David Dunbar, young jazz trumpeter, host of the Maddog and Dave TV Show in Denmark & Esperanza should do a collaboration. Off the charts!----Baton Rouge, LA
There was a recent interview between Justin Bieber and Chelsea Lately. Lately asked Justin what he thought about Esperanza. He replied "She worked hard for this..." and smiled, clearly not really knowing who Esperanza is and not thinking she deserved the award. Yea Justin, she did work hard, unlike you Bieber, who got lucky when someone found your videos on youtube. Congrats Ms. Spalding for finally showing the world some genuine talent.
@FrostyPuddle Yeah, the media screwed Beiber over. They turned him more into a product that expresses what they want him to say. If you you listen some of Beiber's other songs such "Pray," you get a sense that Beiber's as innocent and naive as most kids his age. But the thing is his pop career is based on his image which is why such songs aren't popular.
It's really nice and refreshing to see a huge award given to someone that has such a positive presence and pure talent, rather than the type of music that is destructive. The destructive music that I speak about is the music with words like Bi**h and Ni**a or er at the end, and lyrics that talk about money, murder and bling bling. This is so refreshing, uplifting and hopeful for our community and our society. Keep Up the GOOD work Ms. ESPERANZA SPALDING. Much Love, Lorenzo
15 who disliked this should follow Bieber back to Canada. There is a difference between entertainment and art. Once upon a time music was a bout art. When you have a true artist their talents should be applauded and celebrated. Anyone can get behind a synthesizer and yell and jump around and lip sync on stage. Esperanza will not give you a show, she will give you a performance, a masterpiece every time.
In one word "Mesmerizing" she is the most exciting musician I have heard of in years, you should also take a listen to her doing Lauryn Hill's Tell him, and the BET awards (Prince's If I was you girlfriend)...Bieber? he might as well be singing the phone book.
I'm from New Orleans & love jazz. So great a jazz artist won that Grammy.
Must confess I'm a Belieber too. I can appreciate a snappy pop tune by a cute kid. w/drum skills, a cool voice & iconic haircut.
I also love John Coltrane & Miles & Mingus & Ella & Stevie Wonder & Hendrix...
I once sat in a San Francisco hotel room & listened to Bobby Brown's "My Prerogative" LP with the late, great drummer Art Blakey for hours. What a blast.

AMAZING! She's just on a different level in the musical world. I love the way she speaks to us w/ her musical instruments. Music is a language only few can understand. WOW.......
I was curious to listen to this newly anointed grammy winner. I am not disappointed. She's gifted. I respect her class and grace also. Keep up the good work!
These are a bunch of intelligent people listening to Esperanza. I wonder how Justin Bieber is compared if he is invited in the White House and sings "Baby".
@rontubo I have been a fan of her for some years, but this "intelligent" thing is such an obnoxious idea. I listen to Classical Music, so I must be more intelligent than people who listen to contemporary music, including her. Oh, and I watch imported silent films unavialable in USA, so I must be VERY intelligent. Beiber's music has its audience, and so does her music. Get over yourself.
Bieber is a Pop Singer and Esperanza is a Jazz musician. Bieber has appeal to those that like Pop music. There really isn't any comparison between the two, one is an artist and one is the flavor of the moment.
@Cedarflame that is true but she is a more complete musician.......................besides if you see the Oscar you see they put Avatar with the movie in Irak ......apples and oranges again right?......Esperanza is really talented but I am sure you can find many like her in the music schools.......with that much or more talent................but you would think that the grammy's will find a James Brown, MJ, Elvis, Ella Fitzgerald etc etc nothing yet.....................
@Cedarflame Not everyone who enjoys pop likes Beibers. I've come across two individuals who listen to pop who don't care for Beiber. One's an internet reviewer of Pop music and the other is a commentator/anime nerd much like myself. But your point still stands. Hell I found myself wasting my breath trying to explain to one Beiber-brat how artists operate.
@Cedarflame why even waste time and breath comparing the two? They are in different universes and everyone who knows anything knows that. Jazz is music. That tv kid is nothing and he'll be gone tomorrow.
Why are people upset or surprised? the award was for best new "ARTIST"!! she's an ARTIST just like the presenter JOHN LEGEND. justin biber is just a famous SINGER not an ARTIST..an artist doesnt have to be famous they just have to be good and different than any other SINGER. Justin beiber's music is popular but its NOTHING special. He could have won if the award was for best new "SINGER" but this award is for ARTISTS only
@ShaggieTV Huzzah... Someone gets it. I can't believe there are people like you who know the difference between a fad and an artist. Oh man, I think my expectation for the human intellect just shot up a few clicks upon reading this.
And it's wonderful that FINALLY somebody won a Grammy who can sing live, perfectly in tune without autotune, and without obnoxious tricks like jumping out of eggs. This is talent in a pure form, the only that should be winning Grammys.
@chasca23 did you ever heard of Mary J Blige? ... she's the best live singer ever.. and she won the grammy for best new artist.. as a real best 'NEW" artist.
@SergioSPogi A sentiment I can understand, since the media has the habit of promoting flash and fluff over substance. As an artist who working to perfect his style, I thought I never had a shot in the world, as it seemed people were accepting the lack of substance in writing and music. Spalding's victory at the Grammys proved me wrong, which gives me hope. :)
Why are people getting on her video and hating on Justin bieber you all know she wouldn't have won if she had not played at the white house hint hint!!!
What a gorgeous and talented woman. I was one of those who was like who the fuck is this when she won the grammy, but after watching a few videos on utube I realize she's well deserving. Hope to hear more from her in the future.
Stop the hate - Justin beiber is a 16 year old kid - thats showbusiness - Esperanza is obviously high art and sophistication - there is enough room for both. You cannot blame a 15 year old girl for having a poster of bieber on her bedroom wall - I am 56 and I like both of them
@kalcom2 I don't hate Justin Bieber but I hate his music and I think people like him are ruining good music, where it was about music and not making money.
Justin Bieber fans should be put into sacks and thrown in a river for showing a total corruption of musical taste. Well done the Grammys for actually showing some balls for once.
@portigoza Yes the demographic of easily manipulated masses. That's why there's hate for Beiber. He has talent, but he's no artists for artists define themselves, and not repeat the exact same scene people have seen a thousand times. Besides Beiber's fame isn't based on his talent, but his image.
That's Tony Bennet...He's been singing and being one of the most acclaimed jazz artists for the last 40+ years. Should probably keep your hands tied and listen to more music kiddo.
Ok just to make sure ...Color , tint , has nothing to do with this right. people are actually listening to her Voice right ? and comparing it to other past Greats. Just wanted to make sure. I will keep an open mind for the next 5 songs...
@surfacer97 don't say that just because Drake is commercially successful that he hasn't been a moving force in his genre that's assuming a lot esperanza is a gifted musician but Drake is not only as gifted at what he does but he also has been able to draw attention to his genre from people who had written off rap. has esperanza been able to attract that attention to jazz? no. if people listen to her they were already listening to jazz. or got pissed off watching the grammy's
@Dnateog well how can esperanza attract attention to jazz if she's not famous? and she's not famous because no one listens to jazz anymore. do you expect of her to make jazz as popular as rap? even before drake, rap was always in the top 40 ever since the 90s. but jazz is a genre that the mainstream has turned away from since the 60s. it would take a lot to get people interested in jazz again, especially young people, but now that esperanza has a grammy, maybe that'll happen.
I was surprised that she won Best New Artist only for the fact that I've been following her music for a coule of years now. It's great to hear that they are acknowleding real musicians at the Grammy's over Bieber and Drake who are more mainstream.
She definitely deserved that Grammy, incredible talent and down to earth. She has play with the best, from Herbie Hancock to Prince. And now more people will be exposed to her music.
When someone beats you or your favorite in a competition you congratulate them. It's called being a good sport and acting mature. When someone completely outclasses both new and established artists you sit up, take notice and then go download their music.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
I was so surprised that she won. I was positive Justin would win...now we know they don't vote with popularity. I don't really like her though...I don't like jazz or whatever this is. justin deserved the award but good job anyways esperanza.
@justinbieberfreakism I don't think bieber deserved it but it's nice to know there are bieber fans out there who don't get so immature over one award.
She is great, but why does it have to be one or the other? She's awesome, but so is JB! Took my daughter to see his movie yesterday, and he is a very talented kid, that seems to have had a good upbringing. Congrats to Esperanza, but her talent doesn't diminish his!
@theMACster1000 The kid has talent, but he's no artist. An artist spends years honing their craft, before sharing it with the world. Beiber had 9 years to hone his talents, before he was snatched up by Usher, and then stuck in a rut of making the same kind of music N Sync, The Jonas Bros, and The Backstreet Boys made. Beiber's material is nothing new, but rather rehashed for a younger generation who wasn't raised on real music.
@DemonicRemption same kind of music as nsync, jonas bros and bsb? you're way off, but thats not the point. just because you happen to not typically enjoy this type of music, doesn't mean other people don't. i feel like justin has done something in his genre of music that no one has accomplished before. he has made a name for himself and just because someone ends up becoming insanely popular, doesn't make them any less of an artist. this is his career too... and he is definitely successful.
@theMACster1000 enlighten me on how he's made a name for himself, and how he's different from his predecessors? And it's not his popularity that makes him less of an artist, it's his execution. His singing is good, but it still needs work. He never plays any instruments on his studio recorded tracks, and his dancing is just like Mj's and Usher's. He does not stand out. And if you weren't so oblivious, you'd know that. We're done, I've wasted time explaining this to you.
@theMACster1000 While having success is one thing, maintaining it is another. You remember Twilight, Miley Cyrus, The Jonas Brothers? They were incredibly successful, and where are they now? No where. Beiber's talents doesn't mean diddly, because he doesn't use it to diversify himself from other Popstars. Hell Gaga and Katy Perry are more diverse from other mainstream artists than Beiber currently is. That's his flaw.
@DemonicRemption It confuses me as to why you think that your subjective feelings determine the "realness" of someone's artistry or artist status. An artist is someone who practices a skill or produces a work in any of the artistic realms. You cannot determine the "realness" of an artist because there is no such thing as a "fake" or "unreal" artist. You simply don't like his music or his style of music and therefore you arbitrarily decide that he must not be an artist.
@jsmithr56 You misunderstand me. An artist stands out, and differentiates himself from his peers in the same genre. You listen to any Jazz musician, R&B singer from the motown era, or any Metal or Rock band, no two sound alike, and they have range as to the subjects they sing about. Beiber's music is nothing new, and that's what makes him inexperienced artist, which is why he lost.
@DemonicRemption "a younger generation who wasn't raised on real music." To reiterate, there's no such thing as "fake" music, so there's no such thing as "real" music. Music is music is music is music is music (I'd continue but I only have a limited amount of characters). You very well may recognize what I'm telling you, but the means by which you articulate your feelings says otherwise. The music you speak poorly of is the music you don't like (for WHATEVER reason), and that is all.
@jsmithr56 So I guess there's no such thing as quality or improved talent among you humans either. While any form of melody is music. There are things called quality and effort. Repeating the same sound and tone without any diversity, is a lack in quality. I understand what reoccurring themes are, but you fail to see is that in mainstream there is very little diversity among the so called artists.
@DemonicRemption Your response to me was more or less what I was looking from you. It details your subjective feelings about quality and effort and that is all. You don't raise the issue of "realness" where instead you share your feelings about what potentially determines a quality artist. I was merely looking for an appropriate change in semantics. And perhaps I'd even agree with you about the lack of diversity (and maybe even lack of quality) in certain areas of the music industry.
@jsmithr56 You will never agree with me, because who don't understand what an artist, nay what anyone who carries a passion for a career has to go through. The years of defining themselves, and learning about their craft, before being introduced to the world. An artist stays true to themselves while knowing their audience, while Pop sensations only give what the media wants them to show.
@DemonicRemption If you misunderstood my last comment, I was commending your correct use of language when describing your feelings about music. Secondly, an artist is an artist is an artist is an artist. What has led them to become a QUALITY artist is a matter of opinion, an opinion to which you are surely entitled, but what has led them to be simply deemed an artist is objective and not up to you.
@jsmithr56 You humans and your excusing of mediocrity really irritates me. I can clearly see you have no sense of individuality and only go with what people tell you. You may know what an artist is, but you don't understand them in the slightest. So do me a favor and quit wasting my time with your excusing of mediocrity.
@DemonicRemption For example: "An artist stays true to themselves" is incorrect. To correctly express your feelings you might instead say: "A QUALITY artist stays true to him or herself." The amount of time one spends on their craft is as well irrelevant to the definition of "artist." You need to separate your subjective feelings from the objective definition of artist. They have nothing to do with each other.
@jsmithr56 Again you're excusing mediocrity. A quality artist does indeed stay true to themselves, as you are clearly saying it's okay for someone to waste their talents and potential as they are stuck in a repetitive rut only to get paid. If that's modern man's interpretation of an artist than we're done. I don't want you to continue to waste my time with this piss poor excuse of an argument, because u have no concept of quality or effort. No human does. Good day sir.
@DemonicRemption Look up artist in any dictionary and the words "quality" and "effort" will never appear. The spectrum of artists spans from no quality to high quality. You don't get to cut off the end you don't like. I think it's perfectly fine that someone sings, and not even particularly well, to just get paid and that's all. So why is it that you get to decide that your OPINION about someone of such a quality is right? How is my OPINION any less correct than yours?
@DemonicRemption Here's a new angle, please read :). You believe that in order to be worthy of the "artist" title, one must have certain qualities that are worthy of respect: for example, a certain level of quality and effort. This is inherently flawed in that worthiness is subjective, and therefore, according to you, the definition of an artist is restricted to what is worthy of your, and only your, respect. If you expect people to follow this, then you must be confused. You see?
wow...no wonder she won! i'd never heard of her until now. impressive!! i guess the stupid "pop factory machine" couldn't b.s. their way past actual talent this year!

These are a bunch of intelligent people listening to Esperanza. I wonder how Justin Bieber is compared if he is invited in the White House and sings "Baby".
rontubo 11 months ago

Cedarflame 11 months ago 55
@Cedarflame that is true but she is a more complete musician.......................besides if you see the Oscar you see they put Avatar with the movie in Irak ......apples and oranges again right?......Esperanza is really talented but I am sure you can find many like her in the music schools.......with that much or more talent................but you would think that the grammy's will find a James Brown, MJ, Elvis, Ella Fitzgerald etc etc nothing yet.....................
atta1798 11 months ago
@Cedarflame Not everyone who enjoys pop likes Beibers. I've come across two individuals who listen to pop who don't care for Beiber. One's an internet reviewer of Pop music and the other is a commentator/anime nerd much like myself. But your point still stands. Hell I found myself wasting my breath trying to explain to one Beiber-brat how artists operate.
DemonicRemption 11 months ago
@Cedarflame why even waste time and breath comparing the two? They are in different universes and everyone who knows anything knows that. Jazz is music. That tv kid is nothing and he'll be gone tomorrow.
wisefool76 7 months ago
Why are people upset or surprised? the award was for best new "ARTIST"!! she's an ARTIST just like the presenter JOHN LEGEND. justin biber is just a famous SINGER not an ARTIST..an artist doesnt have to be famous they just have to be good and different than any other SINGER. Justin beiber's music is popular but its NOTHING special. He could have won if the award was for best new "SINGER" but this award is for ARTISTS only
ShaggieTV 11 months ago 7
@ShaggieTV Huzzah... Someone gets it. I can't believe there are people like you who know the difference between a fad and an artist. Oh man, I think my expectation for the human intellect just shot up a few clicks upon reading this.

Stop the hate - Justin beiber is a 16 year old kid - thats showbusiness - Esperanza is obviously high art and sophistication - there is enough room for both. You cannot blame a 15 year old girl for having a poster of bieber on her bedroom wall - I am 56 and I like both of them
kalcom2 11 months ago 2
@kalcom2 I don't hate Justin Bieber but I hate his music and I think people like him are ruining good music, where it was about music and not making money.

portigoza 11 months ago 3
@portigoza Yes the demographic of easily manipulated masses. That's why there's hate for Beiber. He has talent, but he's no artists for artists define themselves, and not repeat the exact same scene people have seen a thousand times. Besides Beiber's fame isn't based on his talent, but his image.

Dnateog 11 months ago
@Dnateog well how can esperanza attract attention to jazz if she's not famous? and she's not famous because no one listens to jazz anymore. do you expect of her to make jazz as popular as rap? even before drake, rap was always in the top 40 ever since the 90s. but jazz is a genre that the mainstream has turned away from since the 60s. it would take a lot to get people interested in jazz again, especially young people, but now that esperanza has a grammy, maybe that'll happen.
emily1604 11 months ago
I was surprised that she won Best New Artist only for the fact that I've been following her music for a coule of years now. It's great to hear that they are acknowleding real musicians at the Grammy's over Bieber and Drake who are more mainstream.

Cedarflame 11 months ago 121
@Cedarflame are you trying to imply that justin bieber doesnt have talent?
theMACster1000 11 months ago
@theMACster1000 The kid has talent, but he's no artist. An artist spends years honing their craft, before sharing it with the world. Beiber had 9 years to hone his talents, before he was snatched up by Usher, and then stuck in a rut of making the same kind of music N Sync, The Jonas Bros, and The Backstreet Boys made. Beiber's material is nothing new, but rather rehashed for a younger generation who wasn't raised on real music.
DemonicRemption 11 months ago
@DemonicRemption same kind of music as nsync, jonas bros and bsb? you're way off, but thats not the point. just because you happen to not typically enjoy this type of music, doesn't mean other people don't. i feel like justin has done something in his genre of music that no one has accomplished before. he has made a name for himself and just because someone ends up becoming insanely popular, doesn't make them any less of an artist. this is his career too... and he is definitely successful.
theMACster1000 11 months ago
@theMACster1000 enlighten me on how he's made a name for himself, and how he's different from his predecessors? And it's not his popularity that makes him less of an artist, it's his execution. His singing is good, but it still needs work. He never plays any instruments on his studio recorded tracks, and his dancing is just like Mj's and Usher's. He does not stand out. And if you weren't so oblivious, you'd know that. We're done, I've wasted time explaining this to you.
DemonicRemption 11 months ago
@DemonicRemption everyones entitled to their own opinion... and i think that justin bieber's incredible success in the past year speaks for itself.
theMACster1000 11 months ago
@theMACster1000 While having success is one thing, maintaining it is another. You remember Twilight, Miley Cyrus, The Jonas Brothers? They were incredibly successful, and where are they now? No where. Beiber's talents doesn't mean diddly, because he doesn't use it to diversify himself from other Popstars. Hell Gaga and Katy Perry are more diverse from other mainstream artists than Beiber currently is. That's his flaw.
DemonicRemption 11 months ago

FrostyPuddle 11 months ago
@FrostyPuddle Seriously? With as many "hits" as he has? So much for being the "Greatest Rapper Of Our Time."
DemonicRemption 11 months ago
@DemonicRemption It confuses me as to why you think that your subjective feelings determine the "realness" of someone's artistry or artist status. An artist is someone who practices a skill or produces a work in any of the artistic realms. You cannot determine the "realness" of an artist because there is no such thing as a "fake" or "unreal" artist. You simply don't like his music or his style of music and therefore you arbitrarily decide that he must not be an artist.
jsmithr56 11 months ago
@jsmithr56 You misunderstand me. An artist stands out, and differentiates himself from his peers in the same genre. You listen to any Jazz musician, R&B singer from the motown era, or any Metal or Rock band, no two sound alike, and they have range as to the subjects they sing about. Beiber's music is nothing new, and that's what makes him inexperienced artist, which is why he lost.
DemonicRemption 11 months ago
@DemonicRemption "a younger generation who wasn't raised on real music." To reiterate, there's no such thing as "fake" music, so there's no such thing as "real" music. Music is music is music is music is music (I'd continue but I only have a limited amount of characters). You very well may recognize what I'm telling you, but the means by which you articulate your feelings says otherwise. The music you speak poorly of is the music you don't like (for WHATEVER reason), and that is all.
jsmithr56 11 months ago
@jsmithr56 So I guess there's no such thing as quality or improved talent among you humans either. While any form of melody is music. There are things called quality and effort. Repeating the same sound and tone without any diversity, is a lack in quality. I understand what reoccurring themes are, but you fail to see is that in mainstream there is very little diversity among the so called artists.
DemonicRemption 11 months ago
@DemonicRemption Your response to me was more or less what I was looking from you. It details your subjective feelings about quality and effort and that is all. You don't raise the issue of "realness" where instead you share your feelings about what potentially determines a quality artist. I was merely looking for an appropriate change in semantics. And perhaps I'd even agree with you about the lack of diversity (and maybe even lack of quality) in certain areas of the music industry.
jsmithr56 11 months ago
@jsmithr56 You will never agree with me, because who don't understand what an artist, nay what anyone who carries a passion for a career has to go through. The years of defining themselves, and learning about their craft, before being introduced to the world. An artist stays true to themselves while knowing their audience, while Pop sensations only give what the media wants them to show.
DemonicRemption 11 months ago
@DemonicRemption If you misunderstood my last comment, I was commending your correct use of language when describing your feelings about music. Secondly, an artist is an artist is an artist is an artist. What has led them to become a QUALITY artist is a matter of opinion, an opinion to which you are surely entitled, but what has led them to be simply deemed an artist is objective and not up to you.
jsmithr56 11 months ago
@jsmithr56 You humans and your excusing of mediocrity really irritates me. I can clearly see you have no sense of individuality and only go with what people tell you. You may know what an artist is, but you don't understand them in the slightest. So do me a favor and quit wasting my time with your excusing of mediocrity.
DemonicRemption 11 months ago
@DemonicRemption For example: "An artist stays true to themselves" is incorrect. To correctly express your feelings you might instead say: "A QUALITY artist stays true to him or herself." The amount of time one spends on their craft is as well irrelevant to the definition of "artist." You need to separate your subjective feelings from the objective definition of artist. They have nothing to do with each other.
jsmithr56 11 months ago
@jsmithr56 Again you're excusing mediocrity. A quality artist does indeed stay true to themselves, as you are clearly saying it's okay for someone to waste their talents and potential as they are stuck in a repetitive rut only to get paid. If that's modern man's interpretation of an artist than we're done. I don't want you to continue to waste my time with this piss poor excuse of an argument, because u have no concept of quality or effort. No human does. Good day sir.
DemonicRemption 11 months ago
@DemonicRemption Look up artist in any dictionary and the words "quality" and "effort" will never appear. The spectrum of artists spans from no quality to high quality. You don't get to cut off the end you don't like. I think it's perfectly fine that someone sings, and not even particularly well, to just get paid and that's all. So why is it that you get to decide that your OPINION about someone of such a quality is right? How is my OPINION any less correct than yours?
jsmithr56 10 months ago
@DemonicRemption Here's a new angle, please read :). You believe that in order to be worthy of the "artist" title, one must have certain qualities that are worthy of respect: for example, a certain level of quality and effort. This is inherently flawed in that worthiness is subjective, and therefore, according to you, the definition of an artist is restricted to what is worthy of your, and only your, respect. If you expect people to follow this, then you must be confused. You see?
jsmithr56 10 months ago
