  • One day I plugged an old electic organ into the ms20. I didn't use the FV conversion but I filtered it with sample&hold commanded by keyboard. It was difficult not to get distortion.

Have you tried this with your Phili?

  • cool stuff!

  • Any chance you would be willing to part with the MS20?

  • Nintendo Guitar!

  • @kawless ya dam right!!

  • lol at apple logo on your guitar poor kid

  • main giler dh

  • goldfrapp puts her voice through it! sounds just like what your playing

  • @cprostudio The voice solo in Lovely Head ? I always thought it was made this way.

  • man that sounds like some really tripped out spacey wah

  • at the beginning it sounded very much like the mxr blue box

  • How does it handle chords?

  • @PimpinBassie2 Not well, it cant play chords

  • as you plug the guitar into the synthesizer, the sound was modified!!! LMAO

  • Just the how the hell did you do that? I seriously wanna know! How's it set up? This would be fantastic on stage to do as an intermission.

  • @DeadWhiteButterflies MS20 has a pitch-CV converter

  • YEAH PHILICORDA! :-)

  • Sounds like the bass of Bootsy in the "Let's Play House" song (Parliament, Trombipulation lp, 1980)

  • ништяк (cool)

  • Maby some reverb could be an idea...

  • would be ;)

  • @haakondale true if you were wanting to have it easier on the ear - but if you just want to hear how it sounds raw then reverb isn't ideal. It sucks when you're trying to look for synth demos to see how they sound, then people put delay and reverb on it. Defeats the point of a demo in some respects I think.

  • @haakondale could be if you wanted it more pleasing to the ear, although I like how it's completely dry because you get to hear how it sounds out of the box. Too many demos use the crowd pleasing delay and reverb I think, which doesn't properly represent how the synth actually sounds.

  • What is the white keyboard that the synth is resting atop?

  • It's a philicorda, check out my other vid

  • very very cool. thanks for posting! love seeing people do interesting things with these old synths...

  • hey, maybe a dumb question but what is on your signal out port? my dad gave me this synthesizer (used to be his own) but i have no clue what or how to use it, do u just put ur guitar amp on the out port? thnx

  • OH MY GAWD you lucky bastard!!!

  • idd you lucky bastard!

  • @TomNat0r the synth has to have a pitch to voltage converter, and if it does just plug it in where it says ext in or pitch/voltage or whatever and it doesnt need to be amplified before you plug it in to the pitch to voltage converter and that should be it.

  • This is the best thing ever

  • Great! Would you like to explain to me, how u did this without a MIDI pick-up on your guitar?

  • The thing is, this synth can process sounds from any external sound source. Even a mic.

  • can you run a guitar through the korg r3?

  • i don't think it has an ESP

  • what is that?>

  • External Signal processor, (its in my video desciption), its needed to convert any normal audio signal to something the synthesizer works with, in this case..Control Voltage

  • it must have an audio in (even the microkorg has)... so you, more or less, can do the same... although, you wont be able to use it as a cv controller... so no oscillators, you just will be able to use the filter section and the effects and the virtual patch... even so, is a nice way to experiment...

  • hey man how do you run your guitar through that synth.. i've actually been experimenting with that idea for so long now & i can't seem to get it to work.. do you havto buy special pickups?

  • You should play "In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida" with that kind of sound you know

  • Does the fact that he is rich make him a bad person?

  • YES

  • lol. thats exactly what i thought of.

  • You dont know that he's rich--those are ugly blinds... not to be mean...

  • yeah but his stuff is fuckin killer. I don't care who you are... if you've got an ms-20 then you're one up in my book

  • no play jordan with teh effects

  • jordan isnt the only buckethead song you know

  • when i see that apple sticker on your guitar - it makes me want to smash the screen with an axe - I dont know why - Geek Chic eh?

  • thats sickk, i want an ms 20

  • is their anyway to do this through a korg r3

  • Sounds lite the old game "ski or die"

    I like it!

  • Yeah thats what I thought, reminds me of the glory days of the NES.

  • why the hell do you have an Apple logo on your guitar??

  • its an iguitar

  • ahah

  • what the fuck is an iguitar man?

  • loool, 'Its an Iguitar'. Just what the world doesent need.

  • The MS20 ESP is really sweet, but a bit eratic on long sustained notes, tends to wobble.

To hear how a pitch to voltage converter can sound, hear the solo on Todd Rundgren's "When the Sh*t Hits The Fan" from "A Wizard A True Star" or "The Spark of Life " from his "Todd" album.

  • Question: The MS-20 obviously has pitch tracking capabilities, but can it then take that pitch and output it to CV for controlling a modular?

  • That should be possible.

The best way to see the external signal processor is to see it as a seperate component of the ms-20, it can track (or amplify) the sound of an external signal. If you want the CV that it creates, you have to patch it to the 'synth' section of the ms-20, so, in other termt, if you have to patch the cv to the synth, you can aswell use an other synth. as long as the CV is the same.

  • I just have bougt an MS20, how can I play my bass or guit through it? plz show me where to plug...tnx

  • look at the picture that is linked in the description.lool

    epic fail

  • ...where is that description?

  • to the right of the video, the thing that tells u about the video, it has a link to a picture look at it.

  • stop whining. he could drill an asshole shaped gape through his guitar and you should all care less because its not your guitar.

  • Goatse guitar - it has potential !

  • Wow. :O

  • I have the legacy MS-20 usb controller and when I patch it up like indicated in your jpg I get no audio input from my guitar. The signal in 'led' will not indicate any kind of input. I even tried hooking up my mp3 player to the mono plug there, but alas, nothing. Anyone??

  • Throw it in the trash and get a real MS-20 instead.

  • I will get the real one once I find one reasonably priced.

  • what is that white keyboard?

  • Its a philicorda (take a look at my other vids)

  • wow very cool effect

  • MS-20 is really good thing. I just can wonder what someone who can play guitar could do with that synth.

  • is that modded or you runnin the strings through cv?

  • that is pretty cool...is this possible with a MICROKORG?

  • dude, your guitar skills sucks. x_x

  • I don't really think that's the point of this video. It sure made you sound intelligent though...

  • fuck musical orgasm

  • hahaha! Zappa's ghost on your back side...

  • yeah!

  • If this helps, ther is a Korg module, the MS-03 Signal Processor, that make same function as the MS-20 ESP, plus more controls and outputs like oct/v (eg. Minimoog) to pilote Vco synths.Sorry for bad english.

    Maurizio

  • I cant wait to do this with my new alesis ion, However a ms 20 would be really nice, its on the list I just havent found one yet, nor could I afford it right now.

  • Excellent

  • eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeddddddd! i am you're biggest fan XX! kelly.

    *kucht*

  • fking wicked niceee!!!

  • Is that a Philicorda I see under there?! Beautiful!

  • yep! it is. but it is also in need of some repairs, it died a few weeks ago. I didn't had enough time to repair it.

  • lol @ the apple sticker on the guitar

  • Very cool that the synth can do that.

  • awesome 10/10

  • this is just using the input on the synth itself?

  • lol sounds like a 80's video game lol

  • Hey, I have the Korg MS-20 legacy collection (a controller). Can I do that ESP stuff also? When I put my phone in the phone input I only hear a trigger. How come? Thanks for helping

  • lol

  • same as above

  • Hey, nice sound!. I have a ms-20 legacy. Can I do that stuff too?

How does it work then, it only has a USB out..

    Thanks for helping.

  • I thought I could hear some of a Zelda II song in that noodling.

  • Hello, cool sound! I was wondering if you know if and how I could get that sound on my Nord Modular? What module is the guitar voltage coming into? Directly to the oscillator? Anyway, any info would be much appreciated, thanks.

  • the guitar voltage is going into the external signal processor , and the esp coverts it into a usable voltage for the vco, if you want it on your nord modular, i guess you need a midi element on your guitar

  • How's the tracking with chords? It kinda sounds like a octave down pedal type of tracking

  • It's a Mono synth :) so , 1 note only. If i play a chord, it would be a total mess.. sounding like a plane crashing ;)

  • Oh I'm very familiar with it's non polyphonic capabilities (I'm a synth nerd/junkie), I was talking about the guitar ;D

If by any chance you make another ESP vid, could you do a quick sample of how it sounds with guitar chords or polyphonic keyboard chords?

  • Hehe ok,

Well, I can run the chords through the filters for example (if thats what you mean)

  • Nah I'm more interested in how well it tracks the VCO(s). It's a bit difficult building a decent pitch to voltage converter and I'm curious how other brands step up to bat. I'm one in the many SDIY nerds that are really interested in this, so you'd be doing alot of peeps a huge favor! thanks ;D

  • Ok, but the vco's can only track 1 note, so what use is it to play a chord?

  • Just that, the vco. I know it'll sound choppy but if you could just strum the fret board once and let the notes decay on their own that would be pretty much all I need to hear.

  • cool!

what's with the apple sticker on the guitar though?

  • Well, I really like my iMac ;)

  • Hey deuser,

this is great. I used the MS20 pitch to CV option for a live gig once. The tracking is terrible, it glitches in all sorts of unspeakably beautiful ways.

I set the pitch tracking so that 1 octave on the guitar resulted in about an octave and-a-half from the MS20.

I was unable to reproduce the setting though so I stopped using it on live gigs but it did leave me with a live recording of the best guitar/synth solo I ever did.

  • Hey, if I might ask.. exactly how are you doing that? Is that just a midi guitar (if so, could you please tell me what kind and where I might find one...), If not... are you useing a specfic processor to convert it to midi... And finally, if midi is not involved at all.... would you be so kind as to explain the steps to achiveing that effect... Thanks much...

  • Hey, Its not a midi guitar just an ordinairy Ibanez.

The synthesizer i use has an external signal processor (esp). With that esp i can convert my guitar signal into a voltage that controls the sound processor of my synth (the voltage controlled oscilators or VCO's). I can also jack in a microphone and control the synth by singing! Its a great feature of the Korg MS-20.

I hope this information is usefull for you. if theres something you don't understand, just ask :) .
