@wizman246237 this may be late, but I'll try to explain anyway.
When he simplifies the second equation, the negative carries when he multiplies it out. When you are subtracting, you're essentially adding a negative which is why he puts a + after 3x. Sorry. That was a bad explanation. D;
Oh and ttor68, great videos you have! Makes studying for my midterm much easier. ^^
i am an online college student and i was having the hardest time with this and all math pretty much and the examples they gave me just confused me further but thanks so much you explained it perfect and i cant believe i understood thanks...
Nice Nice Video. I really loved your video. Youtube can be a great asset for you. If you need any help getting your video exposed, check out this site called tubeviews [dot net] It has really done wonders for me, I have built 3 Channels up with videos at top in position and this is my forth channel i'm going to working on.
wow, now I'm taking a algebra course in college and the professor is good...but the way she explains things I don't get at all...my first test I got an 79 and the second i got and 51 (it was all common mistaken like changing the neg and positive sign)...now this test coming up is and elimination and substitution method. Watching your video I totally understand it now, wow! Thanks your a great help.
So much better than my Algebra teacher. Thanks! <3

why does he add a + after 3x when there isn't a + anywhere in the 2ND equation? How do you know when to do this?

I am glad it helped...I have others over similar topics(note that I refer to the addition/subtraction/linear combination method as elimination).
