Haha. This perfectly describes my last encounter with an optrician two years ago. I thought I was so freaking stupid because I could never tell which actually assisted my vision. I developed this brilliant strategy of always picking the second one unless I could genuinely tell a difference and she figured me out. "Are you just picking out the second one?" and I sort of mumbled and she sighed. The rest of the appointment was in sweet, uncomfortable silence.
1. I'm an optician training to be an optometrist - i dont wear glasses
2. Wearing a spectacle correction, corrects your vision so that you can see clearly (6/6 or 20/20 vision). Its Highly unlikely they are partially sighted too.
3 if you cant tell the difference then say that...dont make it up. Although tbf they should have given you the option of 'or both the same'
4. we can tell if your making it up anyway.
5. trial frames/phoropter heads work perfectly well - would you rather hover lenses?
6. In low levels of ametropia, its the patients discretion, some people find it helps some don't. The optician can't decide if your happier looking through the correction or if your happy with slightly poorer vision. Its entirely subjective in lower prescriptions.

the sad truth is that places that sell glasses are not places you will get genuine help for eyesight problems. if you want to improve myopia/astigmatism/hyperopia you do eye exercises. If you have an eye disease/serious disorder see an ophthalmologist. glasses do not cure eyesight problems

They should actually be giving you a choice of 'one is better, two is better, or you can't tell'...'I can't tell the difference' is a perfectly valid answer, and one the doctor needs to hear eventually in order to move to the next level of refining your vision on the 'victorian device' (phoropter). And it is no more up to the doctor to say whether or not you 'need' glasses than it is for him to say you 'need' to take a pain pill for a headache...if your symptoms are bad enough, you'll know ;)
there r a new type of those big glasses things they accualy scan ur eye once and then it comes up on the opticans screen and it tells u if there r any problams

This made me laugh, I can relate so well..I've had glasses for 13 years; and I'm still in my teens, so that's most of my life.
The worst is when they do a retina check. First the pour stuff into your eye LOWERING your defences to the point where normal light is difficult to take. Then they make you lay down, force your eyelids open and shine a light in your eyes until you can hear your brain vibrating.
The doctor I go to is always really impatient too, so it's an emotionally scarring experience.
My eye doctor makes me uncomfortable because he still INSISTS on taking out and putting in my contact lenses for me (even though I've worn contacts for years). Creepy eye touching fetish? Not sure...
i wear contact lenses, and i don't like going to the optician either.. they always ask the same things each and every time i come there.. i just know exaxctly everything they're gonna say.. and what you said about the number 1 and 2 glasses, it IS always the same yea..
when they say "1 or 2" you can say just the same! thats them checking for astigmatism and if they do both look the same that means that you don't have astigmatism.... which is a good thing!

I have just been to the optician, and I was in that room where you see a blurry thing and then a not so blurry thing, like you, but I was in there for an hour :o and in the end I felt a big pressure to choose the most clearer of the two options. It was exhausting

Your impression of an optician is wacked. I am an optician and I do wear glasses as well as contacts. Many people that are in the field go into because they want to help other people see well and also look good. So don't look down on us because we want to help people. So the old victorian contraption your speaking of will always look like that because it works. It's called trial glasses where we put your exact prescription in them so that you can see what the glasses will do for you!!

And when the optician switches the lenses on those giant glasses, I can't help but laugh... and plunge us both into awkward silence. The last time I went he asked, "what are you laughing about?" I spurted out, "sorry, just an awkward laugh haha... ha... ha."
Whenever I go, my sister always happens to be there with me, and she can never help having like a major laughing fit. Because those Victorian-thingies-whatever-you-called-them... absolute ridiculosity.
And that machine thing that you have to put your chin on and you look into the thing, even more so!
In fact even when my sister isn't there, I have my own laughing fit. Which causes me not to focus and may explain why my glasses are never the right prescription.
i am the exact opposite. i absolutely love the optometrist. i like walking out with a new set of specs and being able to see clearer than before. it also helps that my optometrist is so fucking gorgeous.
Yeah it's the same for me. My optician just get too close to my face, i kind have to fight the urge to slap him away lol. I got my £100 pound glasses around january but i only have to wear them when i'm driving. And i'm learning so that's about once a week lol. They're funky though, they're purple :D

I basically lie each time as well. I got my glassess changed and I had to go through that one or two? thing again. I really can't tell so I make them do it at least three times before I just choose the second like always haha.
my aunt went to work in an opticians and she was made to wear glasses with clear glass in them!!! she has 20.20 vision yet she had to wear frames. haha :P
if lens 1 and 2 are the same that means u dont have a cyl in your prescription,
it depends on ppl personaltiy if they want to see clearer or not/have glasses or not coz it doesnt have an effect on how your prescription matures jus if u wana spend the cash 2 c better

My favourite bit when I go to the opticians is when the person is about 1cm away from you with this torch shinning right in your eyes, if you weren't blind before, you are now cos of the bloody light! And you can hear them breathing really heavily. It must be a necessity to have asthma when you apply for the job.
Where I'm from,(we are not communist and we do know english, for the most part) most of us wear glasses. Most say its attributed to the fact that we love our books. for me, it's because of the telly. personally, the world is a little better blurry.(I know, incredibly irrelevant, remove the comment if you like. "why did you comment?' you may ask.. it's because i need exposure and because i'm incredibly lonely. I'm also very embarrassed because I had to recomment due to a slight gramatical error)
i went and got my eyes checked about 2 years ago, and after the tests he just started to look really worried and just said 'please please please don't tell me you drive'.. needless to say, i needed glasses. i didnt realise everyone saw what i saw when i actually wore them, i felt like bionic or something, when in fact, i could just see like a normal person. i seriously didnt realise you were supposed to be able to see the dvd/settopbox lights/messages from the couch..:P

HAHAHA I completely understand! Sad story, but when I was younger the optometrist asked my mother if I was slow b/c it took me so long to answer which one I could see better with..."1 or 2?" lol But it wasn't cuz I was slow, I just couldn't tell the difference either between the two! haha Geez! Needless to say, we never went back to that doctor.

haha same but! after they put them 5 different lences in, my eyes have given up figuring it out whats going on and if i look under the glasses at the floor for a bit, they go back to normal and the lence looks different

I basically lie each time as well. I got my glassess changed and I had to go through that one or two? thing again. I really can't tell so I make them do it at least three times before I just choose the second like always haha.

my aunt went to work in an opticians and she was made to wear glasses with clear glass in them!!! she has 20.20 vision yet she had to wear frames. haha :P

if lens 1 and 2 are the same that means u dont have a cyl in your prescription,
it depends on ppl personaltiy if they want to see clearer or not/have glasses or not coz it doesnt have an effect on how your prescription matures jus if u wana spend the cash 2 c better

also tbh if you didn't have glasses you probably wouldn't aspire to work in an opticians. mooooost probably the reason why all people who work there are wearers of giggs. This probably leads the reason why whichever pair of glasses you pick out, the workers don't think they suit you and pick out glasses that can only be described as Deidre rejects :P :) x

My favourite bit when I go to the opticians is when the person is about 1cm away from you with this torch shinning right in your eyes, if you weren't blind before, you are now cos of the bloody light! And you can hear them breathing really heavily. It must be a necessity to have asthma when you apply for the job.

Where I'm from,(we are not communist and we do know english, for the most part) most of us wear glasses. Most say its attributed to the fact that we love our books. for me, it's because of the telly. personally, the world is a little better blurry.(I know, incredibly irrelevant, remove the comment if you like. "why did you comment?' you may ask.. it's because i need exposure and because i'm incredibly lonely. I'm also very embarrassed because I had to recomment due to a slight gramatical error)

i went and got my eyes checked about 2 years ago, and after the tests he just started to look really worried and just said 'please please please don't tell me you drive'.. needless to say, i needed glasses. i didnt realise everyone saw what i saw when i actually wore them, i felt like bionic or something, when in fact, i could just see like a normal person. i seriously didnt realise you were supposed to be able to see the dvd/settopbox lights/messages from the couch..:P
