Saw them 4 or 5 times with the electric band a few tears back up in Toronto. I was so thrillled that I got to have my wife hear the muic that made up my young heart.
Thanks to Neal and the crew, but for me, a special thanks to the now-retired John Hawken, who spent well over 30 minutes chatting with us, What a classy and truly nice man. I will miss him a great deal at any possible North America electric shows (We call that a "hint" over here, Dave!)
Tengo mucho tiempo buscando ese tema porque es el mejor tema que se haya grabado de todos los que he eschuchado de esos tiempos. definitivamente es el mejor.
The thing that strikes me is that one never tires of a song like this; on the contrary, it seems to get better, and certainly more poignant, as one gets older. This is deathless music.
"Bringing back the memories that only you and I have seen" reinds me of my first love. simplicity has the ability to touch the heart. Well said spazzoboxer, we all think we are so unique but feelings are so universal. This song is an example of art. In an age where all you have to do to be a musician is talk and hold your balls, this is a rose in the desert.
In the History of great melancholic creations, few could surpass this beautiful composition's ability to penetrate to the core of one's most deeply felt emotions. The poignant simplicity of these lyrics, paired with the accompanying swirling, ascending musical verbalism, envelops a listener with a sense of quiet satisfaction. Tranquility comes with the knowledge that the prospect/hope of unconditional love is universal and achievable. The power of Strawbs music to rekindle optimism is eternal
Lush, powerful music, gorgeous melody, sweet, sweet guitar sound (like Ackerman from Focus). This song and Hero and Heroine make me cry every time. They just slam you completely with their beauty. There's nowhere to hide.
I wish I had only known! I would have come over from Toronto to see them. I saw the Strawbs just once live at Loughborough University in England. The whole experience of that concert blew me away.
Thanks for the wonderful post! This one really takes me back. I had the tremendous opportunity to work with Strawbs in a cable TV public access setting. Truly wonderful folk, even volunteered to give us their day off to record video. Truly awesome!
Truly great prog rock. The bird sounds at the start are nicely trippy. Saw the Strawbs in Kitchener, Canada at a stereo store contest winner type thing. Good times...the owner was apparently the biggest Strawbs fan.
yep....i sang along, myself.. worse than any of 'em, and i'm not drinking... a great song will forgive a guy for that, and go on sounding great in spite of it
However, the album version sounds like late November in Canada. I can picture leaf-less trees and a cold rain or snow storm brewing, knowing that the long cold winter is near.
very special to me, my sister, Anna and my sister, Sylvia, who passed away in 2000 - we all love this song. Brings tears to my eyes - especially verse - hold on to me - I'll hold on to you.
I got in trouble for playing this song at WPYX-FM back when I was a DJ there back in the 1980's Frig what do Program Directors know? I know I was right!
simply one of the best from one of the best bands to come out of late 60's early 70's folk scene.I saw them many times in Sidmouth years ago, wonderfull, also saw them in Paington when the moog broke down,I'm still waiting for the return gig they promised us,only 30 somthing years ago!!love 'em!!
Aw man the guy singing in the audience at the end is a riot, LOL! The Strawbs are heavenly, meeting them was unbearably emotional, I couldnt even speak...
I'm nearing 39 years old. And only just discovered Strawbs. Truly I believe I was born maybe 15 years too late. Still, I am glad that these guys and their prog compatriots are still touring and giving folks my age a chance to relieve a past they never really had.
Great stuff. BlueandWhiteZebra, I had to laugh when you started singing along. It was rich. A little off-key, but I know you were truly enjoying yourself, and that's what it's all about. Thanks for posting this.
Absolutely amazing song. I saw the strawbs playing this song acoustic a couple of weeks ago and it had to be one of the best performances I've seen. Has to be my favourite song by em. It's even inspired my college music compositions!
@BlueAndWhiteZebra Is it not Dave Lambert on his guitar? I saw the Strawbs on Friday night and they played this and Dave Lambert was making the seagull sound on his guitar!! They were fantastic too!!!
Excellent!! 1978 North Halls - 4th Floor Holmes... this band and Renaissance... while reading the Lord of the Rings... still remember like it was yesterday
Wow... such a stunningly beautiful song... remember listing to this on an 8 track at PennState freshman year... someone left it in the room... thought I never heard anything as wonderful...
This is one of the greatest songs og Strawbs. Bought this record in early '70s in Copenhagen. Hero & Heroine, what a title !
Just love this band, so hard, so sad, so .... emotions.
B.t.w. 1:st album is a real GEM. SO ....
Best to You

The part beginning at 5:32 sounds a lot like the beginning of "The Black Parade" by My Chemical Romance. Could they be Strawbs fans?

Brilliant boozey version, just what I expect Strawbs to be like live.
Its a pity about the darkness and the eppy-fit style camera but its all there.
Most excellent.

The "Boys" are playing electric 6/23/07, Patterson, NY
6/27/07, BB King's NYC, and then on for a Canadian tour. I sympathize with your singing, I can't help myself either.
