Thank you TuomasL81 -- it does seem to be Maestro Erede, I found a photo of him from the Bayreuth Festival to check. I have been trying to find this out for more than a year -- thank you thank you!
¡Qué joya! Muchísimas gracias para compartir. I must tell that I am still more and more impressed with Maestro Kraus. And thank you for making me discover Barry McDaniel.
Perfectly balanced. I love this duet and Kraus-McDaniel is the better sound I ever heard. I don't like very much the french diction of Kraus, but what a technique!
McDaniel is gorgeous.
Perfettamente bilanciati. Amo questo duetto e quello di Krau-McDaniel è vocalmente il più bello che abbia mai sentito. Kraus è sempre un maestro di tecnica anche se qui trovo la sua pronuncia francese un po' troppo secca.
The surprise for me has been MacDaniels, a very unjustifiedly forgotten spectacular artist. Kraus, as always tehncically perfect, but the ugly voice had no remedy.
Kraus sang this with sensitivity, pure clarity and McDaniel with power, yet when they are in tandem the are perfectly balanced and I can hear both voices evenly, so Kraus can certainly crank it up when he wants to. Both are wonderful, a great recording. And the emotional passages at the end show both at their peak. Superb artistry.
Oh my god,,,......BRAVO BRAVO BRAVO y BRAVO to Barry McDaniel. Opera world need a lot this type of voice.....Bravo Maestro. In thos performance Mr.McDaniel ist singing more bether than A. Kraus...
Barry McDaniel is indeed a discovery. Gorgeous color, musical sound, and good match for Kraus. And handsome to boot. I would love to hear more of his work.
This is exquisite! Perhaps the greatest if not one of the greatest tenor/baritone duets of all times. I still love best the Gedda/Blanc recording with the wondrous Cluytens conducting. However this is a fabulous recording. Kraus is his usual magnificent - but I had never heard McDaniel before - but he is truly a find!! BRAVI!! Thanks so for this posting!
I have known Barry McDaniel since 1972. He was at his very best at that time. His role as Papageno in The Magic Flute was stellar for many years as a principle with the Berlin Deutsche Oper. He is retired, living in Berlin, 79 years old...a wonderfully talented, kind individual, whose friendship I will always cherish. Underated? ABSOLUTELY! I too wish someone could bring him more into the public eye and ear.
I knew Barry McDaniel from his TV appearances in the 1970s and rediscovered him about three years ago. One of the loveliest lyrical baritone voices voices of all times, and one of the great performers of art song in the 1960s and 70s. He is an extraordinary combination of intensity, emotional clarity and impeccable elegance - imagine a missing link between Hermann Prey and Gérard Souzay.
Quite a few of his song recordings are available in YouTube - check them out.
This is a beutiful rendition. I do however find Nicolai Gedda and Ernest Blanc the definitive reocrding. This performance with Kraus and McDaniel is my second favourite!
I agree with you completely!! Gedda and Blanc are just phenomenal. I still think that Blanc was one of the most under-rated baritones of the20th Century. He was in the Angel records "stable" - and sang everything they needed. His Valentin in Faust with Gedda and de los Angeles is also gorgeous.
I love this duet because it's soooooooo gay! Two men, with such a romantic music.... and the plot!!! the two of them, fascinated by the godess, but at the end.... their "love" (call it friendship or whatever) is stronger... and they remain together... mmmmm
Alfredo Kraus has the smoothest, sweetest tenor, with a completely elegant delivery. This is my favorite duet of all time--the ways the lines play off each other is unparalleled in sweetness. This version is nothing short of sublime.
Does anyone know if this an audio recording of this is available to buy? The ones on itunes only feature the Kraus/Taddei version, but I love this duet between Kraus and McDaniel. My absolute favourite. Any ideas?
I am a casual opera fan (a musician, but by no means an opera expert). After seeing this video and the other Pearl Fishers aria by Kraus on youtube, Kraus is now without a doubt on my top list of favorite tenors!!! Such effortlessness and beautiful ringing in the top range!
He escuhado todas las versiones de este dueto que hay en Youtube, y sin desmerecer a algunas de las mejores, creo que esta es la mejor de todas, la mejor medida, la de voces más bonitas y mejor sonido de orquesta.
Pavarotti never had the emotion and finesse of Kraus. The only tenors of the last fifty years that came close were Domingo, Bergonzi and, of course, Jussi Bjoerling! Kraus is the most underated tenor of all time. It was a privilege to see him sing Werther in San Francisco many years ago. Then I bumped into him at Auberge du Soleil the next night. He was most gracious! A true gentleman.

I agree dear.. he wa SO good when he was younger.but he was a lousy actor...but cute..I adore him even though as an actor he is clutzy....he has given me great delight in Faust!!..my favorite opera..kiss
Kraus' portrayal of the mentally unstable, morbid, masochistic, and manipulative character of Werther in Massenet's opera has been acclaimed as one of the most insightful performances of this part EVER.
Besides, out of stage-dress he was the most elegant male presence that ever graced a stage, concert hall or studio.
But YOU think he is "a lousy actor" and - of all things - "clutzy", *DEAR*!
KERRRR-IST!!! God save us from "experts" like that.
I don't really care whether a great tenor can act on stage. As long as their voices do. But I agree with you! Clutzy and Kraus should never be uttered in the same sentence. He was elegant, and a polished performer. I only saw him in Werther and Faust and no tenor came close, in my never humble opinion. This performance demonstrates the beauty and emotion behind his extraordinary voice.
Extraordinario.
Lucky you!!You can tell your friends and family that you met a wonderful tenor. It's going to be one of the highlights in your life....congratulations!!!
And I take that back. After listening to the recording with Bergonzi and Fischer-Dieskau again, I have to admit that McDaniel IS at least as good as Fischer Dieskau here, maybe better.
And here was I, thinking that nobody could beat Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau and Carlo Bergonzi, but Alfredo Kraus is so awesome that he makes one forget that McDaniel can not quite touch Fischer-Dieskau and that Bergonzi is one of the all time great tenors as well. What effortlessness, what style, what poise!
Pavarotti wasn't the greatest voice ever but he had the best technique and was the best tennor ever. In complete control of the ego all the way.. Even Kraus got caught by it every now and then. This performance is flawless however.
ah ah ah! not the best technique! pavarotti ha some performances where his voice breaks, not like alfredo kraus.. dont tell me that hijo.. youre too wrong!!
if the maestro was still alive, he should have had the title of the world's greatest tenor.. no offense with pavarotti, both of them were great but as ive said, maestro alfredo kraus is greater than greatest!!
Electrifying ! What a class in both singers ! A version that equals the best french ones by Vanzo/Bacquier and Simoneau/Vanzo. Only Kraus's french is sometimes odd.
OUTSTANDING performance!!! Kraus and McDaniel are well-matched vocally and know what they are singing, and Ansermet's conducting is equally outstanding!!!
This is now one of my favorite performances of this duet, along with Bjoerling/Merrill, Gedda/Blanc, Domingo/Milnes, Kraus/Bruscantini, and (from the "pirates") Gedda/Bruson. Thank you VERY much for posting this!!!
Yes, they are all good: and don't forget three very great 'golden age' acoustic recordings of the duet: Edmond Clement and Marcel Journet, John McCormack and Mario Sammarco and Caruso with either Ancona or Amato.

I have Bjoerling and Merrill singing this, as well as Aler and Quilico. Both are fine renditions, but neither suits me as well as this.
I've listened to other renditions, too, but I have never heard any rendition that suits me quite this well.
Kraus and Terfel have harmony, timing and voices to equal the best of any singers, and they have it all on one recording.
Where can I buy a copy, please?
After all, this the very top!!!
