I'm American and I understood most of what they were saying after the second time watching it. It's no shit Americans have trouble understanding a dialect they almost never come across in day to day life. Whereas if you are living in the U.K., it is far more likely to come in contact with a cockney accent. Common sense. I went to the Balt island off the cost of Maryland and Had trouble understanding people because it was so vastly different to what I was used to.

@efcdk92 Not all of them do. Just the ones that aren't familiar with British films. There's plenty of yanks that do get the accent. But even English have trouble with other English accents. A girl from London was telling me she moved north and thought someone was foreign but she just had a heavy manc accent. She also got compliments on her elegan accent too. Snl just goes for the cheap shots and even yanks complain about the comedy timing of their sketches not being very funny.
