um, i dont really know what you mean by 'modern' but the reason the whole opening is the way it is is b/c the doll that came in was the doll of the other girl who was 'eaten' by the other mother and the other mother made it to look like Coraline, the doll is basically a spy that she uses to look at the imperfections of the child's life and make them better so the child will want to stay in the 'other world' with her (to get eaten)

omg  the part that i thought was soo scary in the book was when the coriline was asking the other mother to promise she would be fair in the game and the other mother was like i swear on my mothers grave. and when i found her trying to get out i put her right back in . and corilines just like umm lets swear on something else haha

this is directly from the movie its like the first scene from it and when the eyes are being sown on the needle shows through and in 3D it was like coming at you and so creepy.......it was amazing
