The reason it works is because the digitizer didn't crack and get messed up. Basically you just cracked the outer layer of glass on the outside. You can replace the digitizer easily without much trouble.

you only seem to have broken the digitizer, so your screen should be fine unless the glass damaged the screen, easy fix
