That racking is dirt cheap (£100 for single tier five shelves at Machine Mart) we had some callapse under the weight of a shelf of Coke cans That warehouse was a cheapskate! lol
The place I work at uses containers similar to these. Now, admittedly yes, the ones on the bottom probably broke, most likely from a sharp point, high-velocity impact. But I'd be willing to bet that most of those totes are still intact, albeit very smashed up. I've pumped about 200 gallons out of one without the vent cap off. Still airtight afterwards. Kicked it hard as I can. Still intact. Ran into it with a forklift fork. Still intact. Nearly indestructible, and designed that way.
@kickerbooming He was LIGHT? I'm not sure I follow. I think you mean that he was thinking, "I need to get out of this situation". I'm pretty sure he doesn't speak English so I highly doubt he would say the phrase you are implying.
The shelves on the right side had containers with liquid in them, you can see it sloshing around, once that stuff gets moving around it does not stop easily. That certainly helped to bring the shelves down.
Man I know how tje guy feels we had an Easter earthquake and I was inside next to my grandmas glass vaces and me and my cuzin got the hellbout if there and my moms like why didn't you go under the table and we were like we didn't want to die!!
woah tht guy was running for his life lol but i dnt get it how the stuff on the shelves were just shaking a little then boom out of nowhere it just collapsed like wtf.
Hmmm, this raises many important questions, such as; that man who was running, is he still running? as i type this? and do they call him 'the running man'?
@JakeOrion Brooms dont work indoors, as soon as he got out that building you can be sure he mounted that beast and flew off to safety, handy mode of transport imo.
We call it antiseismic bracing for Pallet racking!
We have studied thoroughly with the polytechnich of Athens Greece and have made tests on seismic tables. Call pebro.gr to see how you can brace your pallet racking and avoid collapsing!
I am still surprised that companies still purchase pallet racking in this day and age. There are companies that sell portable stacking racks that would avoid these types of accidents from happening almost altogether. Portable stacking racks should be used in all seismic zones such as California. They are designed to give and take like most new building/bridge codes require. The inspectors and state officials of CA. really need to look into this for everyone's safety
holy shit it looks like the old warehouse i used to work at each pallet @ ~1,000LB-2,800LB and up to 5 shelfs high and man its scary cuz at times u have to run through the isles to get to the exits
I would have ran for my life too. In fact, I live 50 miles from the boarder, in Coachella, CA. and we just had the Easter quake. I ran out of the local Barnes and Noble when a kiosk sign came down. Just about crapped myself.
I work at a warehouse and this makes me think about what could happen if there's an earthquake. The company had a drill not too long ago. They tried to make me the last one that leaves to make sure everyone makes it out..ha..after seeing this..I don't give a shit. I'm running out just like that dude.
Thanks so much for posting this. I often wonder when I'm at IKEA and other warehouse stores like this why they think its safe. In the event of an earthquake, not only would falling pallets kill people, it would maim them in the most horrific manner imaginable.

The title is a lie, the warehouse (which is the building itself) did not collapse, the CONTENTS aka Merchandise or Product if you prefer, collapsed.

The warehouse didn't collapse. One of the pallet racks did. One pallet rack does not equal a warehouse.

Liquid container shouldnt be on rack.. Even if forklifts doesnt hit the lower beams of the rack, tremors may send the racks to collapse too..
Who's idea is that?
