To paint the rock molds I would advise first checking on Woodland Scenics website. If you go to How To videos you will see How to Colour a Rock. At first I was skeptical but they turn out Very nice. This gives the rocks an uneven, weathered look and complements the rock's details.
When you are in first year Science at Universty you are on a budget, luckily I do have enough so I have some space but not a lot for trains anymore.
Your series is great and you will gain many subscribers and views. I can't wait to see the finished product.
I try to scratchbuild what I can, although many others do not. Instead of buying Woodland Scenics hydrocal (expensive to ship and sort of overpriced) I used durabond which dries very solid. I used twigs for pulpwood loads as well.

@ohiosouthern Being on a budget means that it will take longer to build the layout and thus more enjoyment!! Anyway the journey is more important than the destination... I have to be thrifty and creative when using materials. That's one reason I'm starting out in DC. I have the transformers so I don't have to spend for DCC right at first.
