@clumpft It's supposed to be a sad love song. The cake is an (admittedly strange) metaphor for the relationship/love/good times that the singer had with his/her love, which they have lost and will never be able to get back.

You might check out the Richard Harris version of the song, too, if you want a slightly different perspective. Personally, I think he captures the intended mood of the song better.
