Very emotive clip, one thing that strikes me is that nobody seems to acknowledge the work done by the fireman. I think shoveling up to 12 tons of coal on a moving platform within a few hours is a considerable physical feat. It's worth remembering that on some journeys the fireman actually cleared the tender!
all we have now are nearlly empty rails (whats left) and loads of lego houses where the sheds used to be,all the men having gone up in smoke too in their nearest crematorium after being killed off by the NHS.Bet Ernest Potter got a gold watch for his 60 years covered in shit, mind you I would have done it!
Five minutes of absolute joy, and a real pleasure to watch this video, it was just great to hear that commentary too, mentioning about the boys waiting to get their locomotive's number, had this film been made in the late 50s it would probably been me at the trackside waiting to collect it, great video, thank you for the trip down memory lane.
ahh, those were the days, whenr ail travel was at its best, none of this modern runnish we have nowa days, and an engine driver could be pround of his engine, when a man was a man.
Another gem of a video! It seems amazing, looking at these old vids, that anyone should have worked in the cold, dark, wet, or searing heat of a locomotive cab; and that even more, they should have done it safely.
Wow great piece of footage....really crisp and sharp.

Lovely piece of footage but i cant help thinking that some of those commentators seem a tad condescending.

It's in my own opinion that nothing beats traveling like riding the rails.

Who is that narrating?
Alvar Lidel? or John Snagge?

I've no idea I'm afraid but if I had to bet, I'd plump for Alvar Liddel!

Is this out of a video/DVD by BTF?

Brilliant. With that load on she appeared to be doing a steady 60mph most of the time.

Ah the good old days of the LMS in nearly all their glory. Wish I'd have been there. Good job!

Yeah. Beats the dullness and the initially underpaid diesels.

Sorry, UNDERPOWERED diesels.

ROFL! Underpaid indeed! If they did get paid though, I can only imagine where it'll end up!

'Well done that man Potter!' No advanced warning system (AWS)... priceless video capturing social attitudes as well as a lovely loco design. Thanks.
