in this video, I can see that you dont puff "properly", meaning, you don't take long slow draws vs. the short hot puffing yer doin' in the video, lol. No smoking is "safe" smoking, but I think a cigarette smoker will get cancer from their habit before a pipe smoker gets it from their "hobby". Enjoy it your way!

@sweetness00peace You inhale small particles of allsorts ALL THE TIME! So unless you walk around with a filtermask all the time youll take in some. The majority of the negative health effect of ciggys is the fact you are inhaling red hot tar laden smoke direct into the lungs. As mentioned you only puff into the mouth where nicotine is absorbed by the gums. Also the pipe cools the smoke so you dont cook the mouth. There is a risk, but it is exponentially smaller than smoking cigarettes.

In answer to your tongue bite concern, some blends will bite your tongue no matter how slow you smoke. Its a body chemistry thing. Not all tobaccos agree with your tongue. Also, as far as lighting goes, I have used a candle lighter in a pinch when theres nothing else around. And technique? Try taking fewer, longer puffs. A good rule is that your pipe should always be on the verge of going out. Also, tamp every 9-12 puffs. This has the same effect as lighting. Hope that helps!

Everybody has a learning curve when smoking a pipe. Don't listen to anyone who doesn't smoke a pipe. Your best bet is to find a GOOD tobacco shop not some Quickie mart. Find an older guy there, that smokes a pipe and learn from him. BUT there are a lot of places that have sprung up that sell cigars AND carry a few pipes They know less about pipe smoking than you do. A good BOOK to read is Richard Carlton Hacker's book "The Ultimate Pipe Smoker".Get it at the library or Amazon. Good Luck

hey my friend.. im sure this video is too old.. but you have packed the bowl too tightly.. and your smoking too quickly..

let the bowl go out. you should taste a nut like flovour.. when your mouth has cooled down a little try takin a puff from your pipe. if after 1 or 2 draws you get no smoke you would want to relight the pipe.

the afore mentioned it just a good way to start smoking.. it allows you to get into good habits.

Begin with a finer kind of tabaco that will burn better,especially when youre a beginner like youreself .Packing goes in about three steps. you pack the fist layer loosely. the secend a bit firmer and the last one a bit tighter. than light your pipe, spread the ashes and light it again.

Let me assure you that there is not a real pipe smoker who would consider packing a briar pipe with any substance different than tobacco. I've been smoking a tobacco pipe for a few months now. I stopped for a little while. But due to recent stresses in life, I've started smoking again. I forgot how amazing it is for my stress. It needs to be brought back in style.

I am much more calm and level headed when smoking a nightly bowl. And studies, outdated as they may be, have shown that pipe smokers actually lived longer than non-pipe smokers. Due to relived stress they believed.

Im a fan of Captain Black: Royal as my pipe tobacco. If you tamp the tobacco down well it wont go out easily and you wont have to relight it so often. You can get a pipe tamper / cleaner from a Tobacconist for around $2 to $5. They are well worth having. BTW your family seams wonderful. ^_^

That was a pretty funny video. I am also a young (22) college student pipe smoker I just started in the fall of last year and also smoke only about 3 times a month. A tip to reduce tongue bite, sometimes the tobacco is to moist if that's the case try letting it sit out for 15 minutes to 1 hour before you pack the bowl. One way I learned to test the moisture level is to pinch a small amount of tobacco between your fingers then drop it, if it stays in a clump it is too moist.

It's basically 4 things: the quality of your pipe (get the best you can afford - many reputable makers out there), the quality of your tobacco (this also includes the proper amount of moisture!), the way you fill & tamp, and the pace of your puffing.

I agree that more women should consider pipes. Better quality and more attractive than sucking on foul cigarettes.

I too am an aspiring pipe smoker, and have done some research on the subject of correct pipe packing: search youtube for the frank method and the 3 pack method. they seem to be the main types of loose tobacco packing. packing correctly will prevent the pipe from going out often as well. And you're wrong about women smoking cigarettes, its not sexy at all, but a pipe on the other hand has a whole different atmosphere to it. It portrays elegance, style and creates an awesome aroma

This is my only pipe, a cherrywood Stanwell that my father gave me. I currently live in a state where you must be 19 to buy tobacco (I am 18) so I haven't had the opportunity to try much, aside from cherry Captain Black and vanilla Admiral's Choice. My pipe is the only thing I smoke regularly... I'm not too anxious to inhale anything but I would try a hookah or other methods of smoking. I've tried cigarettes and kreteks and that's about it.
