To get Surround sound Quad or higher you need to be viewing in 480p or higher.

1080p supports 7.1 audio

720p supports 5.1

480p supports 5.1

360p and 240p are both only stereo.

YT's 240p files contain a low-bitrate 1-channel AAC audio stream. What you're hearing is 6 channels downmixed to 1 channel (assuming OP tried to upload 6 channels) then upmixed to 6 channels. I.e. you're not hearing 6 channels, you're hearing 1 channel on 6 speakers, and that's the exact same "surround" you'd hear on a single-speaker system.

wheni test this on my ps3 it works for all spearks...I use my turtle beach dss and turn the surround on connected through the optical cable and all spearks sound.

@SpAzMaNiK A search through youtube help makes me think only stereo's possible. It's easy to produce faux surround sound using phase shifting/delay- Dolby ProLogic does that, and maybe the vids on youtube too.

@FR3AK250 The "p" in 720p/1080p stands for progressive. 720i/1080i are both interlaced. The number itself stands for native vertical pixel resolution. Do a google search.

240p flv - 64 kbps AAC, 1 ch.

360p flv - 96 kbps AAC, 2 ch. (if you're using a typical browser with Flash, you're watching this one)

480p flv - 128 kbps AAC, 2 ch.

all mp4 versions (360p/720p/1080p) - 128 kbps AAC, 2 ch.

Regarding YouTube's re-encoding - surround audio for 360p (and presumably 480p) flv versions is not downmixed (any extra channels are simply cut off), as opposed to 240p flv (mono) and mp4 (stereo) versions.

I.e. YT = either mono or stereo, no surround.

Yes, the software is called "Free FLV converter". I got it from download do_t com. When you install it, it will have a box to check that says, "I agree to the terms of service and want to install some gay toolbar". Just uncheck it anyways and it will install without other crap.

HQ and HD may work with AC3 but not DTS. It may work on DTS if your sound card supports it. So far my Tritton AX720 headphones with the amplified/decoder shows Dolby Digital and Dolby ProLogic II works, and I can hear it just fine, up to the subwoofer.

HD-quality videos upload also their decoded audio formats, which has many supported formants in YouTube, but the only downside is that the audio formats support ACC encoding only, which is 2 channel stereo at 44.1 kHz.
