I was confused in regards to how promoted video appear on home page: Is it selected by Youtube admins because it's worth viewing or is it an option bought by individuals to advertise? If it is the former I didn't particularly find this video worth promoting.

Some people use Twitter or Facebook as means to connect with old friends that would be hard to find otherwise. Some of us are older than 25 (I'm 29) and have friends that we haven't seen since like 1993. It's not easy to contact them

It's not just "letting people know what ur doing"...it's a very massive conversation that consists of all different types of discussions and "tweets". I've found lots of useful new sites, books, music and videos from people tweeting about them, as well as added to my Facebook network. I've even seen some people find jobs and other kinds of help there. I think you should give it more thought than a simplistic denial.
