As a kid Deadly Earnest really scared me. If we had been out late and come home while he was on I would leap behind the couch and hide. Just one glance of him would give me nightmares. Dad would always say come out of there, but I would wait till the movie started. Now I can lol.
I saw Deadly at the local shopping centre ( Thrift Park ) in Melb. He took a swig of blood (tomato juice) from a glass and some kid in the crowd fainted, what a showman!! Thankyou so much for the ghoul times.
As terrified as I was of Deadly earnest as a kid, I used to watch him late on a Friday night when i used to sneek into the loungeroom without my parents knowledge. One night I remember watching The Gill Man in the dark and was so petrified I too was hiding under a blanket until these cats starting fighting ouside the loungeroom window on the fence and making horrible noises, I took off and dived into bed and not able to sleep at night thinking the gill man was coming to get me.
ha whata cack... I loved watching - or half watching Deadly on a friday night if memory serves me correctly....used to scare the crap out of me (7 or 8)... Ralph was great..lots of humour wish he was on now.... Late night maybe on go channel!
I remeber Deadly Earnest. The show featured a move called "The Ghost of Sierra de Cobra". It was the most frightening movie I have till this day ever seen.I hid behind the bookcase to watch movies I wasn't allowed to & this movie made me so paralised with fear I couldn't move and got busted by Mum.IMDb web site has dedicated 2 pages of other peoples experience watching this movie and we have Deadly Earnest to thank as i'm sure the others watching it were watching it in the 60's like me.
Mum used to send me to bed around 8.30 on Friday nights and wake me in time to catch the show. As I was only 9 at the time, this was a pretty big deal for me.
I remember seeing a couple of films that caused more than a few sleepless nights... The War of The Worlds, THEM!, The Blob, The Atomic Submarine and The Monster That Challenged The World. Deadly Earnest predated MST3K by decades, but he made even the worst SF B-movies enjoyable. Brilliant!
I had the pleasure of working on the production team at ATV 0 in the days Deadly was running. It was very much a staff produced effort with Ralph Baker and the crew always getting involved. In short it was fun and had a great cult following. Television was the best industry to work in in Australia in the 60's.....G'day Ralph if you are still around. Mike Alsop.
Deadly made a feature apearance at my churches annual fate when I was a kid , to see him live was just as scary and unnerving as on the teev . His character type as a late night horror flick introducer has been thoroughly parodied but, Deadly was genuinely frightening amongst a bunch of hacks and hams that came along later. I met Ralph at a party in the late 80's as it turned out he was a friend of my mate's mum! He went on to running a puppet theatre touring schools.
cheers, i knew i wasnt dreaming nobody seems to remember what im talking about tho, it was when sky first came on late 80's i think, it showed alot of low budget horrors, also what was the show that had a family of monsters who sat down to watch a horror movie while having dinner?
i remember deadly earnest being english dressed like dracula and looked a bit like del boy, he presented horror shows too, i was about 6 so i might be wrong, i wasnt as old as this it was on sky 1
There was a different one for each state, the Sydney one looked like 'Lorne" from Angel. I've not heard of him being on sky 1 but it possible the character was revived or copied, the name is a fairly obvious pun

Deadly's question about torture and laugh at 01:50 is pure genius.
