Jim is totally wrong. His friends went out of business because they used terrible money management for their accounts. They probably put 80% - 150% of their portfolio in one short and tried to "Make a Killing." Shorting stocks is the best you just have to use say 5% of your totally portfolio per position. As for options. They are a waste. A lot of times even if the stock goes down the put price dont move. It even goes up. The bid ask spread rips you off also. Options are a scam!
