  • Can someone tell me when does this kind of events happen ? I mean season wise ok I'll appreciated it if anyone can help me with this tanks

  • There no "Earth" season that is best, aurora activity depends on soar activity. The sun generally follows an 11 year sunspot cycle, however this most recent cycle had been unusually quiet for quite some time. But over the last few months there has been a significant increase in solar activity and aurora is becoming more common. I am expecting a good summer for Northern Lights. Check the site spaceweather , you can sign up for aurora alerts.

  • Two thumbs up! That was awesome! I lived in ND for six years. I went to NDSU-Bottineau, and coming from Georgia, I got woke up one night by a weird noise...looking out the window and saw an amazing sight. Got dressed and went outside...3am. About 10" of fresh snow. No car tracks or footprints. Standing out there, looking at three crimson curtains above me. Then comes the deputy on patrol. "Son, are you drunk or on drugs?" I pointed up. I told him I was from Georgia. He replied...Ok.

  • Paul, thanks for posting this. I DO MISS watching the Northern Lights, being I'm now living in Arkansas. Greet the family from me. I've shared it on my Facebok site.

  • i just moved to Minot about a week now. i have always been wanting to see these beautiful lights i have talk to people all over about them. im from cali. and finely near and close enough to see them. when is the right time to see this happen?

  • @thespade1984

It can happen any time. They are the result of solar storms hitting the Earth's magnetic field. You can sign up for email alerts at spaceweather . com. Look for the Subscribe link at the top of the page. They also have phone alerts but charge a fee for those. Minot happens to be the best location in the Lower 48 for viewing aurora. We use a thing called the Kp Index. From Minot we can often see aurora at Kp4 but it's dim. K5 and you usually have a good show if the sky is clear.

  • @thespade1984 I'm moving to Bismarck, maybe Minot, on Monday (Oct 3 2011). I want to see this too. Have you yet? Also, have the "immigrants" from Cali, or elsewhrere, effected the culture of ND? I'm tired of Californians' mindets, which is why I'm moving to ND. I'm hoping the Oil Field guys don't turn ND's small towns into small cities, thats what I'm going for.

  • @roarkld I don't know how I missed the Ezekiel Quote at the beginning, but thats the best part of the video. I can't wait to get to North Dakota.

  • I moved to Minot ND last fall (october time frame) and I have no seen these lights yet...WHEN DO THEY HAPPEN!!!?!?!??!

  • @veritas76

There has been no aurora activity at all visible in the Minot area for well over a year, until last night. There was some minimal activity going on after midnight, but unfortunately I didn't have a camera tripod handy. However there has been major solar activity over the last few days so there is a chance that we might see some more aurora.tonight or over the next few nights.

  • As always Paul, your pix are spectacular - you've got such an eye for this, and of course, you've got great material! The photos are really gorgeous!

  • I miss North Dakota! These pictures are awesome! I got to go back during Thanksgiving break--didn't see the northern lights, but the stars sure were pretty...

  • these are beautiful! i live in minot too and looove aurora borealis. how often do they occur here? haven't been living here long.

  • Do you have any new videos? I love your work. Thanks again for sharing. ;-)

  • I am working another video featuring scenes of western North Dakota. I should have been done long ago however some of the images are on slides and it is taking me a bit longer than expected to get scans of the quality that I want.

  • I never see any of these, I live in Southern Texas. I am SICK of this heat as well, we had our hottest summer on record in 2009.

  • Thanks for the great pics...I truly miss North Dakota and the Northern Lights

  • when were these taken?

  • Most were taken over the last few years but a couple were taken during a very strong aurora storm in 1991.

  • those are lovely

  • I love watching the northern lights over Minot!! We always used to watch them when we were driving back from lake sakakawea!

  • Perhaps you saw some of the same aurora as these.

  • that's beautiful!

  • Awe inspiring. Living it and Love it, Luna

  • thats pretty awesome! its a really nice place there! =)

  • i used to live in minot!!! ive watched alot of that when i did live therr! very nice =)

  • Minot's geomagnetic latitude makes it one of the best locations in the Lower 48 for Aurora viewing.
