Hi there, I agree that this is a young Greater Spotted. You can tell in this position because the underparts are unstreaked. Great bird though, and if you see a Lesser Spotted at your feeders please post a video!
We've just posted up nearly exactly the same footage thinking it was a Lesser Spotted in our garden based on the markings and the RSPB website.
Interesting comments about the Young Great Spotted.
We've only seen it twice in a non wooded area so very lucky to catch it, and we are in Scotland where the Lesser Spotted apparently are not seen, so this may explain things further?
I don't profess to know much about birds, but based calling it a lesser spotted woodpecker on the distribution of its red colouring. On the greater spotted the red appears to be at the nape of the neck, while on the lesser it is on the crown.
@simonwatkins Young great spotted woodpeckers have a red crown, just like a male lesser spotted. Best way of telling them apart is the white on the back, great spot has two large ovals of white, and lesser has a barred back without the ovals. Still, very nice bird.
