I believe he's right, massive objects block the omnidirectional pushing force but if two massive objects are close to each other they will block a significant part of the push in one direction to the other, so it seems there's an attractive force, nevertheless it's just the blocking of the push in one direction... the closer they get the more they block each other. It makes sense.
