  • A Legend that will last a lunchtime

  • God he's thin!

  • I see that John and George got their own microphones at last...

  • The Rutles story is a legend. A living legend.

A legend that will live a lifetime, long after lots of other living legends have died.

The Rutles were a semi-legendary group who made the sixties what they are today.

The Prefab Four: Dirk, Nasty, Stig and Barry.

    Sir Leggy Mountbatten

  • kiss my asds! this is soo fuki fuuny.

  • How much and where?

  • awesome!

    loove you Eric!!

    = )

  • The Rutles are just too brilliant! You could watch the film and listen to the songs hundred of times and still discover new, detailed Beatles references everywhere. I love Neil Innes's work with Bonzo Dog, Monty Python, etc., but with The Rutles he hit it out of the ballpark. Genius!

  • Eric Idle's mimicry of McCartney is bang on!

  • apparently Lennon thought the film was funny but warned Neil Innes that this was the song that McCartney might sue them for as it was a bit too close to the mark! I love this film and the songs are fantastic. Eric Idle is a genius.

  • Dear Viewer: My favorite girl is the one in the red sweater. I wonder if she's still got some "get up and go." With those copper colered eyes. Dan K., Grafton, Mass.

  • Dear Sir or Madam: Does that hottie with the Red Sweater on top of the other building still live? She has a lot of "Get UP and GO" back in 1980. Dan K., Grafton, Mass., USA

  • By the legal definition of parody this is one. A common misconception in our society is that a person such as Weird Al is a parodist when in truth he is a satirist. It's just another example of misuse of a term.

Bottom line is this is funny as hell! The Rutles are Brilliant! Any real Beatle fan would comprehend all the sublties of their work. The Rutles are as if Montey Python procreated.

  • ya the sublties are what really make me laugh. the small details that they put into it make me die of laughter. but to get it, you really have to be a beatle fanatic...or have lived during that time.....

  • Perhaps because newer generations of Beatle fans live in a different sphere.

I remember in the 70's when I was a kid you could not dial the radio without hearing 1 or 2 Beatle songs. All that has changed. Kids youtube things, get fancy new repackaged tunes and live during a time where only 1.5(Ringo wasn't tall enough to be a full Beatle lol)Beatles control the message. I for one appreciate the effort the Rultes made to interpet the Beatles.

  • yeah, people who have lived through beatlemania have a completely perspective of it. It really isnt the same now with out george and john. but i'm greatful that we can still enjoy their genius work, and enjoy the humor of the rutles too!

  • Not all people who lived through Beatlemania enjoyed the latter stages though. I think those people especially would never get humor dryer than 150 year old prostitute.

  • To like the Rutles I think you must be a little insane. This insanity could be the result of your environment and or it could be self inflicted. Either way you must tune in and gaze deeply into the penguin a top your now flat screen tv that keeps falling over and ponder if you went to the Bounder Travel Agent Service would you have taken the BJ instead of curing your speech impediment which up to that point you were completely unaware of. (that's a run on sentence if I ever typed one)

  • The one that plays Ron Nasty wrote all the songs for this movie. I LOVE THIS MOVIE ITS SO FUNNY

  • love this. Fantastic. pissed myself laughing when he kicks the guy out of the way at the beginning

  • wow! i remember those days! back when channel 38 was WSBK and played the Stooges on Sat and Sun mornings. Creature Double Feature flicks all afternoon after the cartoons were over. Luv Benny Hill but NOBODY is funnier than the Pythons! Not even The Beatles and they were pretty fuck'n funny in their own right.

  • So a station said Benny Hill is funnier. Great. Good for you - we all really care.

  • Great comedy film. The songs by Neil Innes are bang on the money.

  • the john lennon character and the drummer live in my home town the drummer (barry wom) runs a pub! nice!

  • Really??? You think so?

  • yeah. for me.

  • Gosh, you're right. Come to think of it a lot of The Rutles songs sound like Beatles songs. It's almost as if it were some sort of um .... I don't know, parody?

  • LMAO

  • Parody? Not sure. But what I do know is they were well thought out and done.

  • Do you even know what a parody is? PARODY: A literary or artistic work that imitates the characteristic style of an author or a work for comic effect or ridicule. Yeah, looks and sounds like a parody to me.

  • This is good music. If you want funny, listen to Weird Al...

  • You fucking spacker, ask any MAJOR fan of the Beatles and they will tell you that this musics is HILARIOUS! Exactly as it was meant to be ... it's just too bad that you are not in on the joke.

  • Oh wait! Obeijin, did you even realize that these guys are NOT The Beatles? That would explain your inability not to recognize the comic genius at work here.

  • If those songs weren't even beatles's songs parody, they would have been great anyway

  • could they have written songs themselves though?

  • the only thing un authentic avout this is the weather, much more overcast on the beatles version

  • Lord Mountbatten?

  • I take it this is shortly before the Rutles broke up and sued each other. And Stig O'Hara accidently sued himself!

  • get back home jojo!!!

  • I was only joking about Paul. I admire his work and what he did to influence the rock industry, he influenced a lot of todays artists.(as long as you don't count frog chorus). But im afraid the best thing Ringo did was Thomas The Tank Engine. In an interviw with the Beatles when they were asked if Ringo was the best drummer in the world I think it was John who replied "he isn't even the best drummer in the Beatles".

  • John later apologized for that flippant remark. Ringo is without question a great drummer. His skins on "A Day in the Life" are classic. In fact, all of the Beatles were great musicians, with the possible exception of John, and John was a world-class singer and songwriter.

  • In a conversation I had with Charles Manson, he told me that Ringo admitted to him that he stole Barry Wom's drumming technique and refused to give it back, which later caused problems between band members in the Rutles and they eventually split up. All because of Ringo Starr's greed and laziness. I hope you're happy! :(

  • You'e got to be joking - this is definitely not as good as the original.

Paul was one of the greatest if not the greatest bass player and Ringo was a damn fine drummer. Where do you get your info from?

  • Lord Mountbatten hated their music, but loved their trousers. LOL!

  • The trousers were winners! Lol They were very..um..very tight. Left nothing to the imagination.

  • The Beatles ripped these guys off! The Rutles should've sued!!

  • BETTER THAN GET BACK !!!

  • Yeah, just thinking that - suppose they took 'Get Back' and improved on it - Neil Innes (playing the John Lennon part here) is a skilled multi-musician in the UK!

  • it's called ear wax. see your doctor about it! :))

  • it IS better than Get Back! Just listen!

  • the Rutles are just like the Beatles only they've got a real drummer and bass player

  • Their second album 'Archaeology' is a damned fine record.

They even parody Oasis on it.

Neil Innes is a clever and talented man.

    Here's to him!

  • i agree Ringo wasnt the greatest but Paul was underestimated as a musician.

  • If that's true, why is Paul considered one of the most influential bass players? And Ringo was solid as a ROCK.

  • haha.. just like in get back they are on a roof or something playing.. Fun idea to be like a prodyband xD

  • I hope they passed the audition....

  • their songs are nice but they copied the beatles, so they are copions!

  • that's the whole point!

  • they are the copions!!

  • This make fun of "Get Back"

  • yes

  • it actually is really close to get back without being the same. its really well done

  • actually this is exactly the same. same chord progression and melody. there is no difference other than the lyrics and the solo.

  • there better than the beatles.

  • noooo, they are the copions of the beatles!!! grrrrr!!! don't touch my beatles

  • I love how Nasty kicks that guy off the building at the start

  • Most people that put down the Rutles special originally never saw it. It was truely a labor of love and a tribute to the Beatles. Of course John wasn't happy with the portrayal of Yoko.

  • Ehhh... I heard John and Yoko both loved it.

  • lol. how could she love that she was called the daughter of the man who invented WW2.

  • Because she has a sense of humor.

  • how would you know?

  • Apart from Eric Idle saying so?

  • how would he know?

  • Well he... knew him.... and Neil Innes (of The Rutles) was pals with Paul McCartney, who produced a single for Innes' band with Viv Stanshall in the 70's - The Bonzo Dog Doo Dah Band. The Beatles and Rutles' histories are constantly overlapping; they all knew each other at least a bit. And Eric and George Harrison were good friends.

  • Neil Innes was in The Magical Mystery Tour film.

  • Well, most people were offended by her singing (or lack thereof), so I guess karmically, they're even.

  • great song. i think my band is gonna do it linked to get back.

  • Nasty was by then working with Chastity on the Plastic Hitler Band's first album

  • its scary how much eric idle looks like paul!

  • Am I the only one to think that this song is actually better than the Beatles'?

  • yes.

  • HEY i love the Beatles. The Rutles are like an alternative universe xxx

  • And to that I say...I love the Ruttles, the Beatles are like an alternative universe!

  • so... go back to your universe =S

  • I LOVE THE RUTLES!

  • RUTLES 4 EVER DIRK STIG NASTY BARRY

  • Disagree, Yoko is a babe when in tight shorts.

  • YEAH SHE DID LOOK HOT IN SHORTS

  • I'd like to see Yoko looking Hot...burning at the stake like all witches.

  • godzilla looks good in tight shorts too. what's your point? :)

  • You have been living on the farm too long, the animals are starting to look good to you.And the sheep are getting nervous.I bet even Godzilla is gettig tired of wearing the shorts you got him for Christmas.p.s. how did you get tight shorts on the biggest ape in the world?

  • Godzilla has never been an ape. come to the farm and i'll teach all about animals... it's fun!

  • BETTER THAN THE REAL THING

  • Actually, it is... amazing.

  • random... but true.

  • I am fan of Beatles but this parody is really good:-D:-D

  • you're listening to the genius of Neil Innes. do a search on his name to hear more spoof material from him, not related to the Beatles. i think he stands on his own with his songwriting.

  • me too, and same.

  • maybe yoko will end up suing herself accidentally . I'm sure John would be proud of Yoko licensing his name for brands of ice cream.pfft LOL. The Rutles parody is more realistic than one would think.

  • again, no. that makes approximately zero sense.

  • Even though Heather Mills is a home-wrecking bitch, Yoko is not. She is John's true love and we all need to respect that.

  • Dirk, nasty, stig and barry. The pre-fab four. Timeless.

  • ged back geaux geaux

  • omGGGG..this must be the closest thing to being in a parallel universe...who the heck are these guys???

  • Believe it or not, some band actually released a Rutle tribute album....The guy playing George I believe did some work with the Beach Boys on one of their albums or may have played with them in concert (ca. early '70s).

  • Yeah..Ricky Fataar. Really funny of Eric Idle to cast him as George; Ricky is of Indian origin!

  • Maybe someday they'll do another "mockumentary" and give the Stones the treatment.

They could be The Gathering Moss.

    With such "hits" as:

    "Let's Shag Your Wife Together"

    "As Beers Go Bye Bye"

    "Deep Knee Squat Flash"

    "Let It Scab"

    "Sympathy for the Lawyer"

and "You Can't Always Get Rid of What You Dont Want"

  • on the beatles roof top concert they where pleased when the coppers came because it was on film for the film let it be.they wanted themselfs to be arrested because it would be a good end to the film.but they just asked them to turn the sound down. what a pitty

  • LOL Fleecy37 ... That should be a great performance !!

  • I met Neil Innes at a Beatles convention in Jersey some years ago. My friend unknowingly insulted him by saying The Rutles Archaeology, which Neil graciously autographed, wasn't nearly as good as All You Need Is Cash. Neil looked shoxked and I almost had a cardiac. I apologized to Neil and ripped my friend a new a-hole. Neil is a genius.

  • Wow--that's so messed up! What a jackass. And yes, Neil is definitely a genius!

  • WOw~ You're soooo lucky!'

    What was he like?

Yes, your friend deserves to have a large spike thrust up his-=-

  • Neil was so soft spoken and polite. He was genuinely happy to sign our ARCHAEOLOGY cd's. and appreciatuve. I was just about to ask him So many questions about his fav equipment, etc. being a musician myself, and how he recorded the Rutles music. I was DYING to know. Then, my friend madde his remark and I wanted to die. I told Neil I loved Archaeology, apologized, and he smiled like it was alright.

  • Was Neil shocked...and stunned......shocked......and stunned.....?

  • No, actually, he turned white and didn't know what to say. That was really awkward.

Well, then, yes. He was shocked... and very stunned...

  • Haha! I like that Eric idle is singing, but that's clearly Neil Innes's voice :-P I'm such a geek...

  • Actually, Ollie Halsall (now deceased) sang all the Dirk (Eric Idle) parts. He only briefly appears in the film as "Leppo", the fifth Rutle that remains in Hamburg.

He does a great McCartney imitation, which isn't easy to do!

  • Aww, thanks for the info :3 Finally a comment worth reading!

  • this is pretty clever. his Paul voice immitation is excellent. Being a huge Beatles fan for years, it's funny. I've never seen the Rutles

  • my 8 year old bro is singin this for the talent show! lol

  • Two things: one Where they really playing there instruments? and second: McCartney might of sewed them because this song almost the same to Get Back, but he didn't.

  • 1 - no they weren't all playing but some are singing and I think the drummer is playing

    2 - I don't know.

  • He SHOULD"VE sewed!!

  • I've heard Neil Innnes in interviews saying that they ended up losing the royalties to practically all the Rutles songs.

  • Seriously? Now that's irony for ya!

  • Hey, where's the Billy Preston look-alike?

  • Nasty was right, they were definitely bigger than Rod!

  • its 5 drum,not 4 drum kit

  • I like the man screaming.

  • ajajajjajajaja

  • i know nasty wrote a alot of songs in this movie. He and lennon would have made a gr8 song writing pair..possible better than paul/john(only if u prefer lennon over mccartney).id rather hear more of lennon's catchy melodies than let it be, long and winding road, helter skelter...

  • Eh...More people preferred McCartney's ballads. That is why he was much more succesful in the ten years after The Beatles than John.

  • Yeah, Neil Innes; that guy's a genius. Wrote a lot of stuff for Monty Python. Some of his tunes are as magical as the Beatles'. That's some talent.

  • BTW, way to keep the footage of the cops taking them away. That's the best part, man!

Additonal Trivia Bit: That's what the Beatles actually hoped would happen for the sake of the movie Let It Be. When they showed up, they just politely told them they had to stop.

  • This is actually the closest The Rutles ever got to a lawsuit, according to the other Beatles.

  • Just on a side note, it was actually John who was doing the solos on this one.

  • that is on "Get Back" by the Beatles

  • What, isn't this a parody of "get back" which paul sung??

  • of course it is, can't you hear it?

  • I LOVE WHEN HE KICKS HIM IN THE ASS :o)

  • Innes is fantastically talented. thoroughly advise checking out the whole film, which has to be the best satire/parody of the Beatles ever.

  • Check out George's old video to "Crackerbox Palace". At the beginning you can see "Ron Nasty" (Neil Innes) dressed like a nanny pushing George in a baby carrage!

  • its a parody, dude

  • boy, you guys sure know how to spot sarcasm from a mile away.

  • But, It's just to real...

  • Love the attention to detail...pure genius.

  • John Lennon warned Neil Innes that Paul McCartney would claim copyright infringment since the melody is almost the same as Get Back. McCartney DID, but settled for having "Lennon/McCartney" added to the official credited writers of Get Up And Go.

  • I think you'll find that's comic and musical genius Mr Rickenbacker!

  • This is comic genius at its best! The Rutles forever! Rock on mates!

  • Does anyone know if the guy who playes George (i think its Stig o Hara)really plays the guitar, I've watched the film a few times and it looks like he is.

  • Yes. That's Rikki Fataar. (I think that's how it's spelled anyway.) He's been around for decades and played on the Beach Boys' "Holland" album.

  • Thanks for clearing that up, I was fairly sure he must be a real musician, the others 'fake' really well but he looked genuine. Happy Christmas Rutles Fans!!!

  • Actually, the only one not actually playing on the recordings is Eric Idle. He does play guitar, but can't play lefty bass. I have the original album. Ollie Halsey does the Dirk/Eric parts. The rest of the band performs all their own parts.

  • lol, aweasome!

the man falling at the beggining - lol

  • The Beatles' music is so classic, even when a bunch of comedians perform parodies of the music it sounds good.

  • it actually kind looks like them

  • I laughed my ass off when the guy at the beginning was kicked off the roof. LOL

  • To quote Master Thespian...they are only ACTING!

I love this movie. What a great spoof. George Harrison was even in this movie. Isn't it produced by Lorne Michaels? (SNL)

  • yeah it is. See how many SNL cast members are in the movie.

  • I agree...

  • Gee, people really don't understand the rutles.. They are NOT trying to be the beatles!! but then I think you have to be a real beatle fan to understand All the humor.

  • This is what I've been trying to tell everybody!

    Thank you!

  • Their not even trying. They practically are the beatles. Even most of the Beatles thought that they did a good job at being the beatles.

  • It's a parody, silly.
