I agree the bit is a really bad one. I always start with the snaffle but it's also clear the bit itself isn't the issue; it's that the horse doesn't want anything in it's mouth. I like what this guy did. Not familiar with him but looks like he's a Parelli instructor.
the rope halter is a good idea, but that bit is really stiff and hard and heavy. I would switch bits and see if maybe adjusting it would help because the bit could be hitting the teeth. also try switching the type of metal, and make sure your bit is smooth and not rusty on the mouth piece
As a very new rider - 10 month on the saddle.... this video shock me. The basic being the desmontration seems good, but HOW IT IS DONE is .. just frustating the horse even more. The horse to my knowledge is pass " learning time ' with "puting in... puting out" .. My god. I'm better then I think I guess..
I did everything in this video...for half an hour! The moment I got the bit in, she freaked out. Thankfully she was tied securely, but...
I tried again for about another ten minutes before getting the bit in again; she freaked out again.
The third time was the charm, though. I have no idea why she acted this way or how to avoid it the next time I want to get a bit in her mouth. I am gentle and patient with her, so I don't know why she's behaving this way.
My horse is the same when i go to put a bridle on she wnt open her mouth and it takes about ten min to get it on. My mom said the privouse owners proberlt hit her in the head with a bridle because she misbehaves. But i meet the old owners and they are not very nice
Hi all, I got a problem trying to put the bridle on my horse. When I try to put my hand over his head he start raise his head and his feet and I don't know how to do it. Any suggestions? ill appreciate anyone's help thank you.
my horse does this. but ALOT worse! it drives me crazy :( she gets really good then about a week later shes back to what she was doing. Iv tryed this before but maybe not as good as I could! so im going to go back and keep at this for AGES :) untill shes over it and gives in!
The one thing I didn't see him do was praise the horse. When using behavior modification, there must be a reward system. I don't know anything about horses persay, but if they respond to a paired verbal response (paired with food I suppose) then it would hurry the process up. Also, who the f wants to bite down on something like that? Looks harsh in my opinion.
@jerichomutant in the best way i can put it out for you, so you can understand, let's say there are different 'levels' of bits. If you choose the right level your horses wont mind at all, when your training them, they may be a bit tense, but once they get use to it, they're perfectly fine, now if your choose the wrong bit, it can be bad.
@jerichomutant Horse's mouths aren't like dogs' mouths. They aren't biting down on a metal bit. at all. Horses have no teeth in the spot where the bit lies in the mouth. There is a space (on the top and bottom, and on both sides), that form a gap where the bit fits. But you are correct that there needs to be a reward system, even if it's just a pat on the neck or an apple slice.
my horse that this exact problem and sometimes still does, and its because he's sick or I have harsh hands. He was abused and he doesnt much like the bridle.
With a horse like that, I was taught to stand on the left side of the horse. Put your right arm over the horses nose while holding the bridle as well. Use your left hand to put the bit in. You can use your thumb to get the horses mouth open. If he tries to lift his head, you have your right arm over his nose to stop him. Once the bit is in, use your left hand to pull the bridle over his ears. Some people may think that's mean to hold his head there, but I think it teaches them not to fight it.
your doing anything worng! thats not how you put on a horse that will not take it. my horse use to do that but now takes it good. you guys no anything about horses. k go to my page hunterman578 i have a video of how to put on a Bridle.
I don't see why people keep commenting that he is hurting/scaring the horse. His training methods are gentle and logical, if a bit rushed in my opinion. My only suggestion would be to switch out the curb bit for something gentler. Never did like Curb bits, no one needs that much leverage on their horse's mouth.
Oh I should add I do understand that some horses are head shy and that is reasonable. But I have been taught since i was young if a horse is having problems go back to basics. if you can't put bridle on cuz they don't like their ears touched, rationally don't put a bridle on till you can touch their ears.
He opens his mouth for the bit usually or else my finger goes in his mouth. If my horse ever lifted his head above his withers while my hand is on his neck then we go back to basics and we practice moving away from pressure. He has only once raised his head as high as in video and that was cuz a horse was calling across the arena, I backed him up a few steps to get his mind back on me and again pressure on poll head dropped and bridle put on. it doesn't take long to teach this, 30 secs a day.
Well if ppl would take 30 seconds every time they see their horses to ask them to put their heads down, I don't see this ever becoming a problem. If you wait till the horse is unmanageable to correct it you ignored many many signs that should have been corrected in the first place. I am not very strict with my horse, I have been called too lenient from my friends and instructors but my horse knows respect. his head comes down when my arm goes around his neck he keeps it there till I move it
he is afraid of that bit take it out of that horses mouth. poor thing. the audience must have scared there own horses. poor horses. wow that was so mean.be nice to these horses. if one runs away it will lead the others too.then they wont ever come back.you are also scaring it with your voice and the audience he is so scared poor guy

thank you so much! oh my gosh! thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you! My horse has this horrid problem! again thank you! I have a question. What bit do you recemend for a pleasure horse? thank you,
Thats exactly what my horse does! But if I wont let him toss his head he goes crazy and bolts. Im going to try this today, I hope it works because Im getting rather sick of it.
i would avoid slipping it out and in past his lower teeth because thats usually where problems arise in bitting horses. Once a horse had had a bit catch on his lower teeth enough times, he wont want it in anymore. Whenever this man takes the bit low it hits his lower teeth, then he brings it back up. Instead he should lift the bridle to the top of the horses mouth so it doesnt touch the bottom teeth. and bit him again from the beginning.
If a horse hates the bit THAT much then there must be a reason for it... put him in a hackamore/bitless bridle or even a snaffle bit. have a vet examine his mouth. OR fix your own riding and have kinder hands.
While those are certainly good things to keep in mind, what you have left out is just as important. Behavior can be rewarded. If the horse receives a reward, release of pressure, every time they put their head in the air, it becomes a habit. It does not necessarily mean that there is a medical problem or the hands are too harsh.
Thats true and i DO like the way he is doing this. i just would want to make sure there is no underlying problem first. (wich they may have done ofcourse :P
@dlkoch53 my horse as an extreme bitting problem, worse than this horse, it we've ruled out pain, he's just had a series of owners who allowed him to get away with it, then a cruel trainer who would slam it into his mouth and tie him down to do it.
@ADRASTOSindeimos going into a hackamore doesnt fit the problem, it just swtitches it to something else. If this horse ever were to show it couldnt use a hackamore and(depending on his age) hew couldnt use a snaffle either. The best thing to do is deal with it, perferably with an expert, which is just what this woman did :)
@ADRASTOSindeimos OR maybe because he got away with putting his head up, and he knows that if he does put his head up, he wont have to have the bit in his mouth...
its NOT the type of bit, he would do it with a soft snaffle too, because he knows he will get away with it!

My 2 cents of the show person explaining is this: " Be patient, and try again " other then that I don't see it.

My horse does the exact same thing! She lifts her head so high i cannot reach..I had her teeth done and I thought that would fix it but it didn't...
By the way she lefts her head the minute she sees me coming with the bridle..
I am gonna try this and see what happens.
