I think the Genesis version should have left out the referee. This would of alleviated some of the slowdown that occurs and maybe allowed for more background animation.
SNES sounds are not bad. The music is good, but the voices are too flat. On the plus side, it has all the characters, and cinemas.
Genesis - is not perfect either. Graphically, it is WAY larger and detailed. But colors are limited and the slowdown is HORRENDOUS! Backgrounds are lacking sprites/animations. Sounds are twangy and fuzzy. But I prefer this version because of the 'satisfaction' of finishing your opponent. Still no scaling! But both deserve the respect due to their system limitations.
Here's my TRUE UNBIASED COMPARISONS of both versions. It may take 2 posts, but all fanboys (especially Sega ones) listen closely. Before I begin, I own both versions.
SNES - Graphically, it could have been better. It's no lie. The smaller sprites meant grainy detail. Of course, there was no scaling at all. A little would have made a difference. Orange blood? It looked red in the previews. No fatalities? To top it off, you don't even 'finish' your opponent. He/she gets up after the final blow.
I love the sega version, more arcady and I think they did a heck of a job...coming from someone that owns three copies of the original Neo Geo version and the Sega version still impresses me till this day.
@gamecollect101 See that is where I'm coming from (except I only own one copy for the AES). The Genesis version is more accurate to the Neo-Geo where the SNES one just really takes away from it.
@TheDemoGameplayVault No and I thank you for your comments. So many people have lashed out at me for what I said when it's just an opinion, just as you pointed out. All of have our own opinions on everything and that is what makes us individuals. I do plan on continuing the series I've just been in school and I have almost no time. I hope this Christmas season I will be able to add on to this series with an overhaul since I'm so much better at making videos now.
@TheDemoGameplayVault The reason for that is because the small characters really take away from the arcade feel. Earthquake was always my favorite character in the game so it hurt me so much to have him taken out. But the ugly looks of the SNES game really pulls you out of the arcade experience.
Its a shame the SNES went with the "scaled" out perspective the whole time. Overall it looked closer to the original game, but the characters looked way too small.
imo if you really want to play this game... you gotta have a neo geo aes... but then again thats not always practical another good vid thumbs up again
Check out Brotherhood of Leet at my youtube channel - a re-imagining of WW2 dramas like Band of Brothers and The Pacific as if they were set during the 8 bit wars of the 1980s where Nintendo and Sega are waring nations.
I'm sure the SNES had smaller characters so that the characters could be as far apart as the arcade allowed, even though the scaling effect was missing.
the graphics from the genesis version where better yes. but cmon. the sound there sucked balls! the snes version had the original sound samples and the music was way closer to the original. btw. i own a neo geo and samurai spirits 1-4.
not really, but i prefer the snes version, because samurai shodown lived from the sound in my oppinion. its been a long time i played these versions, but i think the gameplay was pretty even. so its just the bigger better sprites on the genesis version. dont get me wrong, i was a huge sega fan.
Dude why do you keep on reviewing fighting games? There is much more stuff to talk about, like the different concoles, the Sega add ons, and many other things. I'm not trying to be an ass or anything, but the title does say Sega vs Nintendo, not Sega fighting games vs Nintendo fighting games.
It's because of the size of the sprites on the Genesis version. The system could not handle the sprite of Earthquake. But the SNES had tiny little sprites so Earthquake though was bitter than the other characters in the game was still tiny compared to the beautiful sprites on the Gen.
In my opion, back then if you wanted a fighting game console you had to get NeoGeo. It had Fatal Fury,Samurai Shodown,King of Fighters, and Art of Fighting. But damn $650 is a little too much for a system
This is flat out absurd, arcade 2D fighting games was not a Genesis strong point. It's one-two punch were sports titles and the EA catalog. Where is the review of the sports titles for both machines? Nowhere to be found
Reviewe: dude, if you were such a fan of he game, and not a mindless button-masher, you would notice how the genesis version took away ALL the usefull slashes from the characters and replaced them with repeat animation frames, like Haomaru's hard slash, seen here at least 3 times. It's not supposed to be a stupid double twirl. It's supposed to be a BIG lunging slice. The gameplay on the snes was arcade perfect, while the genesis was a pretty wreck. Frustrating for any TRUE fan of the arcade game
Though what you say is true and how they tried to make the game a 6 button control rather than sticking to the arcades 4 button control was rather annoying Sure you might say well that was just to get the strong attacks on one button but I don't like that idea. But also a TRUE fan would hate about the SNES one is almost everything the game is ugly and is annoying to play because it's such an eye sore. I'll stick to my AES version.
Oooh, I love this game! I've never played either the Genesis or the SNES version, but I've played the NeoGeo/Arcade version once. Man, good times. It's a shame that the arcade I went to went out of business shortly after.
sega is just going forward because your only doing the fighting games! DX nintendo is family fun, so that means, that sega wins right away, because it is not meant for familys to play! ¬.¬
Not true. When it comes to fighting games SNES had the better games. But ... with the games thus far it just has not worked out to Nintendo's advantage.
There was only one system that was capable of handling a game like Samurai Showdown back in the day, and it was called the 3DO. I was the proud owner of one, and the conversion from arcade to 3DO was just like the conversion of Super Street Fighter II Turbo from Arcade to 3DO. Flawless in every way.
Actually I still have my 3DO and Samurai Showdown on it. It was by far the best (excluding the AES version that is) for the home system with the scaling and everything. But still played very choppy.
Hopefully within the next week or so. Depends on my job because they have me doing manditory overtime right now that when I get home all I want to do is sleep. Anyway yeah I remember World Heroes, I love that game. I've got both on my AES but don't have WH Jet yet.
I think the Genesis version should have left out the referee. This would of alleviated some of the slowdown that occurs and maybe allowed for more background animation.

@SegaVsNin, That's exactly how I see it also even for SF2, Mortal Kombat etc...it was always so much cooler to own the Genesis versions.

Gameplay would be more authentic on SNES because the players could stand apart as far as they can in the arcade version.
