  • bcakapinky, that airhorn is from 4449. When back in regular service in the 1940s and the 1950s, 4449 uses an airhorn at dense fog and grade/level crossings while the whistle is for everything else

  • I can't tell where that diesel horn blare was coming from. Could it have been 4449 or the Amtrak diesel?

  • I remember something just like this. I went there with my family and we all saw the engine arrive at the station. We didn't get to ride on it, but it was fun taking pictures of the train. I think it was SO cool. Does anybody know when there'll be another steam engine passing through Naperville again this year?

  • From 30 seconds to 50 seconds - rare use of the air horn :)

4449 is one of a few steam engines that were equipped with both a whistle and a horn. The horn was used more often because the SP had "sound-activated" crossing gates that wouldn't work with the whistle.

Doyle McCormack, CMO / Engineer of 4449 prefers to use the whistle more often :)

  • cool thanks for sharing that with us.If I would have known it was coming through I would have took my 2 and a half year old son to see he loves trains.

  • Looks like big crowds coming out to see her in the Chicago area-cool!!

  • I'm afraid I know very little about trains, so I can't comment much on it. But I can say that it's absolutely beautiful.
