Per ritrovare questo disco, anni fa, e regalarlo ad un argentino.... ho fatto i salti mortali .....ma altro che Angel.....!!!!!!!!!! Un enorme....berp!
I remember this kind of weird-looking little dude. He used to do the Carson show a lot , and he had written a bunch of hit songs for other people. But , this one song just blew me away. I just remember that line "So , good night . I'll take my memories to bed..." That's not really anything that profound poetically or anything . What I mean is that line has been stuck in my head for nearly forty years. It was the only part of the song I remembered. Thanks for filling out the rest of it.
Paul Williams is the best songwriter ever. He has a way of looking into your heart and putting it to words. I've been a fan since he sang We've Only Just Begun" for Crocker Bank commercials. So much talent and so taken for granted.
Thank you ,Paul, for the most beautiful and most meaningful songs...I have ever heard ! And for the person who said he is an "ugly man " ? You are so wrong....this is a beautiful man...( the most beautiful person ....ever and most talented ) who wrote the greatest songs of my life and yours, too . Have some respect !!!
I have this original album. "Old Fashioned Love Song",which by the way he also wrote. He wrote many other hits for others. He's probably one of the 70's most understated songwriters. The whole album is acoustic. How I long for those days again......
@cryslovesmusic I would have to agree with you there I played this Album for a Woman after knowing her for maybe a week, we spent the next 15 years together and had two beutifull kids, and allthough she would never admit it I am sure this album influenced her enormously in her Initial impressions of me and I must admit that was probably my intention lol!! Drew
This is indeed hauntingly beautiful. I remember growing up and singing along to this song without knowing or understanding the lyrics. Now that I do, it painfully reminds me of how things used to be. "I could get back to the place but not the time" -- ouch!! I guess I'll just have to take my memories to bed and hope that I wake up alone...
This is one of my favorite songs of all times - yes, I actually owned all of Paul Williams' albums! I saw him on Jimmy Fallon last night (6/15/11) and it brought back all of these old memories. I also loved "Lucky Old Sun"...I love his writing but I also love his voice during these days of old! Thanks for sharing this with us!
Oh Em Gee! I love this song, I have this album. It's so nice to see other Paul Williams fans around still. Has anyone got a good version of Loneliness uploaded on youtube yet? One of the greats.
This is vastly superior to the version that was contained on his album. I recall this from my college days and had quite forgotten about it. Thanks for posting it.
Paul Williams in the late 60s and 70s was on tv also alot johnny carson show, muppet show etc. etc. also in alot of movies ,one of the best song writers of all times . when my family new he was going to be on Johnny Carson or any tv show we all would look forward to seeing him. He is funny and a beautiful Personality. Thank Paul. Drohegda
Hey, Mr. Trashcan, we are not talking about the same song. I bought the vinyl which my father had so many years ago. This is all acoustic. There is absolutely no disco-rock processing going on the song which I mentioned on an earlier post. Anyways, I will upload it and let you know when I do.
@kir3txsbcglobalnet I know the version you're talking about. I have the 45. I think it's awful, but maybe that's because I grew up knowing the original version. And I love disco music, but I think his disco version was a feeble attempt to revive the song which, in it's mellower version (the one I posted), only charted at #60. The disco version didn't chart at all--and I never heard it played on the same stations that played the original--not surprising.
@kir3txsbcglobalnet I think that I'm agreeing with you. I first heard this song on Williams' vinyl album "Classics" and I like that version of this song better. I wouldn't call it disco, but it's more "upbeat" and that's why I like that version better. I've just never been able to find it on YouTube.
@kir3txsbcglobalnet There was TWO versions of this song, this one and another that is not disco, but a wee faster. I used to have it and I can't find it again which upsets me. It is a rarity!
@nessadavis71 After years of searching, I found the album (in excellent condition) at a local bookstore. It has a white cover with Paul's face on it. I"ll upload the song soon.
@kir3txsbcglobalnet I agree with you there, but on the upside of things he did the voice of the Penguin for the Batman Anime Series during the 90's. No serious he did go figure lol one of my few favorite villains :P Awesome guy to Paul
I had to check all of the comments to make sure I wasn't repeating myself. The jackass who didn't like this song should have his eardrums poked out.
On a lighter note...I met Paul in August 2005 when he played at the Suncoast Hotel an Casino in Las Vegas. A LOVELY man!!! I also met his children Cole and Sarah and his wife. You could not ask for nicer people.
I've listed to Paul since he was writing jingles in the '60s. I will always be a fan.
Theres another song Paul did , wish i could find it on here, Lyrics go something like.
"Gone forever, gone but not forgotten, how could I forget the likes of you, Just the thought of you makes imaginations fly, just to think of you almost makes me cry."
I first heard this song when I was a little lad, Then it haunted my dreams, the song was in the back of my mind all the time. The first song to ever do that. As I got older I wanted to buy the record. All I could remember was the lyric "Walk with me softy where the wheat fields used to be" the melody still haunting .
My older sister told me it was Paul Williams. I bought the 8 track and became a fan. Incredibly passionate writting .
He is such an underrated influence on the 70's music scene. Look @ his catalog of songs. This is his crown jewel & it is sad it never scored higher. I have the original single & the album. I just picked up a cd of his hits & the upbeat version of this song is on it. Too bad they didn't use this version.
@dmm3295 It's mind-boggling. I've heard him interviewed about his songwriting through the years, and "Waking Up Alone," his only charted hit, was never even mentioned.
Paul re-recorded this song on a later album (White cover with an in-laid picture of Mr Williams). It was a faster version with drums, bass, and electric guitar in the background. That was when I heard the song and God was it awesome. Since then, I haven't found it on the net and the original vinyl is no longer in my hands. It's not that I don't like this mellower version...but I just want to re-experience the song I heard in the 70s.
@kir3txsbcglobalnet I never knew of the later version until I picked up the 45 perhaps ten years ago. It seemed to me to be a feeble effort to revive the song with a disco beat. The arrangement doesn't even reflect the emotion or subject matter of the song. You are entitled to your opinion, however you will not see that version on my channel.
@MrTrashcan1 The rhythmic structure and harmonics of many 70s albums are beyond the musical understanding of younger listeners such as yourself. Continue to listen and study and you will begin to understand.
@kir3txsbcglobalnet I'm ten years older than you. I am familiar with the earlier version because I heard it first hand when it was first played. My interests are with both classical and oldies pop and if you peruse my channel you will realize my appreciation for '70s music. This version dates from 1972. I also loved disco music. But when you run this beautiful ballad through a disco/rock processor, the result is, in my opinion, an embarrassment which I'm sure Paul was happy to forget.
Brilliant songwriter, Paul Williams & love this song, always have since the early 70's. Wish I could find him on youtube singing "The Rose" from his Life Goes On album.

Hearing this song now touches my heart the same way it did the first time I heard it on the radio many years ago -I didn't know the name of the song or even the name of the artist. From the very first notes played by the piano, it gets to my heart and the lyrics -so nostalgic and heartbreakingly beautiful. Emotion reminds us we are alive. Thank you for posting.
We were coming home tonight and I heard his name. I ran in to hear this, I forgot how much I loved and still love this song. Thanks so much for posting it. God Bless You. Brings bad some good old memories of my younger days. Good times and bad, but life is a journey and I am grateful for the gift of music like this to enjoy. Have a great day.
Though there's no mention of it on his Wikipedia page, I though he was a guest star (playing himself) on "Here's Lucy. He was so odd looking back then, like a troll doll; it's hard to believe how normal he looks in the later pictures. The accent is also a little peculiar for an American; I used to think he was Irish or something. Brilliant songwriter though; this record didn't get as far as it should have.
this man is a master - i love all his music. i hope he comes to ireland again - i'd pay anything and i mean anything to see him live. love you paul...
One of the most unheralded songwriters of our time.I get a Jimmy Webb vibe from this guy.Soulful romantic stuff.Heartbreaking.Thanks for digging this out Mr Trashcan.
Thank you. Believe it or not, he did record it again about 4 or 5 years later in a disco format--I guess trying to resurrect it and see if it could do better. I don't know whose idea it was, but it was awful, completely opposite of the spirit of the song, and, of course, didn't even chart.
@MrTrashcan1 i believe i am familiar with the recording and although it isn't as slow and beautiful as this one, it still moves me to tears lol mostly cos it sounds like a desperate struggle to move on, whereas this version sounds like the emotion has already devoured him
man i tell ya what, my mother turned me on to this song many years ago, i still love it! it makes me cry every time. i'm on my way to re-hab, & i know that i'll be waking up alone!!!
Actually no, although I respect him for his wonderful music. Those pictures in the video are from the internet, not my collection. I think I own a few of his albums and the 45 of this song. I am a beautiful music die-hard, and this is one of the most beautiful that I remember hearing played on the air when I was growing up. Thank you for the kind comment.
Thanks for posting. This has always been one of my all-time favorite songs. Everytime I listen to this awesome song, I think about the legendary girl I left "behind". I'm thinking about you right now, LuAnn! Also, Google his name and you'll be surprised regarding his life and accomplishments - simply amazing!
i'am 31 my Girl friend is 22 we have been together 7 years. Since she was 15 she has loved this song paul.
Paul honestly if you read this, she loves this song. it makes her so happy! just to see her smile to it and listen to it makes me heart melt. you can thank my parents for me hearing it. and her
Anita, Paul is doing great. I don't know him personally, but I heard from a friend of his several months ago on another video blog. He still likes to hear from fans.
He was a master of sentimentality and wildly underrated. This was one of his best songs.

yes this version is better, thank you for posting!

@MrTrashcan1 i believe i am familiar with the recording and although it isn't as slow and beautiful as this one, it still moves me to tears lol mostly cos it sounds like a desperate struggle to move on, whereas this version sounds like the emotion has already devoured him

To MrTrashcan 1: thanks posting Paul's songs...I guess you're a Paul Williams die-hard like me.
