Thanks, this video was very helpful. I'm making a cake for my son's weddidng and I wanted to do something a little different. The bow added to the top of the side cakes made it look very special. Be Blessed and thanks for sharing.
Not trying to be mean, but, I think it is unsanitary knowing how many times the cake sugar bow is handled and touched during the production of these cakes, and to add to it, when someone talks while working right over it, creating great chances of unintended human spat conatmination on the icing. yuk
Sei bravissima complimenti davvero proverò a farmi una torta cosi per il mio compleanno grazie per tutti i consigli, anche se sono italiana e non capisco perfettamente l'inglese
Don't use water either. Use alcohol or an extract (vanilla, lemon, etc.) to attach fondant to fondant - water takes too long to dry and can make the fondant "mushy". Alcohol helps it stick better and dries faster.
@g95td2000 You see how the bow isn't staying in place as she puts it on the cake? The fondant is so soft that it wont hold she shape of a bow. It needed to be allowed to sit AT LEAST for a few hours so that it wont collapse like that.
I think this cake is like impressionism. It might look good from afar but up close its very sloppy work. I dont want to be mean. This too I think when judging my work. Thanks though.
????? they dont use water in cake boss and i watch it like every night.......and you are suppose to cut the little square in the center where the ribbons you wrap around the cake meet so there isnt a bump
@swick6 OMG THANK YOU ! Everyone is in love with cake boss, but Duff was WAY before him and he is SOOOOOOOOOO AWESOME ! Agh makes me angry that cake boss gets a shit load of credit.
it depends on how thick your layers are, if it's just a 4-5 inch cake it'll be alright but if it's much taller than that you should put something under each layer with supports on the bottom.
it'll taste better if you put icing between the layers.
@Corinababy14 it doesnt matter how set up it is the first fondent bow i made my sisters were putting the loops on the cake as i was making them and we ended up shoving marshmallows in the loops
under njo circumstances follow the instruction to leave overnight. I did this and everything disintegrated as i was placing it then on the cake, ruining it completely!
fondant is a sugary but pliable dough like substance. They shape and form it like play-dough to cover cakes to make them look smooth, and to decorate them.
It's mostly just icing sugar and corn syrup. You can easily make it yourself. There are tons of recipes, you can also make it with marshmellows and icing sugar.
Fondant is just basically a sugar dough. I myself make it homemade but you can buy it from the store. The easiest recipe I have found for it calls for 1 bag of minimarshmellows and 1 box of confectioners sugar. Making it from scratch is a very tedious and messy job, but worth it in the end in my opinion
Fondant is rolled sugar. It is probably available in England, you can most likely order it online. But I find it easier to make it. Marshmallow fondant is very easy to make and I'm sure if you do research online you can find a recipe. The thing is with icing is that it wont have the round outer edge of the bow. So, to make the bow you would need fondant because its sturdier.
yeah you can get pre-made roll out icing from shops like sainsburies, or cake shops, mould it a little with your hands before rolling just to make it easier to work with
teqnique was great but he cake looked hideous... the fondant must have peeled right off wen she cut the cake and the bow was really uglii...... no offense but my cake looked better
well So you dont have the problem of the fondant peeling off whn you cut a pice Just Simply Put a thin layer of icing on the cake [bread] and when your all done putting a coat of icing on it simply drape the fondant over the pice of bread and it sticks !!
Instead of water I would recomend using an edible glue for sticking the fondant (in england we just call it icing :D) You can get them from most cake decorating web sites or stores :-)
See the idea of the cake is great but I think the technique succs. I don't know maybe she was nervous and couldn't concentrate. But I know one thing this cake looks like when you cut the first slice, the fondant will just peel away
im 11 years old and i did this for my fith grade how to projects and mine turned out great but instead of a bow i did a ribbon and to me its alot easier
I really like how you did this. I think it is amazing craftsmanship! NICE JOB! :)... I hope that this will be as easy for me if I ever try to do this.
fondant tastes like sugary play dough in the US. But I have heard that other countries use marzipan--an icing medium that looks similar but tastes totally different than fondant. I'd love to find a fondant that tastes delicious.
there is a cake decorator website called cakecentral and they have a recipe called michele fosters fondant. I made it and it was so easy and delicious. you can add any flavor to it that you want, but I just used vanilla. it was kind of like eating the marshmallow circus peanut candy.
Fondant makes the cake have a smoother and seamless finish than just frosting a cake with butter cream. I don't know about flavoring it..I'm sure it's already flavored with vanilla?
The ones I've tried taste just like sugar... because it's just sugar with corn syrup. Maybe adding some vanilla flavoring would be a good idea... but they should add just the clear type in order not to ruin the color.
Anyway... if you don't like the fondant, put it away, it's main task is to decorate the cake.
This is NOT a fail. I have seen cakes that are better made, but if I had made that cake I would be monumentally proud. People on the internet are so quick to judge, especially when I doubt you could do better.
A lot of fondant recipes I've tasted were horrible. I found a Marshmallow Fondant recipe that tastes AMAZING! I've been getting into making fondant cakes and everyone loves it. Anybody watching this, it's best to let your bow set up overnight. The fondant is way too pliable to try to make a bow. It's going to collapse.

Fondant makes the cake have a smoother and seamless finish than just frosting a cake with butter cream. I don't know about flavoring it..I'm sure it's already flavored with vanilla?
kmeske 2 years ago
The ones I've tried taste just like sugar... because it's just sugar with corn syrup. Maybe adding some vanilla flavoring would be a good idea... but they should add just the clear type in order not to ruin the color.
Anyway... if you don't like the fondant, put it away, it's main task is to decorate the cake.
