  • that brings back memors, I use to watch it every week when it was on tv.

  • 0:25 - jeez, Chief Chirpa's grown!

  • Brass ensemble in space - it could never happen again

  • @dellarwoowoo That's Edvard Grieg's Norwegian Dance, other Grieg music in the 1980s included a chip tune version of In The Hall Of The Mountain King in Manic Miner.

  • Used to love this. Anyone recall simon groom from blue peter watering the plant and being vapourised? Good enough for him I say.

  • Ahh, memories!

  • Leslie Juddd WHHOOOARRRRRR

    CRUMPET

  • doog yrev

  • Everlikely i got into drugs in the mid nineties.

  • I used to fucking love this... Was grandfather the plant? Or was it uncle?

  • I'd forgotten completely about this show.

  • Classic! Bring it back!

  • Madeline Smith mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm!

  • Comment removed

  • thanks for posting. took me back

  • Is that Geraldine James?

  • I remember thinking that the contestants really did get 'evaporated' by the vortex, and even as an 8-yr-old kid thinking 'I wouldn't risk my life for those poxy prizes!'

  • THEY'VE GOT THE CHINESE DETECTIVE IN THIS!!!!

  • Think she needs a new marker pen!

  • gronda gronda

  • This was an awesome show in its day.

  • She had it comin' to her! xD

  • i don't remember it ever looking as cheesy in my head as it does watching it back after all the years gone by. i use to think it really did take you away somewhere lol

  • There are three things I remember thinking back to this programme now: The sexy voiceof the woman host, people bowing and saying "gronda gronda" to a potted plant and the scary vortex.

  • David Yip!

  • I can see the budget didn't go to SFX LOL

  • @TequilaCT Nah, it went on the birds.

  • @TequilaCT this was actually pretty advanced sfx for its time

  • idiots !

even if they could move forward and didn't see the vortex, they

    could have tried moving forward...

  • i was trying to explain this to my mates recently when i saw a vortex like structure, couldnt remember the name of the program. they thought i was mad. "these people are in space and they get sucked into oblivious by a vortex"

  • I always remember the weather being cold when this was on...

  • Gronda, gronda!! I absolutely loved this show when it was on!! This was my favourite part of the show,as i loved the sound effects of this game.

It would be great to see repeats of this on tv again! =D

  • wasn,t grandad a rubber plant?...maybe everyone should one day have to go against The Vortex..survival of fittest?

  • If they could see where the contestant was going how could they ever lose?

  • @theboygazza Players have to walk onto the vortex - the vortex can't move onto the player's square. Since the player always has 3 or more directions they can go, it's not guaranteed they'll ever end up walking onto the vortex's square

  • used to watch this, fascinated by how they had a version of the kabbalah depicted on a tv gameshow for children

  • Adventure Game was designed by the late Patrick Dowling, also the producer of 'Vision On' with Tony Hart & Pat Keysell

  • Gronda!

  • Me and my sister used to recreate this game on our brown swirly livingroom carpet!

  • I used to find this quite frightening. Sometimes I would have bad dreams about it! Having just watched it again at the age of 34, I think i'll be alright. Hopefully.

  • i never remembered the bit at the end...i thought as a kid they were fully evaporated and it scared the hell out of me!!!!!! Was the most terrifying programme as a child.!!!

So wierd seeing it again.....still kinda scares me..... i agree that the noise and the sight of the vortex still sends shivers down my spine even though i am now 33!!!

  • I fogot how seriously fucked up this program was...lol. Loved it though. The dude who used to talk backwards and the angry plant!

  • Oh No! The Chinese Detective bought it!

  • @rjlamerton - lol "I go first Indy!!!"

He didn't in this game did he the chicken shit! What was it..ladies first?

  • moira stuart was a presenter on this.it was a green cheese roll coz the rangdo only liked things with double vowels in the name

  • that show was the predecessor to 'the crystal maze'

  • thanks so much for uploading this. i loved this so much when i was a kid and i still do.

  • What a brilliant, brilliant show this was. The Vortex terrified me. The idea that people might get zapped into space and then have to walk home ... scary.

  • am i the only one completely confused by this

  • Why are these people so crap at this game?

  • @m00096 omg i know!! i was like what the hell...that was a terrible move

  • May you shuold had call it A view to a vortex as David yip was in a view to a kill

  • who would you like to evaporate name them and why

  • i used to like 'uncle' the talking plant , what a mad show , i had begun to believe i had just made it all up till i saw this clip.

  • @gingerbill128 god i can relate to the statement

  • There is something delightful about the jolly-hockey-sticks style of the female contingent in this clip. Appeals to my inner child a lot!

  • DOOGY REV...

  • ANY ONE REMWMBER THE MOVING BUSH

  • Pure class show. I too found the Vortex and the possibility of falling a bit scary. I was also worried about what might happen if Uncle got REALLY angry!

  • I was petrified of the vortex when I was a kid, hated the sound it made when it moved. All of a sudden I feel 7 years old again!

  • @JohnnyTheWolfLupino ME TOO !!!!

  • @JohnnyTheWolfLupino Me too, I loved the show but I remember getting upset when the Vortex 'zapped' people. Seems so daft no, watching it.

  • What was the pass rate for the challenged on this? I seem to remember about 0%!

  • Sometimes they won a burger which they could throw into the vortex. If it disapeared then they knew the location of the vortex. Thats the skill.

  • i saw that happen in the Challenge repeats once.

someone used their green cheese roll as it was to try and find the vortex, and he found it.

the next player tried some of the argon tokens to identify it, but the vortex didn't take them when it on the correct space.

  • @ooofizzyooo The "burger" was a Green Cheese Roll.

  • then it would be too easy.

  • Loved this show as a kid

  • Classic. Reminds me of Heinz Ravioli.

  • lol look at my name

  • got to love the adventure game. I remember the talking plant (Uncle?) and a talking teapot too :)

Its taken me a while to meet others who remember this and not think I had lost the plot ....."Yeah you know, back in the eighties, talking plant, the vortex...etc etc...(cue confused looks!) But oh, the joy when someone understands!

  • Whenever I see evaporated milk in the supermarket I always have a little chuckle to myself; recalling the moment Keith Chegwin met his doom in the vacuum of space :)

  • Don't think in the six or so years that this ran Cheggers ever made it over the vortex and he was on every other week.

Hmm I wonder if the vortex had the ability to evaporate Keith to the BBC bar?? Maybe that would explain a lot :)

  • Yeah you could be right! :)

  • massive flashback . lol and if i remember right, state of the ART at the time.

  • !DOOGY REV

  • Is that David Yip?

  • The Chinese Detective!

  • Uncle the Aspidistra

  • FUCKIN HELL! what a flashback!

  • Oh I WISH they'd show the repeats of this somewhere......

  • was there a talking pot-plant too? does anyone know??

  • Yea it used to shake and make loud noises....and squirt water I think.

  • sort of like my ex hehehehe

  • yeah. for a while it was also a teapot.

  • oh sort of UN like my ex then hehehehe

  • Don't understand the show but looks very entertaining

  • you're not alone- no-one really understood the show at the time (even the contestants).

  • I used to love this when I was a kid! I used to be a bit scared of it actually, I used to think if I was playing it I might slip and fall off the side of the grid into space and be lost forever... Thank you for posting it!

  • I used to think that too.. And think that people actually got zapped :)

  • Thanks for posting this I really enjoyed this trip back to my youth. I used to love this show, especially this part with at the end with the Vortex. Okay by today's standards it looks a bit creaky but man was it creative and imaginative. Hard to see something like this getting made today

  • i used to love this show, my nan had a carpet with different coloured squares on that i used to imagine i was playing the first game on... she hated it when i shook her plants though!! lol!

  • i loved it too which was your favourite moments when they get it?? do you like beheadings

  • Class!

  • Have you got the full edition of this? This appears to be missing from the BBC archives!

  • @Flickyhecky There are some episodes missing from the BBC ... is this one of them?!?! If only they would repeat it. I loved it.

  • Gronda Gronda !

  • earliest tv memories include this.

  • fab!!!! remember this from my kiddie days, took some finding thankyou.

  • I loved the talking asperdistra plant

  • that chinese man has been in brookside

  • Madeline Smith...COOOOR!

  • Back in the day the BBC were creative...

  • excellent posting

  • This was my favourite part of the show.I liked the bit when they moved straight into the laser beam, and when the beam moved about.

The intro theme is a memorable part of the show too.

  • Was`nt there a plant that talked! Ithink it was the girls grandfather or something! :)Loved this show as a kid

  • Comment removed

  • Yes there was, it was always grumpy!! lol I loved this as a kid to, I thought it was real!!!! haha

  • an aspidistra - the Rangdo of Arg

  • lol better than crystal maze

  • i loved this

  • She can't see the vortex. It is a (early) computer generated graphic. It was totally invisible to the player in the tv studio.

  • ha,ha.

    i remember this show.

the vortex use to scare me!!!!!!!

    hee,hee.

  • LMAO

"Doesn't like it when I go sideways"

    D'oh!

  • Hey - channel five should pick up on this top program - how would todays celebs like Cheryl Cole n Ant and Dec do?!? Bring it back please - ps anyone got any of these on VHS vid particularly 1984- 86? cheer f or top nostalga!

  • this is how i see todays doctor who series, a bit naff.

  • Do you remember that time they had some computer/maths boffin on it? He managed to logically work out how to safely get his two fellow contestants across - then got evaporated himself!

  • I was probably old enough to know better (8 in 1981), but I believed it! At least, I didn't see any reason not to believe it. They were all so serious about the whole thing - Arg IS a planet on the other side of the galaxy, the contestants have NEVER seen the Adventure Game before, they ARE walking home through space!

This innocent child couldn't see any reason for the television people to lie!

  • OAU!!!STUPID!!!!

  • 2:30 BOOM Loved this show.

  • I remember playing our own version of this at lunch time at school. this was such an awesome show.

  • Thanks for posting this. It brings back all those memories of Gnoard and co.

  • Amazing - I remember this from my youth. Amazing how game shows have come on in the past 25 or so years

  • I used to have nightmares about this part of the game!!!

  • channel4 has been around since 1982 thats nearly 30 years lol

  • this was channel 4 not the bbc.

  • It was definitely BBC

  • you're right it was definately BBC not Ch4

  • Channel 4 has only been around just over 20 years. This show was around in the early 1980s

  • Channel 4 started at the end of 1982.

  • Many, many thanks for this. Brought back great nostaligic feelings. Very grateful.

  • True blast from the past! When the BBC was actually very original, bizarre almost!

  • I seem to have a vague recollection that when John Craven got evaporated all that was left behind was a tub of Brylcreme.

  • Whenever ive asked people if they remember this programme...nobody ever does. Thought i'd imagined it!!! Totally loved it as a child and as daft as it sounds now, i did find the vortex a bit scary!!!

  • I remember it, Didnt understand any of it ,too young thought those chips were money people actually used.

  • shit i woulda n never remembered it if yiu asked me the mane... shit fuk me i remember this this now i was 11 when it finished top Quaulity tele

  • ha this is a really early one i remember the ones that had celebrities ie John Craven, and the vortex was controlled by a plant pot or kettle called Gronda. With advice coming from a guy that spoke backwards, Jesus wot were my parents feeding me

  • What was her name - not Lesley Judd, but the other Vortex controller? I was in my teens when this was on and thought her rather nice.

  • Charmian Gradwell.

  • My brother invented a game which was based on this, called the 'duh duh' game (because duh duh was the signal to make another move) which we used to play on the kitchen floor tiles!

  • This was a great programme when the BBC when it from 1980 to 1986, especially when the celebrities of the day were swallowed up by the vortex. It would be great to see the Adevnture Game reserected in a 21st century version and see how clever today's celebrities could use their intelligence to solve the problems and challenges that are put before them.

  • OMG... I remember watching that as a tiny kid and I still have no idea what's going on. They must have been on some strong pills when they drempt that one up.

  • what a blast from the past

  • Was also terrified by the Vortex - can't see why now, but remember quaking behind the sofa almost in tears, hehe. Loved the programme though, and always wanted my own Arg Crystal!

  • Fantastic - seems like only yesterday. Where do you people find these treasures?!

  • Cool! ARG is also an acronym for Alternate Reality Game.....which is kind of what this is.

  • Anyone remember THE GREAT EGG RACE?

  • nice special effects, ahum, ahum!

  • i LOVED this when I was wee - especially the Vortex. Bloody scary tho!!

  • and sarah greene

  • Do you remember the edition where Keith Chegwin got evaporated on the vortex

  • yes oh yes and sarah greene

  • if i were doing the vortex it be earthlings 2 arg 990 65% females

  • mostly the bimbo girls got evapourated

  • The vortex terrified me as a kid. And the fact that they got people to betray one another was pretty screwed up as well. You have to wonder what was going on in the producers' minds!

  • Very Good Programme which was on the BBC From 1980-86 It entertained us kids and was as good as The Crystal Maze. I wish the BBC Would bring it back!!
