Anyone saying South Africa looked better back then really has been to South Africa for a long , long time. When once the townships were tin huts without any services and most people lived in them. Today much fewer people live in townships as they were and 5 million new homes have been built. Not to mention all the news malls, roads etc. Nostalgia can make a fool out of people when they get too senile to take in new information effectively.

He told me what many on here are saying, that under apartheid crime was much lower than it is now. One of the reasons he left south africa was because of the crime, he told me his house was broken into and cleared out 3 times in 6 months. That's like saying that giving aborigines the right to vote (in 1949) is the reason for Australia's flourishing economy and quality of life.

Apartheid wasn't right but things haven't turned out so great, but there is reason for optimism.

The National Party didn't have the perspicacity to foresee the trouble that was ahead.

I think that people who care about South Africa should work to change and develop a new South Africa that lives up to Mandela's said mission. It will be tough, but I am optimistic. Gee there's many different opinions on here. I don't really want to get involved in an argument. I live in Australia and have a friend who grew up in South Africa, he left in 2002. He told me what many on here are saying, that under apartheid crime was much lower than it is now. One of the reasons he left south africa was because of the crime, he told me his house was broken into and cleared out 3 times in 6 months. He also told me he believes the current government is corrupt.

The quality of life in the Bantustans was up there with the worst in Africa. Apartheid wasn't right but things haven't turned out so great, but there is reason for optimism.

As a person with family in South Africa presently and dating back to the British South Africa Company, I believe that a multiple state solution (the goal of Apartheid) would've been the ideal, or perhaps constitutional minority rule. Capitalism wouldn't allow Apartheid's success. Demand for labour forced blacks out of the Bantustans and into the cities. The National Party didn't have the perspicacity to foresee the trouble that was ahead.

About the South Africa previous to 1994.
This situation had two faces:
-In the economy: The white government gave to South Africa an economy of the First World [factories, roads, railways, true cities (skyscraper, commercial centres, good houses for the whites,...),...].
