I think its wrong to compare apple to apple which style of martial art is better or superior. In a street fight, all systems go and there are no rules. Given the facts, you can protect yourself better if you are a martial artist. The saying goes: 1st is bravery; 2nd is your strength while the 3rd only calls for any art you have learned and be able to use it. Is it not the level of attainment in each individual? Correct me if I am wrong.
ok, I just youtube some stuff on tai chi for a few hours and am coming to a conclusion. Nevermind about testing your tai chi on the streets. It can get you killed.
I've read a lot about this fight from various sources... and from a few websites and retellings of the fight, it seems they were made to fight using boxing rules.
No grabs. No kicks. None of the more complicated hand techniques or sticking qualities of the respective styles.
It was also presided over and run by western powers.
Don't you think it would have been VERY insulting to be told you could not use your own style? That you must comform to the west for their entertainment?
Given the circumstances, I would not be surprised if both of them ahead of time said, "you know what, screw this, we can't use our own styles and it's just a big joke to the foreign powers... we can't back out, but this wasn't what we signed up for. We are not even allowed to use our own styles... so screw them."
That's why I personally don't give this fight much weight, for or against kung fu, because of the unfavorable circumstances given the fighters to begin with.
I'm sorry. It's hard to believe that two wise martial art grandmasters would agree to such rules handicapping both sides under western power while the chinese audience watches on with chinese commentary. Who would pay to come watch a match like that? People wouldn't create rules like that to bore the fans. No fans equal no money. You get to see all types of martial arts here on youtube with actual combat and application.
I haven't seen tai chi in actual street situation. You should go test your tai chi on the streets let us know if it's effective. Post it on youtube. I'm interested to see that video on here. Someone needs to represent tai chi and bring it to the masses.
@ninpomasta111 Are your sources reliable? I mean, it really just looks like they've never actually fought anyone before... just kind of sat on a pedestal of being proclaimed "masters" when really they just do forms. And by "fight" I mean real, live sparring, not doing compliant demos and two-person forms. I mean, boxing rules aside, they don't keep up guard, they don't utilize stances, they turn their backs to each other, they don't even punch properly. Why couldn't they handle the basics?
@jeffdoeskungfu Yeah, the fight is pretty peculiar. I don't have any links for you right now. I did a lot of research on it back then because I cared a whole lot. Don't care a whole lot right now.
Just thought I'd throw it out there, because it seemed like an interesting (though obscure) version of the story.
Feel free to take it or leave it, or follow up on it, or not.
Forgot to add. WTF is with the haymakers and windmill tactics? I sure as hell hope that isnt what they teach you in Kung Fu. Shortest distance between any point is a straight line.
This fight seriously sucked. The problem with Tai Chi is that it doesn't develop proper punching form at all. Combined with lack of any hard sparring. Sure they might punch hard as hell, but half those punches didn't even connect. So what use is the world's hardest punch if it doesn't land?
This fight was really disappointing, but you can tell the difference between the two fighting styles. I would also say that the taichi fighter may have very powerful strikes, but since it's an internal style, you wouldn't be able to tell. I also agree with the people who say that they are pulling their punches, because it's a show fight and not a death match.
The bishop of Macau insisted that they both had to sign an agreement ahead of time promising not to kill each other. It is a low quality video, otherwise you could see that Wu 's punches left Chan face and shirt soaked with Chan's blood.
None of the keyboard martial artists badmouthing here would survive either of those guys for long. If you doubt it, look up Eddie Wu and tell him that you think his grandfather was a punk!
His grandson, Eddie Wu, was trained by him and is still teaching. You should look him up and tell him to his face that you think his grandfather was a punk. That would be the best way to prove that your keyboard fu is awesome...
Actually, that is not true. the taiji guy is third generation master wu kung yi. the crane stylist is chan hak fu - both are very well known. they are NOT charlatans at all, which is why this "fight" is considered to be a sad display of skill.
Ha ha ha... They can pack their kung fu and throw it away, cause when they start fighting they still swing at eachother like girls!! ;)) and kick like old farts!
well it might not look like a movie when it's real, but does it doesn't need to turn into "Raging Windmill" style either! It was obvious that at least one of these guys found being hit a shocking experience...a good lesson to remember.
despite that awesome old-people gymnastics show he puts on at the beginning, he couldn't fight his way out of a wet paper bag. I love the ancient chinese technique of pointing your chin at your opponent, too bad the other guy was another kung fu larper.
Thanks for uploading this...Considering they're masters... I don't think much of their timing and they are definately holding back... after decades of training, I don't see much in the way of connect and follow etc. It just goes to show... when you really fight, it don't look like a Kung Fu movie!
Worst fight ever!

As I understand the situation, the challenge was issued and they agreed to fight.
THEN the western authorities came in, probably thought this was something to laugh at, and threw in the rules after the fact.
Both had agreed to fight, so it would have been shameful to back out... but like I said, both of them were most likely insulted by the rules.
So in my unprofessional historical opinion neither one cared to begin with. The students of both of these arts know what they are capable of.

amazing video....
never thought that kung fu had a gay sect...
it seems that these two are masters in gay fu...
hahahaha
WTF!!!?!?!?!?!Its like watching elton john fighting George michael
Or Prince fighting Boy George...
I think ...after watching closely their moves ....
They must have left their mastery skills at their purse....
My suggestion??? Get these faggots out of the ring and straight into a knitting class
