Her performance was excellent but I think she was miscast in The Deerhunter. She is far too patrician and WASP-looking. No way could she ever look like she was a working-class young woman from a shitty steel town who worked in the shitty local supermarket. And even back then in her early 20's she had the air of staid middle-age about her. I think her casting had everything to do with the fact that John Casale needed her on set and Cimino just checked her out to be sure she could actually act.
The Deer Hunter is the best war movie. All the actors did a stunning job. It's amazing, and so real. Yeah, the criticize it, but that's because it's based on what's real. And people tend to not take that.
@Marty01Mcfly i know! i don't quite get that, though. was he a producer? or did he already have the glorious reputation he still has and so producers trusted him enough to go scouting for actors? woah!
Meryl Streep was so incredibly beautiful in The Deer Hunter. As a young man of twenty-years I never understood why older men were enamored with her, until I saw The Deer Hunter. I'll likely never look back. Beautiful woman, brilliant actress, great beacon of humanity.
@CSImiamiLOVER01 There is an interview on youtube: "Meryl Streep Inside the Actor's Studio Pt 2" (the 9:00 minute clip) where she (very briefly) mentions John Cazale by name at around the 7:00 minute mark.
@smichelle65 well thank you very much ill it really helped thxx and also i found john was mentioned during meryls' AFI lifetime achievement award while "jimmy" was giving a speech about her but his real name was James Woods
@XxlovemerylstreepxX I agree: it was tragic that Cazale died (he was only 48) without ever seeing "The Deer Hunter" reach success. I read that when Cimino and Lucas approached him on the movie, he initially declined. He was already dying and felt he would be a burden to everyone involved in the film. Thankfully, he changed his mind and did a great job.
@EyesOfTheSouthSTi They have the Sheens in them. They're in Vietnam. They're about the horrors of war. They both have long internal narrative sections. They both feature a main antagonist character who's completely given in to the evil of war. Need I go on?
@aprilwearsgucci Hey. I agreethat the DH was a GREAT movie!!! However i dont eventhink it is nescessarilya WAR movie. As far as Vietnam it is not even the best flick. Hunter is a story of a bunch of friends and families -yes-torn-by the war,but more about the relationships of the characters.WW2 movies from the old times were crap, RYAN ,was so real that it sucks you into the beast(have you been in the suck?) And Platoon is Nams SOP ,for leg unit. Charlie Rangers-RLTW- C.Co.75th inf. Division
@aprilwearsgucci - I believe that too was my favorite war story. I believe she said when asked how she came about the character in Deer Hunter. She said she played that character "with almost a tear
in her eye" What a wonderful performance she gave. She said she knew that character very well. I wonder if she wasn't playing herself because John Cazale was dying of cancer.. If she did played herself she is incredible human being.

Agree with krakenwave Streep was always too regal and elegant to be the working-class loser girl in a proley steel-town.

It makes me feel so sad when I think that he died of bone cancer. It says on wiki; Streep nursed him on his death bed.
I hate seeing stuff like that. I admire her so much!

I so agree with you. Just love her and think she is beautiful, as well as being a phenomenal actress obviously..lol!
SHRINA17 2 years ago 23
@aprilwearsgucci I think you're heavily mistaken on it being the best war movie ever. Apocalypse Now trumps it every time.
Lazarus171 1 year ago
@Lazarus171 two different types of movies. Apocalypse Now is good, but Platoon is better.
EyesOfTheSouthSTi 1 year ago
@EyesOfTheSouthSTi Platoon is practically a remake of Apocalypse Now. It is better than Deer Hunter though.
Lazarus171 1 year ago
@Lazarus171 hahaha not even close to the same movie you moron.

@Lazarus171 Both two different stories dumb ass haha.
EyesOfTheSouthSTi 1 year ago
@EyesOfTheSouthSTi Well yeah they're not the EXACT same movie. They have a lot of similarities though.
Lazarus171 1 year ago
@Lazarus171 yes but that does not indicate it to be practically a remake like you stated.
EyesOfTheSouthSTi 1 year ago
@EyesOfTheSouthSTi It's so similar that it's not farfetched to say that.
Lazarus171 1 year ago
@Lazarus171 it is far fetched since you yourself even said the stories are not alike.
