There is a positive light to all this debate. The more we talk about the issue the more people will be educated and the better we can make effective decisions that will benefit everyone :)
There will always be struggles with resources as our populations increase. The best we can do is use them with the least amount of disturbance to the natural ecosystems while still making a profit. I hope that the pipeline can be relocated to reduce the ecological impacts while still maintaining a profit.
@HillsideFights Aw thanks :) Not just any hippie though an educated one ;) I think you have a point, however, our problem in forestry isn't conservationists (at least not the main problem) it's the low lumber prices and the lack of international trade. Only Asia is still trading with us increasingly. You are right if we stop logging forests then we are scewed but there needs to be a balance between sustainability and economics.
@HillsideFights you are a short sighted Walmart shopper . That pipeline and the tankers will fuck up the food source , then who is going to feed the natives . That pipeline
is so China can send more useless shit back to N America . As for alternative fuel , 10 years of war and 5 trillion $ , there definitely was better ways to use that then feed Cheney and Rumsfeld's buddies . and no this wasn't written on an iPhone made by Chinese robots .
@mrstudes 1. I do not shop at Walmart. 2. Weird how people still think that the war in Iraq was started over oil, Canada being the largest supplier of oil to the US, Iraq being the 7th. and that pipeline, is so Canada can make some money, In BC there is almost 50 cents of tax on every liter of gas sold, tax money that goes to funding for your roads, your sidewalks, what you bike, walk, ride, or drive on.
@mrstudes and no one, can say without a doubt, that there will be oil spills, do you know the future? over a time period of something like 10 years, the native lands that border where the pipeline with go, with be paid over 600million dollars, there are 30 some odd tribes. that 600 million dollars will feed them.
Pipelines leak, Fact , there is a chemical line returning to Alberta so it's not just oil to Kitimat . Douglas Channel isn't some nice place with sand banks and calm seas . You actually think the US went to Iraq to free the people from tyranny. Feel free to educate me on the topic . 50 cents on gas , not oil , for Kitimat there will be 100 jobs and the same people that start the pipeline will end the pipeline , so a few short term jobs then qualify for EI , ya that's real job creation .
@mrstudes i never said why the US went to Iraq, you are just speculating, but what i do know is it wasn't about oil. sure 100 jobs... and 600million dollars
@HillsideFights And 1 more thing , the 600 million won't be going to 1st Nations. Harper and Flaherty's concerns would have to be massive Gov. pension funds , where
to get that money from . Also ,people who's priority is to have lots of money and live in 5500 sq ft houses don't really make me warm and fuzzy , polluting till exhaustion is a fucked up way to exist but that's the priority of the nouveau riche , aka oil miners .
@HillsideFights No , you're confused , oil is Enbridge , gas is a whole different company ,That would be a refinery company .
I don't think 600 million will be coming out of their pocket . You need to read
Confessions of an Economic Hit Man . Iraq and Afghanistan is all about oil flow .
Holy fuck you're serious ??? The Military Industrial Complex , Haliburton , running the biggest Fracking operation in the US is the same fucking company rebuilding shit
@mrstudes was i talking about gas in my previous comment? or even about Iraq? LET ALONE Afghanistan? what are you even responding to? do you know how to read? also periods, commas and question marks don't go here . they go here. at the end of the sentence you retarded goof hippie.
I agree that having a pipeline is better than having trucks haul the oil 24/7, however, I don't agree on the location. This temperate rainforest is the only one in Canada and this type of rain forest is rare worldwide. I think an alternative location would be the best solution.
@KCareBTA your right and after this falls through the conservationists will return to the logging industry and they will ensure no trees are cut down, and then they will ensure BC has zero production and that we have a failing economy.
ALSO, there is a very high chance of leakage in pipelines, considering I've counted 55 leaks and spills referened by Wikipedia alone. I live in Alberta, and I have heard of at least 3 or 4 in the past year alone, one leak being the largest in Alberta's history. It's crude oil people. It's sand, grit and highly corrosive materials, treat it like liquid sandpaper.
They have to build it through your acre of land which you use to supply you and your family & friends with food for the year, not to mention, you've worked reaaaaalllly hard to spruce up your property to keep up with the Jones's. And all that work you put into, and that space you use for food supply and daily satisfaction, NEEDS to get torn up and occupied by Enbridge's pipeline because somebody halfway across the world wants it. Would you be A OK with that?
For those of you who think that pipelines have no impact on ecosystems, consider how you or your neighbors might feel if you each had, say 2 acres of land, with a house and yard on 1 acre and on the other, you had your whole year supply of food growing. Now, Enbridge NEEDS to build a pipeline through you and your neighbors property, that carries highly toxic death goop that more times than not causes severe illness to those exposed to it.
How does oil flow upstream against current? I don't think a pipe say the size of a BIG TREE would cause any harm the the FOREST and it's animals. I would have to guess that a pipe running through the forest has pretty close to zero impact to the environment once it's completed compared to the alternative...hundreds of trucks hauling and spewing out clouds of exhaust 24/7.
how could you be so obtuse, can you or enbridge control natural disasters ??? between the 240 km the tankers whould have to go through and the pipeline there is 3 fault lines. or even control a leak ????? not to mention roads would have to be built and uprooting of more land for the pipeline to go through, when this is done then BC wilil only have 45 jobs from enbridge for this project.

I can't see how a pipeline through the mountains can cause an oil tanker in the ocean to catastrophically crash and spill?

This area is huge! A pipeline would have minimal effect on these animals!
