When I was 7, my father owned a store and hired a gay worker. Needless to say, he was an awesome person, and me and him were like best friends. Unfortunately, he was deported. Ever since, I have had full respect for gays. Also, my parents divorced when I was about 3, and both partnered. One of which was a full on christian (and a psychopath he would freak out when my mother wasn't home.) he tried to bring me to church, bit I didn't want to because I thought it was idiotic. :)

You can't legislate loyalty. For those who are loyal to America the pledge is superfluous. For those who are not loyal to America the pledge is meaningless. So why have it? Once I realized what the pledge represented, my freedom of speech, I never said it again. Some idelas are more important than empty gestures.

We don't have to pledge anything in the UK. If you're at a Church of England school, the Lord's Prayer is kind of compulsory, but I don't think any punishment would be levied if you refused to recite it.
Well, in a sectarian school I would expect that. I attended a Catholic school at one time and prayer was part of the curriculum. But loyalty oaths are meaningless.
