I saw steps last friday at the Iridium in NTC, it was their 30 year special edition get together with Mainieri, Stern, Smith, Mccaslin, and a bass player whose name I don't recall. It was a small venue but they were quite good.
Steve played after Pete left which I think was around the late eighties. Either way, I agree, they both kick ass but in my opinion Pete's style was a slightly better fit for Step's sound.
I think the title "Beirut" is appropriate. As an ex-marine this tune reminds me of urban combat in some bombed-out, Third-World city like Beirut,Bagdad,Sarejevo,or Mogadishu.
It has been ages since I first heard Steps Ahead and it immediately caght my attention as one of the most innovative, yet audible(!) bands of the 80s. I have their live CD released in 1986, but I had never seen this clip: is this part of a commercially available DVD?? Picture and sound are just perfect!
Oh yeah. This instrument first came out in the 1970's and was known as the Lyricon (listen to Steely Dan's "Peg" to hear Tom Scott playing the lyricon). This instrument is alleged to be the inspiration for the "Kloo horns" played by the Cantina Band in Star Wars!
I love that tune. My percussion prof in college back then transcribed Mainieri's vibe solo in Beirut and I remember learning it note for note. Good times. That same year Brecker did a clinic at a nearby community college, and we were all totally floored by the whole EWI thing. Steve Smith did a clinic later that year and I helped him schlep his Sonors around. They were both super nice guys and totally approachable.
Thx for share

@TheDuskVoid No need for Vinnie to take the driver's seat on this. S.S. pulls it off just fine.
