"The Forgotten Front", seems like most people think that WWI was fought in France but these guys were going through the same in northern Greece and having to cope with malaria too. My Grandfathers brother was in the Hampshire Regt and was killed in Salonika on the 1st Sept 1918 while attacking the Roche Noire. I'm very proud of this man I never met, he died for our freedom !
Very interesting. My Grandfather served in the RE in this campaign. He won the MM and the Cross of Karageorge first class with swords for repairing phone lines under fire. I've still got his stirrups, bayonet, horses bit and medals. Also have some photos and one of those classic "soldier" portrait photos. He looks like he ripped heads off for fun- very stern looking.
He survived the war dying in 1973.
What are the origins of the "Under the devil's eye" phrase?
The 'Devil's Eye' was an observation post on the Grand Couronne from which the whole of the area could be seen by the Bulgarian forces. Glad to here you grandfather lived so long. Mine died in 1934 after being invalided out in oct 1918 with malaria and TB.
