While Arnel Pineda can't achieve Steve Perry's soaring vocal range; Steve Perry can't come close to Arnel Pineda in the human factor. Every time I saw a live shot of Steve Perry in a video, he always had a serious look on his face while he was singing. Arnel Pineda has a perpetual smile.

Arnel, I used to be a diehard Steve Perry devotee, but you won me over!!! Keep doing a great job!!!

@NoSteveHasReturned There is the human factor too. There is video on YouTube, of a drunken Journey fan that throws a bottle towards the stage, and it hits Neal in the head. Steve(Perry) stops the concert and launches into a four-letter tirade at the fan who threw the bottle. Neal told Steve to not worry about it because he was okay.

If the same thing had happened with Arnel on Lead Vocals, I think Arnel would have asked the rowdy fan to apologize, and/or to just be removed by security.

Nice review but I still ask myself, "why" ?.....not the review but why the redo ? It only invites comparisons to classics that cannot be improved.......everything to lose little to gain, imho. Don't get me wrong, I love Journey and Arnel is about as close as you can get to Steve but unless they figure out a way to reinvent themselves and distinguish a difference between Arnel and Steve they will continue to be a "cover" act of themselves.......a really good cover act : )

Walmart wanted redos of the classics, so that was always lined up for the new CD. The new CD was only supposed to be a handful of tracks like 4, but they ended up writing some great new material and Revelation was born as we know it now.

It'd be different if they recorded the old songs in the 50s or 60s. But most were done when analog/studio technology was great so there isn't an 'improvement'. It almost seems like a snub at Steve if anything. So much awful emo crap today, we need more new great rock songs. Neil also overplayed on Who's Crying Now as it goes on. The original kept it simple and had a more sikly overdrive sound while this one is just too edgy in my opinion. They shouldn't have messed with stuff already so good.

They should have redone them in a different way like alternate versions of the songs. Redo Wheel in the sky like they play live. Change some tempos and such. It would be more interesting.

It shows how analog can sometimes sound better. The older DSB just sounds better and the bass comes through better. The articulate style of Ross Vallory was such a big part of the sound. Randy Jackson's work in the band was great on the ROR album but just not the same. He didn't that almost fretless-sound finesse that Ross has. Very different style.

The new songs are so good, they should have just wrote/recorded more. Re-doing classics? Nah. They were great enough the first time.

They had rerecord the classics, that was part of the deal with Walmart as thats what Walmart wanted. They were smart to include is as part of a set and sell at the same price as I doubt they would have sold that many of the GH redone by itself.

Ya, the album definitely rocks. I think the music is actually just louder in the mix making his vocals sound further back. Arnel has a strong powerful voice and you can hear little mistake here and there. I like hearing mistakes as it lets us know were all humans and they are really playing their stuff.

The DSB drum mix is what made that song really stand out back in the day. Every instrument had a hook in DSB but I think the drums are too resonant for a song that needs finesse.

Whoever is new always has to be compared with the original no matter how good the new person is, thats just the way it works. Since Perry will never come back to Journey and has since lost his voice from his heyday, Im happy that Journey has moved one with other talented singers.

Good review! I personally like the re-records than the original (now moved to #200 of my cd player). Revelation is in my #1 & #2 spots. It's contemporary and yet nostalgic. More modern and powerful rocking instrumentals. Arnel has great vocal strength that blends well with all Journey members. Glad they re-recorded the Greatest Hits. It's more enjoyable!
