You don't understand why Marty Stuart is in that video? #1 It's his Band!!!!! #2 It's his wife!!! 3# Thersong requires acoustic rythm. Probably the MOST important instrument in country music. It's where it all starts. #4 It's his show!!!
Great song from one of the greatest female country singers of all time. I met Connie on the Faron Young tour of Scotland in 1973. When she sang "How Great Thou Art" on stage you could have heard a pin drop. I know we can't post links to other sites here but do a search on the net for Connie in Glasgow, Scotland and you will find me and her!
I dont understand why Marty Stuart is in this awesome video. He does nothing to enhance the most talented female singer of all times. He should stay out of Connies career!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
This is real country music, I could listen to Connie Smith all day long. Is she still touring, if so, I would like to know if she ever come out to San Diego?
She was great when she first recorded this song ...and even better now! What a voice! If the truth be known, even more beautiful now! Marty looks good on her...Amazing what true Love can do for you huh!!!!!
back in the day...in the middle of the sixties...country music was not cool...unless..you came from the south...but being from the city and NJ...NY...area...i had to sneak inside a room somewhere and listen to the wonderful music....so my friends would not see me listening to this....so called hick music...but my love for it was too much...i just had to listen to it....if you could find in on the am radio stations at the time....connie really rocks with this song....
The way nashville is now this great lady will be old and feble and Taylor Swift will be inducted to the Country Hall of Fame befor this Talent ever get's nod...Nashville is slowly dieing...Pop Go"s Nashville
People please bear in mind that Ms Connie Smith still holds the record for a number 1 by female on the billboard chart this song spent 8 weeks consecutively no other woman has done that
It baffles me why some are in too early and others have to be on there death bed before they get in. If Vince is in, then Alan should surely be in, and others as well.
@tpage6 I know what you mean-like Webb Pierce. Had more # 1's than anyone in the fifties and died in 1991. Was not put in Country Hall of Fame until 2001. Elvis Presley and Brenda Lee who never claimed to be country singers went in before he did. They waited years to put Carl Smith in also.
@olehoundog1 U know you and I will surely see eye to eye on this I wa sso mad taht Jean Shepard was not inducted I called cma spoke to someone there I mention Dottie and Skeeter too
@MrWayneWhite Thanks for the reply. While we are on the subject, how about Dolly going in 1999 , 3 years before Porter. Loretta Lynn went in in 1988, the Wilburn Brothers are still not in there. I love Loretta and Dolly, but reckon where they would have been without Porter and the Wilburn Brothers?
@MrWayneWhite How about Alabama, Glen Campbell, and Reba being in the Hall of Fame and not Cowboy Copas, Wilburn Brothers and a host of true traditional artists who helped make country music.
Yes, Marty Stuart is playing guitar & he is married to Connie Smith~~Have loved her singing for yrs. The Marty Stuart Show is on weekly on the RFD channel & Connie Smith is on the show, too.
Hard to believe Connie is 68 years old in this video. Even if there is a tad of plastic surgery in there (and I'm NOT saying there is, but considering how celebrities are these days, there could be) - she looks great. Even more important, she sounds great. A real country music icon!
This is my signature song; over the years, whenever I would be asked to sing a tune with my dad's band on occasion, I always included this one. Fantastic. Thank you for posting it here.
Comparing Shania Twain to Connie Smith or Patsy Cline is like apples to oranges. Shania herself, though VERY talented, has said in interviews that she herself doubts that she will ever have the legacy or longevity that Patsy Cline has had. The truth is, nobody will. Nashville is a scene of financial record promotion today - talent isnt always as important. And honestly, the legacy of Smith or Cline cant compare to anyone's trophies or achievements. A legacy lasts longer, which Twain realizes.
Bill Anderson wrote it (as he did her other monster classic, Nobody But A Fool). Weldon Myrick played steel and Connie Smith sang it. It doesn't get much better than that.
In the years which have passed by since Ms. Smith had this go to number 1 for 8 weeks (I think), she has polished her voice beautifully, though it is difficult to compare the sound rigs years ago and today's. However, I feel that her voice is rounder, smoother and more expressive. Country music owes a great debt owing to both Ms. Smith and her musicians.
Can it get any better? NOT HARDLY!!!!!!!! A dangerous combination...a GREAT voice and GORGEOUS TOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Shania Twain....EAT YOUR HEART OUT!!!!!!
what has she done that is worth mentioning in the same Space as Connie Smith? Nothing that I can think of. Today's so called Country ladies are nothing but a Flash in the Pan. Just Glitz and Glammor. That is ALL that is out there now.
I love Connie. Probably one of the most underrated female voices ever. But in terms of accomplishment, she doesn't compare to Shania. Shania has the best-selling album by a female musician of all-time. She has several #1 singles. She has several Grammy, CMA, and other awards.
@zomgitsant ...you want to talk awards...try going back before 1990, but I guess you weren't around. The GREATEST Country song EVER...Stand By your Man...Tammy Wynette. You can check that if you want. She didn't have more Number ones than Loretta Lynn.
@manny5442 I was born in 1990, but I do know quite a lot about country music before my time. But why are you bringing up Tammy Wynette now, when we were strictly talking about Connie Smith vs. Shania Twain? I'm not saying Shania has more vocal talent (because she doesn't). And I love Connie. I'm 19 years old, and I have some Connie Smith songs on my iPod. I have Patsy Cline's Greatest Hits album and other songs as well. I'm just saying don't overlook Shania's achievements.
@BuddyNHiram You should have seen her at the Opry 75 Anniversary back in 2000 when she paid homage to Marty Robbins she just ripped through that song. Then she sang with Reba and boy I was in heaven.
She still has a great voice. Maybe even better than when she was younger. She still doesn't look bad but , like the rest of us, not as good as she used to. That's the trouble with age, it's just too damn old!
I love this song, thanks for posting this version, it's super! Would have liked to have heard some male back up vocals with her though. I'll keep looking around, maybe I'll run into a version like that!
What a wonderful rendition of this country classic. Why is it that singers like Connie Smith and Jean Shepard get ignored when it comes to the selections for the Country Music Hall of Fame? Once again politics over-rules talent!
first off, im a male,,,and unfortanatly the " country Music Hall Of Fame is run by a bunch of male's , that said,,,ya get the pichure, if they thay were to go by Talent Connie Smith would have been put in the the hall of fame years ago
Well said. I'm a guy, too. But if I had a vote, Connie Smith would have been in the CMHOF years ago. I just can't believe that some shallow 19 year old teeny bopper was CMA's "Entertainer of the Year!" That is all that needs to be said about where the genre has gone. Glitz, fru-fru, T&A, and money. Tallent be Damned!
So proud that Weldon attended the same school I did and he is my friend, but how did he end up with all the talent? :) Seriously, people in this area of Texas are "proud as punch" of Weldon and his accomplishments. Way to go, Weldon!
Weldon Myrick is my all time favorite steel guitar player and "Once A Day" is the perfect song to illustrate what steel guitar accompaniment is all about. I've always loved that song and Connie too!
Yes, that's Marty. This is from his show on the RFD network. He said he first met her when he was 12 and said he was going to marry her one day. What a great love story.
You get no argument here...Keith Urban isn't a country singer...he looks like he should be on a Soap Opera...And Rascall Flatts make me want to puke!!!
