marketing is just offensive. Do I purchase a good game with an objectifying ad campaign? Doing so would tell the company their marketing is working. Because of this, it's difficult to "just look past" the marketing.
TamashiiHiroka 1 week ago
@TamashiiHiroka I know that the marketing campaign is offensive, but I think that if you try to find games you like that are marketing to all genders, you'll miss out on some great games. Even if it is offensive, why should you let that keep you from getting the games you want? My point isn't that the marketing is OK, but instead that you shouldn't take it to heart. Nintendo and other such companies are bad at marketing, we've known that for a long time.
TheShayminfreak2 1 week ago
@TamashiiHiroka I think it is. Unless you start a petition to change the marketing campaign, or a group, you alone not purchasing certain games will not change any numbers whatsoever in the slightest noticeable way to the companies. The only person at loss in this case would be you. Trying to send a message this way will not work.

My girlfriend and i play games like modern warfare 3, gears of war 3 (which has many female characters to play as)
XFrailLimbNurseryX 1 week ago
You should take a look at some of the RPG games for the PS1 and PS2, they seem to be more unisex than just focused on male gamers. Kingdom Hearts, Final Fantasy X and X-2 spring to mind. Even certain sports games appear to be unisex, the SSX games are great examples (especially SSX 3). Even in most newer racing games (2005-present) you can choose your gender.
Then again, it's all down to your personal preferences.
Also, 6:15 it's almost impossible to get all 130 on SADX let alone all 180 on SA2B
blainyrules 1 week ago
An informative video, however i feel it takes a one dimensional view on things, you really do place the causes down to the marketing and general tide of developed games being made for a male audience. As a developer myself, it's not considerate of the way in which many girls are brought up. I feel its not so much the case that girls are not gamers, but they are not frequent gamers in a market that is always evolving. It's a difficult debate, but i applaud your video.
danielR369 1 week ago
I think many RPGs are heavily geared towards women. If the main character herself isn't a woman, then it is a cute boy that a lot of girls swoon over. The deep plot lines and beautiful graphics of the characters and settings differ from the combat-worn first person shooters. As for them being tedious...have you tried Kingdom Hearts? It's very simple and pretty different from other RPGs.

Like being gamers and models for instance.
dexluther 1 week ago
@dexluther PMS clan? I haven't heard of them, which image is them?
TamashiiHiroka 1 week ago
@TamashiiHiroka The image at 6:20. Pretty sure the blond in the middle is either Athena or her twin, and they are all wearing what looks like PMS clan t-shirts. They are big in the Xbox live arena I think (at least they were).
The leaders run it like a sort of cult. Brainwashing the other girls (and boys that hang out there) and attacking other groups of girls. When thegamergirls [dot] com started PMS clan attacked them as being whores for liking games AND modeling.
dexluther 1 week ago
@dexluther No, that's not them. Those girls are called Frag Dolls, they're a group put together by Ubisoft. The blonde one in the middle is called Amy Brady, and her alias is Valkyrie.
TamashiiHiroka 1 week ago
@TamashiiHiroka Yep. That's it. A lot of the Frag Dolls are PMS clan members. Google Amy Brady. The first site that comes up is a Facebook page. Athena PMS aka Valkyrie FD.
dexluther 1 week ago
@TamashiiHiroka FD is just another example of how they used the PMS clan and the fact that they are girls to capitalize. What have they given back to the girls of PMS clan that got them to where they are? Nothing.
They are invited to all sorts of events, but do they hold contests to have a lucky PMS girl join them? Nope. Events are for the leaders. Everyone else is there to spread the word and earn them money. If they others want to go, they have to pay for it themselves.

I'm curious what your take on the game review industry is. Magazines like Game Informer and web sites like Gamespot have a huge impact on the direction the marketing machine takes. Having more female reviewers, both as paid writers and as unpaid online contributors, would help address this imbalance.
viewuphere 1 week ago
@viewuphere As a female reviewer myself, I agree. Again, the more women gamers speak up, the harder it will be for the industry to ignore such a large and mostly untapped consumer base. The magazines I read when I was a little younger, like Electronic Gaming Monthly, almost always had a handful of female reviewers on the team too. I don't know if they still do, but it was nice to hear a female point of view.

TheCamulator 1 week ago
@TheCamulator I don't skip counter examples on purpose, keep in mind I can only reference games I've actually played, and I haven't played Mass Effect or Dragon Age. So if I missed a good female heroine, it's simply because I didn't know about her.
TamashiiHiroka 1 week ago

Games like Portal and Skyrim have proven they don't need to cater to retarded burly guy and sexy girl cliches in order to become massively popular. Games should focus on being unisex and making aspects like gameplay and enjoyment of the game great and not just throw some naked lass in there in the hope they'll make their money off of guys with boners.

keep thinking about the movie industry as I watch, granted movies have the gender problem less but the solution, from my perspective is similar, just make it good to everyone, women aren't all stereotypical homemakers, nor manhaters as such they should be handled the same way as a man would be handled as a human.Though I'm a guy I prefer the "kiddy" games over games like shooters, less repetitive (few are fun) + I have more fun with women in games since they get less competitive in my experience

When I first began playing, about every guy that I had met either asked me out or flirted. There were a few though who discriminate against me, one time some dude said"shouldn't you be in the kitchen?" It's very diverse

nice video, I know plenty of girl gamers and its realy cool to talk to them about things the other girls in our society won't talk about.
