  • Solos were really good.......I felt like the rhythm section and horns could have interacted a little more kind of like at the beginning of the trumpet solo. Very cool song to play....especially as a combo!!!!!!

  • Whats up witht the audio? Its like a Mongolian Cluster Fuck Up. This is a great song and the audio is screwed up. WTF?

  • That sax player was gettin it!

  • wtf happened to the audi of this video?

  • me and my buddies played this song for 35 minutes...three sax solos, trumpet, bass, guitar, and drum solos... it was ridiculously fun..Red clay forever stuck in my head

  • IT SUCKS VERY BAD...everyone seems so dry

  • the rhythm section was spot on. faithful to the spirit of the original, which was about tryng new things. I guess that applies to all of the soloist as well. the trumpet did a good job trying to achieve freddie's rawness. People need to realize that trumpet is harder than saxophone to make sound good in a jazz context. The dude'll get it.

  • 3:45 is damn good

  • good job! check out my kids playing red clay (the big fat swing company)

  • Needs more cowbell :P

  • We're playing this in my University's combo this semester. Looking forward to it a lot. Really good job, by the way!

  • These guys are great! Hats off to everyone who has cajones enough to do Freddie's music in public! There will never be another but hismusic will live in infamy! RIP Freddie

  • it feels empty to me.. naw dont like it..

  • could took it a little faster but i don't want to take away from it

  • Idk; personally, I like it slower. . .

  • NEEDS MORE BASS, ALWAYS ^^

  • @bugg333 Not to be confused with cowbell...but agreed, the bass line is like the heart and soul of this song... i love it, i need to play it again...

  • That sax player has some sick chops o.o

  • Space out those solos. Great Ideas but you have to space it to add to the effects. Probably should play it in the harder key too.

  • why should they play it in a harder key?

  • Because that original key forces you to use better ideas and opens up creativity. The current key they are using is very common so it kinda stifles their creativity in a sense. Listen to Freddie's version and look at his solo transcription.....The ideas are sick. If he had played it D i bet his solo would not have been half as good.

  • Well, idk about Freddie's solo :P, but I would definitely agree with that theory for these students; personally, playing in a key that I've used non-stop since 6th grade (I'm a high school junior) limits me, but trying something that I'm not as used to allows me to play more things that I haven't played before because I don't have a boring lick to pull out of my back pocket every other measure.

  • nice!!

  • They should of used a guitarist in this one. It is in rock feel after all. Saxophonist did a pretty alright job. Agree with comments on needing more space and don't be afraid to take your time building a solo. Just don't get lost.

  • pretty good

  • Did you bring the song down a half step?

    my bands arrangement sounds higher

  • The real version is done in the key of Cb. But since 99.98% of high school bands cant cut it; they moved it down to Bb.

Fucking hate combo pieces turned into high school big band charts

  • oh well that makes sense

  • Our jazz combo band plays the song in C flat minor. (Tought in college by Frank Catalano) I think that is how the real song is...

  • Yup same with mine. Thats the way its supposed to be played but most people think the changes are to tough and take it down to Bb

  • You guys will go far with your music if you continue promoting the great hits from the masters like Freddie Hubbard, Sonny Rolins, CannonBall Aderle, et al! BEST!

  • have to agree with everrice there, solos just didnt build properly. Seriously felt like it sat at one level the entire time. Although the sax player did make his solo a lil more interesting towards the end... Need more space and dynamics!

  • head was clean but sorry to say the solos were boring as hell

  • I agree, nothing stood out, but the quality was great!

  • Why do I still read people's youtube comments?!? Ive tried boycotting so many times before....

These students sounded great. Great intonation, etc. And their Solos were thoughtful with good ideas...love how everyone's an critic on here. Well done fellas, keep up the good work

  • Called stating their opinions..

I dont like people flaming stuff that I think is good.. But its free speech

  • Very Clean, very nice

  • That sax has a really nice tone!

  • sucka nigga!

  • lol, yes, tehy stole this beat

  • that was pretty good, i loved the break at the end into the piano solo, very stylish :)

  • man we trumpet players are awesome huh but the guy who played the trumpet here is awesome!! NICE JOB you should've added a trill in your solo I like doing it in the D minor chord II chord yah but good job

  • great sax playing. love this tune.

  • goodlooking bassist though...gotta have us goodlooking bassists!

  • soloing in the head? different...im just not sure! ha nice playing

  • I just can't hear the ninth.

Ben, you gotta quit marking time when you play..

  • I just can't hear the ninth!

  • Absolutely amazing. I am severely impressed with the quality of sound this group puts forth!!! Again, great job!!!
