Well its unfortunate that whenever someone posts a youtube video, it soon degenerates into people calling each other names, etc. Russel, I had a ball at your show in Buffalo and I think that the Allbright Knox is a unique venue for live jazz!
I dunno why the link to me playing with George Benson was flagged as spam and removed, but in case anyone wonders what some of that convo was about (as it seems to make no sense the way it is now), that's what's missing.
Russell Malone is THE BADDEST MOTHERFUCKER I've ever heard play the guitar live. Period. Everyone can have their own personal taste and say what they like or don't like, but to say he "isn't much of a jazz player" is factually incorrect and makes whoever says it sound like a drooling retard.
@RichGirI Go to myspace dot com slash danperez and check the photos on my myspace for a picture of me playing with George Benson. ;) I stand by my comment.
I saw Russell at this year's Monterey Jazz Festival with Kenny Barron, Regina Carter, and Kurt Elling. He was unreal. Especially his rendition of Wes Montgomery's "Road Song". Amazing player. He truly inspires me to play better
Russell is soooo versatile, and is one of the very few players that reminds me of Wes or early George Benson. He's got it all, and is regarded as one of the best. Live at Jazz Standard is great. I also love his work on Diana Krall's "When I Look in Your Eyes". The guitar work is perfect - tasty and very melodic, like all of his playing. And a sweet round tone to die for. Russell - after you learn from mudywaters1, I'd love to get a lesson from you.
hey russell ...most of these knuckle heads don't really know anything about jazz or blues or the lineage of great black music and how it relates to todays music...so...someone like muddywaters1 says what they say and it really sounds stupid and jive...yes ...a lesson is in order(for someone..not you)
You sounded great with Ron Carter and Mulgrew at the Caverns. I dig your authentic T.Bone Walker feel her with a mix of modernisms. Elmore James was a bad cat too. Continue preserving the legacy with your originality mixed in.
Hey mudywaters1, you sure have a lot to say. When and where can we hear you play? By the way, I hope that the ghost of Wes Montgomery comes and shove his thumb up your ass.
What a silly commentary mudywaters... I saw Russell last night (with Pat Martino and Mark Whitfield) and he' s an amazing jazz player with advanced chops, a fiery technique, harmonic knowledge and insane chord playing.
I really don't know what to think about Russell? He always plays the same thing a cross between blues and 1940's blues. He isn't much of a jazz player. More of a bull%$#@ player.
I've heard him go way outside the box that you describe. Just because he always returns to the gut-bucket doesn't make it "bullshit." It's just his style. You should go see him live or listen to more of his solo stuff. His work with Diana Krall is tasty, but isn't really a good way to tell what he's all about as a musician.
fucking LOL. Are you stupid? Just watch some of his other videos here, namely the ones with the billy taylor trio and then come back and say hes a "bull%@#$ player."
The man can play when he plays with some structure but he is in the mind set of an old man and refused to play anything else but gut bucket. I heard his version of "There will never be another you", but he always goes back to the BS. . His jazz playing is fantastic but he doesn't take suggestions from anybody he rather do the gut bucket. He had to play jazz with Pat and Mark or he would look silly By the way he is a poor blues player.
mudywaters1, get your ears out of your behind, or stop being a troll. You can't possibly mean this shit.
Russel is a true master, and everyone with the slightest idea of jazz music recognizes that. Its just unquestionable. Period. And the gentleman has pure poetry in every note he picks. His techniqe is brilliant, yet often playing more with grace and coolness than shredding it off. Simple, beautful and to the point is the most diffcult of all, in fact.

Get your axe out, record some videos of yourself playing and we will all praise your wonderful blues playing!!!!!
Russell is a mighty fine player. Maybe it is just the fact that the blues doesn't offer as many harmonic possibilities as most jazz tunes.
