Why are they going to destroy it?

Can't they just let their garbage and waste burn up in the atmosphere without sending it this container?

I know it will have served it's purpose but it shouldn't be wasted. Leave it docked so they have an extra room... They can always un-dock it later, and dock it again...

Just seems silly to waste a space container that could at worst, be an emergency escape for space station habitants.

This very vehicle can't, but modifications which include a reentry shield and a escape section would make it able to carry astronauts!

it's cheaper for the jules verne to destroy itself on reentry than it is to design your "modifications" for it. if it was changed to a reentry vehicle, it'd no longer be the jules verne as the neccessary specifications for a reentry vehicle would force a resdesign of the entire project altogether- including asthetics. the jules verne is just a crude first step in cheaper and more efficient earth-orbit vehicles.

It doesn't really need to carry astronauts though. There's still the Soyuz.. I don't think the Soyuz is going any where. :)

They plan to modify the whole design for manned flight in the upcoming years. Since 2010, the ATVs are supposed to start regular flights, with the manned version picking on later, say... 2015 (optimistically speaking)...
