  • Look at Youtube................kyokushin kata Bassai Dai 大 極真カタ

  • I once had the honour of training under the instruction of Osaka Sensei. A most impressive teacher.

  • Why is Data from Star Trek narrating?

  • your kata is so good.

  • Just so you know, this is from the JKA's instructional series on how JKA kata are to be done, and all the performers chosen were chosen because of their excellence. In other words, this is where the bar is set; this is the standard of excellence. The performer here is Osaka Sensei, who won JKA national and world championships in kata. If anyone thinks this is poorly done, they haven't one scintilla of a clue.

  • I'm learning this at karate, and I'm 12, and a girl, and I'm better at this that a guy about four years older than me, and one belt higher, And whoever thinks this kata is crappy, then think again. If you say that then you obviously don't know anything about karate.

  • @AkitaDane Lmao xD How well you can do a Kata doesn't depend on your age or colour belt. Just saying..

  • Great Coach ..

  • Very nicely done , or at least better than anyone here , so shut up!

  • Sbsolutely brilliant. Really strong, sharp hip and torso movement. In fact it was all extraordinary really. We could learn a lot from this.

  • The good old days when karate had form, power, and spirit.

  • wow!!!!!

  • i in joyed that kata very much, i in joy when i see a man who knows what he is doing, i did the same kata, the same way, great kata master john lengyel

  • este video esta super ya q el cencei q lo ase lo ase con un baisco bueno

  • Osu,Osaka Shihan is a great master. He was here recently in New Zealand.Great teacher as well

  • This is one my favorites as well. Its very powerful.

  • I am doing this for my 4th Dan now it's really simple

  • karate forever the best forever karate do tournament the best of the best colombia

  • lo mejor de karate do, karate forever

  • I have to learn this form for my black belt. I'm getting excited now! ALL RIGHT!

  • @SamuraiJapan100 nah its shotokan!

  • @Mistabutts Well, there are many forms of this kata. I myself am a Goju practitioner and I have a version of this, just like Shotokan and Kyokushin do. History tells us that all three of our styles come from the same roots.

    OSU!

  • @DamageU Cool! Thanks for the info :)

    OSU!

  • @DamageU

Exactly. Many, many styles use the same forms. Moo Duk Kwan uses this one.

  • @Mybucketgone I believe I had some of that for lunch today.

  • This form was tremendous. His kime was solid and his movements crisp. This reminds me of what I used to so love about Shotokan. Thank you for the wonderful post.

  • There are alot of critics, not just of Kata's, or Shotokan Karate, but martial arts in general. The main argument from the critics of martial arts, is that they believe it to be inaffective or impractical for "real" self defense situations. It is important to remember that these critics are very rarely great fighters themselves (most of them probably aint even healthy enough to learn martial arts). If one ever wants to see how effective Shotokan is, just take a look at Machida in the UFC.

  • @pvt3 great point. A lot of great fighters started off with shotokan as a base. Georges st pierre began learing shotokan from an early age too im pretty sure :)

  • @SamuraiJapan100 no its shotokan

  • Some things are other then i learned ... f.E. at 0:53-0:59 .... I learned to make a kick, that looks like a circle and not like (he did) a Gyaku-Mawashi-Geri ... I have to make a decision ... do i do it like he does ... or do i do it like my sensei does .... hmmm

  • @xBleach4Eva I'm pretty sure they changed it to what you've been taught a while ago, although I usually make a Mikazuki Geri at that point, so Idk.

  • @xBleach4Eva I would suggest doing as your Sensei teaches you to do. You'll test under your

Sensei or the organization to which he belongs. There are variations among major shotokan groups - the JKA, the ITKF/AAKF, ISKF, etc. Osaka does a magnificent Bassai dai here, but if you watched Yahara or Kagawa or Kanazawa do the same kata, you'd probably see some differences (each of them now belong to different organizations, though all were JKA).

  • Very nice. Thank you so much for posting this.

  • Osaka the best!

  • I quite enjoyed it. Granted there are a few little things we do differently in our interpretation of this Kata.

However, all the basics were, as far as I'm concerned, perfect.

Basics like distance, timing, good lines, balance, strong techniques and stances.

Regardless of what style of martial art you do, these basics are universal.

An excellent demonstration. Glad to have watched it.

  • ^^ i do karate its awsome im purpal belt planning to go all the way

  • best of the best trad. bow.

  • Certainly a very good kata demonstration for the Shotokan style, I like this much better than the Kanazawa version included here. Osaka even though very tense (which is very Shotokan) moves fast and does not stiffen up so much. One thing is to "look" strong and ferocious (which seems to be the idea here), another to make strong and effective techniques.

  • I could only hope to perform this kata that well.

  • if u tried t hit him you would get ur arm broken by his wrists ayy

  • NO sound in kiyai,

Its a counter and there isnt Power !

pls but this is only suggetion !

  • Lol, he has perfect speed and form!

  • that comment is to ZMeagan14.

  • I want to know..

I would like the answer to this question: What is shotokan karate based around? Is it strength, speed, stamina, skill, agility...

I've been practising for over 2 years and i still don't know the answer..

I only possess agility and slight speed, so i want to know how suited i am for karate..

  • Well I am going to do take my brown bely tomoz and wadoryu hes the best

  • Dude

you didn't answer mai question ¬¬

  • Shotokan karate is all about strengh, speed, agility.

Each kata has its own porpouse. There are katas that's about strengh (pratice by the people from the country), about speed ( the city people) and about agility (mariners people).

Find the kata that suits you.

  • Hmm...

    Okay, thanks.

  • Rakesh-- It is too good I have also done this kata many time and after watching this video i can improve my stance as well as kata

  • This is a nice Vid

  • Comment removed

  • thanks helps mucho

  • Just brilliant. I will be looking at this when I practice at home.

  • this kata was fast he will lose if he go to competetion!!

  • @tadzman100 - Ha, ha. You're funny. Osaka was world kata champ 4 times, all-Japan kata champ 6 sttraight years, 2nd place 3 years, and also found time to win all-Japan kumite once and finish 3rd 3 times. This is the official JKA kata training video distributed back in the 80's .

  • whoa it really is Osaka sensei ;o

  • Awesome, I'll be learning bassi dai for brown 3, so this will be very helpful & I will be practising very hard. Thanks 5*

  • This form is such a beautiful form to do.. Me and the other brown belts are just now learning how to do this form.. It may be long but its such a powerful and beautiful form to do

  • whoever said this kata was hard... its not its such a short strong kata.

  • OSS

  • its "osu" ;p

  • this is a hard kata.

  • To learn or by trait?

  • é uns dos katas mais Bonito q eu ja Vi.. xD

  • Não vejo a hora de aprender esse kata !!!

  • I usually think the world of Osaka's kata, and he's thoroughly amazing at teaching this kata to others, but I was a little disappointed by this :-\ He's doing some things that he told US off for last time I trained with him. I'm sure this is nowhere near his best performance of this kata.

I'm still glad I can learn a lot from this video, it's not perfect, but it's textbook and still pretty damn good! I don't think I'll find any better, but IMHO it's not as sharp as say... his tekki shodan.

  • much different looking then shito ryu eh?

  • whoooooo I remember this one !

  • quevideo mas bueno

  • what r the karate schools and y there r different schools of it ?

  • fafasasa, in the old times when karate was practiced in Okinawa only, there were two basic styles : Shuri-Te and Naha-Te. Later, when Karate started spreading around the world, different Masters developed their fighting skills in different directions, and thus different styles came to be. This clip is a kata of Shotokan style, one of the most popular. It developed from early 1900's to about late 1960's, and it has a very serious approach that conciders both the tradition and modern science.

  • Some other styles include Goju Ryu, Wado Ryu, Shito Ryu (all concidered old styles) and some recently developed styles, like Kyokushinkai, Shotokai and Fudokan, to mention a few. Kyokushinkai is a style for itself, founded by Masutatsu Oyama, while Shotokai and Fudokan are offsprings of Shotokan, Fudokan being essentially unchanged Shotokan but with accent given to traditional "hard" karate, as opposed to sport. If you're concidering taking up Karate, Shotokan or Fudokan are your best bets.

  • thanks alot for the video it really made my bassais better :)

  • lol, and I thought my friends made a good bassai dai!

  • woah. ive never seen this version before. very nice

  • Hmmm...Osaka Sensei was World and National Champion on more than one occasion, having been judged by the most discerning eyes in the Shotokan world. My guess is, he knows what he's doing, and his critics here don't have a clue. This video, by the way, is from the JKA's official video syllabus, produced by Nakayama Sensei, the JKA's longtime chief instructor. It is therefore the STANDARD for JKA style shotokan. That's good enough for me.

  • REALY So many critics out there. I say put up or shut up...for those who think this kata is "CRAPY" post a vid of yourself doing it perfectly. Personaly I couldnt fault it. Any martial artist worth his salt wouldnt critacise another style wether it be right or wrong, With so many different styles out there wether traditional or non traditional it is way beyond stamping out. We should all learn to live and let live, and do the style that best suits us. Is that not in the true spirit of the art?

  • right on 10101964pb

To me the ones who criticize the most almost NEVER have anything posted of themselves showing how perfect they are.

  • @10101964pb Whoa.. you REALLY need a spell checker. I can't even read what you're trying to say, your spelling is just. So. Distracting.

  • @randomvidsish Whoa..you may have a reading problem then. 10 thumbs up apear to have understood what i am saying. I agree my spelling is poor, it is a shame someone who seems so perfect at spelling cant seem to get and understand one of the most basic things that even as a child our parents should have taught us. ACCEPTANCE and live and let live, See if you can figure it out on your own.

  • @10101964pb

Over sensitive much? I'm not challenging what you're friggin saying, I'm just making a point that you really need a spell checker. Jesus.

Funny how in this new comment you have perfect spelling (not grammar, just spelling) as apposed to the last one, which was a hot mess.

If you're so perfectly accepting of everything, why do you bother getting so defensive about a comment directed towards your spelling? Hypocritical much?

See if you can figure THAT out on your own.

  • @MsNegativityNinja LOL I am far from perfect, Over sensitive, No just nit pickers like you annoy me. I still dont have nor do i use spell checker, I try to rely on what i was taught at school even though that was 27 years ago. I am glad i made you happy with my spelling, and just as happy that my Grammar peeves you off. But what really spins me out is what all that has to do with my comments. Are you one of these people with no life that annoy strangers for the hell of it? GET A LIFE MAN.

  • @10101964pb

    I REALLY agree with you.

How many ...good... Martial Artists in Western countries and Europe have understood the true philosophy of Martial Arts and really show it? How many will stand?...

  • Love this version of Bassai Dai. Probably the best I've seen, it also helped me in getting my Shodan recently. Oss, Osaka Sensei.

  • Much better form overall than I could do, but he's very stiff and tense in the shoulders while throwing techniques. 9/10

  • For those with eyes that want to see, an excellent, thoroughly dynamic demonstration of Bassai Dai in traditional Shotokan style.

All techniques are crisp and decisive. Stances are strong and stable throughout and Osaka Sensei's balance is perfect.

Of course, one wouldn't expect anything less from such a renowned instructor.

Thorough study of this video will reap rewards.

    Thanks for posting it!

PS: Remember that karate starts and ends with respect: that includes text comments!

  • @Tapiola2007

I agree.Wonderful to watch.Explosive movements combined with balance and poise. What an age we live in where we can see such things. Not possible untill very recently.

Have we lost our sense of wonder??

  • Osaka rules! Perfect Shotokan form.

  • after my 26 years in martial arts I have learned and witnessed quite a bit. Reading some of the comments further solidifies my thoughts. Remember, the days of combat are long over and the emphasis needs to shift to training in the arts to overcome yourself and your own weakness and becoming a better person, not better than someone else but better than yourself.

  • Excellent comment!

At the heart of Shotokan karate is the goal of self-improvement (both physical and mental).

By training hard and with dedication and respect for ourselves and others, we improve our technique and, more importantly, we grow as human beings.

Being the 'best' means being honest and true to yourself through your training. Competition titles and Dan grades are impressive and in their proper place worthy of respect but they will never outweigh self-respect through training.

  • shame on anyone here who uses swear words to describe their purpose, specially those who practies martial arts!!!

  • Nice kata and nice technique. Reading the comments reminds me of what I dislike about the traditional arts. All the truly great martial artists I've trained with over the past 25 years(and I'm not one of them) had a respect for other styles and techniques, even when they disagreed. If rewarding acheivement with a belt encourages a student to work harder, then great. I changed to a non belt system club years ago because I liked the club better. Find a club you like then work hard every class!

  • It seems like you haven't found a truly traditional martial arts system if you feel that students view their belts as rewards and that both student and teacher are not expected to respect other arts. I train in traditional Karate and in a non-traditional Jeet Kune Do for several years. I find that they both have pros and cons, just like anything else. May I recommend Living The Martial Way by Forrest E. Morgan? It is an essential text in Genkotsu Kai Karate, the traditional art I study.

  • Technically superb! One of the very best performances of the Shotokan version of Bassai Dai on youtube.

  • o kata mais foda!!

  • I am not aware that the JKA has adopted a disney based belt color system. The many shades of belts are typically in the west and are to stroke the frail egos of those that need constant validation. When I trained in Japan colors were white, brown, black. I award white, brown and black. If you can not work/train without the need for constant stroking you do not need to be in a traditional karate school, go to some American karate play farm, learn junk and become a hachidan in three months.

  • What you described is one of the reasons I gave up taekwondo. I found it offensive that while I was training three hours a day, many of my fellow students, who couldn't tell right from left, were being promoted and becoming assistant instructors. Speaking in defense of my countrymen however, there are still those of us who believe in "A days work for a day's pay." I just found a Shotokan dojo not far from my home that awards as you do. I intend to train there asap.

  • Make sure your new dojo has a traditional focus. That means they have a direct and proveable link to the JKA. Do your homework before you waste your time and money. Do not listen to BS, there is plenty out there and, unfortunately, a lot of it is called Shotokan. America is filled with fake schools and now we have a fake president.

  • you're right about how people need to learn without having constant validation, but its a stretch to say colored belts are necesesairily bad. my shotokan system does colored belts, and as hasanabrkica points out color is part of shotokan. my system, however, gives a new belt color/removes a stripe every six months, providing you pass the test. my system held me from brown until i was ready. honestly, people need dojos without promotion amnesty. color is not the problem, bad senseis are.

  • I trained in the JKA in 1964, they did not have the Disney belt system. I go in their current web site and see no Disney system. The Shotokan system is in Japan and the west copies it and adds western culture and we have punching and kicking sports, extreme martial arts (what is that?), American Shotokan (what is that? and lots of copy cat, inauthentic junk. We do not build martial artists, we build sports oriented students with big egos and too many big mouths. Sad, Funakoshi would be sorry.

  • You're a pompus moron. The Color belt system was invented by Jigoro Kano, and JAPANESE man, for JAPANESE schools. It has nothing to do with the west. What you describe is down to shitty instruction and illogical sylubus. If you don't like belts, don't use them at all, but please don't decry all schools that use belt systems as junk. Unless you have a video of yourself beating a Judo Blue belt, or a Brazillian Jujutsu Purple?

  • And you are 22 years old, 6 years past the age of which the medical community says you have no idea of the consequences of your actions. That is another way of saying you are too young to know anything from experience. I was a yudansha in Japan learning of karate and the belt system in 1964 before you were even a sparkle in someones eye. If it is all the same to you, I will rest on those things I know rather than the ignorant remarks of an immature smart assed child. Video? Beyond egocentricity.

  • So you deny that Belt systems are a Japanese invention, or was that babble meant to be some kind of rebutal?

I don't care how old you are, you are wrong. It takes a bigger man to accept that. Your old enough to know better, old man ;)

  • I see you have poor reading skills and I will not banter with an impudent child. To the public that may care: The Japanese have a grading system that the west borrowed and corrupted in numerous ways. The child giving me ignorant rebutal is obviously a product of that corruption. The Japanese typically do not allow belts, that actually represent accomplishment rather than rank, in colors other than white, brown or black. Black belt is not a rank, it is a color of obi. Shodan or Nidan is a rank.

  • Additionally, the term rank is a poor interpretation of their view of the training and accomplishment scenario. They developed an accomplishment hiearchy long ago. Grading allowed one to know of their relative accomplishment. The west, and especially the ignorant west, refer to it as rank because that is how we see it. It is not rank at all and the actual interpretation of Shodan, 1st level of black belt in the west, is First Grade or first level yudansha. A yudansha is simply a serious student.

  • Your arrogance just makes you look like a dick. And your babble prooves me right. The "Disney belt system" was invent by a Japanese man. The JKA recognises the "Disney Belt System". You're a pompus moron.

  • Funakoshi didn't like sparring. Who care what he thinks. hes dead. Shotokan dosn't beling to him anymore.

  • always loved this one

  • No accturlally this helpped a million (: Very well done. Thank soo soo soo so so much :)

  • Thanks ;) just the one im learning, kinda helped me

  • Thanks. Thats a great vid. I'm startng back after a 2 year gap and couldnt remember the kata. But now i know it so thanks. Didn't want to look like an idiot not even knowing my own level kata!!

  • Really? What other stance? Perhaps in styles other than Shotokan?

  • Sensei Osaka follows exactly the JKA standarts, as can be seen in sensei Nakayama´s "best karate" series. The stance, indeed, is zenkustu dachi. You should look with organization standarts you are following. For example, sensei Kanazawa´s SKIF changed some stances in some katas like gojushiho sho.

  • I think this video is a very good example to follow and study, compared to others I have seen on youtube, anyone recommend any others?

  • No. You can't get any better than this!

  • Thought not! Thanks for the reply!

  • amazing...

  • tomorrow i have my FIRST DAN examination.

I have to do Bassai, Kanku, Shion, Empi, Shite, Hangetzu, Nijushiho, the 5 heian and then repeat one of them. The exam lasts almost 5 hours.

  • wow, i bet your getting another degree in black belt?

  • congratz ;)

  • I am a life member of the JKA, trained in Japan and have been involved for 44 years. My last teacher was Nishiyama sensei (died a month ago). Your shodan test should last about 15 minutes total. Who ever designed your test is an idiot. The test is to determing where you are in your training regarding many factors. An experienced teacher will know that in less than five minutes. For your own good, check out your teachers lineage to the JKA. I have great suspicions regarding his ligitimacy. Osu!

  • I agree with you, iekukataka. I did Bassai Dai as mandatory, and Jion as kata of my choice for shodan.

  • I did this kata for my Blackbelt lol

  • bassai dai is kata for black belt, for colored belts(kyu belts) you need only tokyou shodan, heian shodan, heian nidan, heian sandan, heian jodan, heian godan, and for black-brown belt(1. kyu) to black belt(1. dan) you need tekki shodan, ji'on, bassai dai and kanku dai.

  • This varies from one association to another in fact. Syllabus are many and varied.

  • Yes they are. However, the traditional Shotokan criteria for testing is amazingly standard even among splinter groups. That is until one encounters a knucklehead like the guy who imposed a five hour test for shodan. Rediculous!!!

  • Not quite correct. For my 1st Kyu, I had to do Bassai Dai. I think I have to do it again for 1st Dan. We'll see

  • yea that's true,it can be but, most usually it's like this...till green belt, or 5th kyu or 4th kyu you do the heian katas plus the tekki shodan kata and till the 1st dan you do bassai dai, bassai sho, empi, ji'on and 1 heian kata or tekki shodan, depending what they search you to do.

  • hmmm

i was taught bassai dai meant storm in the fortress

    also i do it different

  • Bassai Dai literally means "to extract and block off" but this is taken to mean "to storm (penetrate) a fortress. Many translations are correct as English and Japanese have totally different roots. The "Anglo-Japanese" used in the Dojo does not always include literal translations and the connotations contained in-between the lines. I have seen a two thousand word translation off "Oss"

  • You mean Osu ;)

  • either way is correct, osu is a phonetic translation of japanese kanji etc, so as long as when read aloud it sounds correct, then it is.

  • yes this IS shotokan! it's the kata to the 2. kyu

  • what style is this? We have the same name but the moves are slightly different. Most of them are the same though.

  • I think its Shotokan

  • it is shotokan but is ur katas name bassai sai?

  • That's very good. It's a little different from my Passai Sho. But basically the same thing.

  • very powerfull, I need a video with all the katas

  • very helpfull.look great

  • OOS OSAKA SENSEI

  • one of my favourite katas! love it!!!

  • BRILLIANT!!!

  • I'd rate it a 8.6/ 10. Could be better. and to cool cat, I dont believe stances to low is possible. Low stances show commitment. It shows you know how to do a kata.

  • this kata is really hard i dont know all of it yet. all i know is up to about the 9th move. and im already a brown belt :)

  • meh

  • Best Bassai-Dai video on the web. Thanks for posting!

  • che gran maestro non ho parole O__O! uno dei miei kata preferiti poi *_*

  • Trained with Sensei Osaka many years ago at

Crystal Palace in London - a very great

    honour.

  • To Coolcat: This is JKA shotokan performed by Osaka sensei 8. Dan JKA. One of the worlds high skills instructors. Please do not come up when any foolish comment! When you have at least trained for 20 years or more, you are worthy to comment on issues related to karate. Until that SHUT AND TRAIN!

  • I'm sorry, I didn't mean to offend anyone... I've been training for 6 years and I've been reprimanded for making my stance that low, so you see why I said that. I'm really sorry again, I didn't mean to offend.

  • *passes flame shield*

  • very cool...if you know karate like him and foshan dragon fist, you're the best to wear a nano-suit from crysis :))

  • I LOVE THIS KATA! But my sensei taught me differently but this guy is so good... but only his stances are a tad too short... But overall this rocks.

  • только у нас учат в зенкуцу дачи заднюю ногу прямой держать ?

  • mizzika! qnt è forte! il my kata!

  • so i can't spell. lrean =learn

  • gaaragirl411

I have lrean this kata for a champioships in 3 day. this was very helpful just because i'm only a brown belt. :)

  • this kata seems to be very strong and effective, but i think osaka has short stances and he's not low enough with his legs. anyway he's very good!

  • i also like this kata. my sensai teach this kata to me same way. bassai dai kata is very strong kata. it has also shdan exam kata.

  • Yeah... me too ^^

I love Bassai & Jion... becauce they're my best katas :P

  • i know this kat, it is my third favorit kata!!

  • Awesome kata! I am really glad to see this video as it is the exact way my sensei taught me with only one minor difference right at the beginning. Ï have a long way to go before it is even half as strong as this!

  • wow!good form!!!

  • i like his kata. it looks very strong and functional

  • Osaka Sensei is one of a very few (Kanazawa being the only other one, though Nishiyama has to be in those ranks, also)I've ever heard called technically perfect in JKA circles. His kime is incredible, correct through all the transitional fazes of technique, his stances so solidly rooted to the ground. I am duly impressed (you should see him do Sochin kata..hot diggety dog).

  • i agree with you

  • thats my kata I own at it lol

  • hmm his kime's definitely VERY good..but still, i kind of don't like the short stances..^^

  • ja ich hatte auch das gefühl. aber vl. liegts am stil, kA... kraft und kime hat er auf jedenfall ^^

  • very excellent

  • Im still learning bassai dai and this video helps a lot, thanks for posting it.

  • This is Osaka sensei. He is the karateka used to illustrate shotokan katas in Master Nakayama's books. The way he performed Bassai Dai is exactly the way it is taught to those who still practice old-style traditional shotokan. The kata was performed excellent. Good kime, techniques and hip rotation for every movement. Traditional Shotokan only has four belts (white, green, brown and black).
