My AP Literature teacher is teaching us Hamlet right now and let us watch part of one version. The second it said forward, not permanent, my mind didn't quite get it. But when it said best safety lies in fear, the whole song was running through my head.
My friend would be so proud of me that I recognized it!
i wasn't sure what i thought of this at first, but after another listen-through i've decided i like it. it's a creative way to make music without your own vocals and with minimal background, using words that truly mean something. reminds me of that song about vietnam, that uses those soundbites from documentaries on the average age of a soldier and the horrors of that war...
It's good to be Emilie. And to look like Emilie Autumn too. And it's just lovely when people think that I actually am her...
A red-haired lady with green Emilie's eyes, and her face. A violinist.
When I knew about her.. That was really marvellous! The first days. But now, and in the future I will just feel like an unusable copy, an experiment before something really perfect...
I actually have a bit of fondness for this Shakespeare mix. I saw the title and thought "hope she doesn't sing new lyrics around those of the great bard" and darn it she got it right! EA does not always make the best judgement calls on instrumentals for sure, but this is nice to listen to.
Hold it a fashion and a toy in blood, A violet in the youth of primy nature, Forward, not permanent, sweet, not lasting, The perfume and suppliance of a minute, No more.
I love how Emilie keeps referencing Shakespeare in her songs. :)
@SafetyPinPuffer hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha especially at 2:04-2:48 ahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha
BTW, this song is very much running parallel to the song by Alice & Chains. Snuffing the Rooster, the Rooster is the Chinese Zodiac sign. It was well foreseen I know who wrote th lyrics.
I mean you have to really listen because you almost think he is talking affectionately of a woman or poetiicly about nature. Oh no he is planning to kill someone. I think you may have heard his voice before huh? I shant tell his identity.
She doesn't necessarily sings because she is listening closely. This is the voice of the enemy, dismissing her power & authority & discussing her demise. He is plotting against her life, its subtle but.........
i love this song...though Emilie doesnt sing...its beautiful....in its own Gothic, sad yet understanding way...its calming....its very deep...its chills the bone yet soothes the core....i love this song...Emilie Autumn is like Beethoven.. and Amy Lee
Why does this song have less then 200,000 views?!
Can we at least get this song to have 200,000 views so more people can fall in love with Emilie Autumn's music. You will all get FREE imaginary tea as presents!
This is so Victoriandustrial ... which Emilie created this music genre unique to herself .. the English guy's accent reading Shakespeare in it is deeply haunting n moving too.
@Aragalinna It's pretty much all quoted from Shakespeare's Hamlet. Laertes says it to his sister, Ophelia, who is in love with Prince Hamlet. Nothing has happened yet, but he is cautioning her against getting too involved with him. Basically, he's saying that the Prince Hamlet only wants her now because she is pretty and young, but will leave her as soon as he sleeps with her.
Not sure if that's what Emilie means, but knowing Shakespeare and EAs love for him it very well could be.
@Aragalinna No problem! You seriously made me so happy! XD I'm such a bloody know-it-all and it's not every day that I get to explain about my favorite play without people telling me to shut up! XD I must be the strangest high-schooler alive, to have such an obsession with Shakespeare!
We'll always be here to help! Plague Rats need to stick together!
@10nantFangirl Haha it's all good! I'm a know-it-all myself, so I am familiar to the feelings you get whenever you talk about your favourite topic!!! :D I can't really understand Shakespeare, it's kinda embarrassing to admit haha, but yeah, i find him... Odd. XD not in a bad way though.
As for the Plague Rats, heck yes, we need to stick together. ;)
@Aragalinna There's nothing to be embarrassed about only 2 out of 18 or so kids in my AP Literature class can understand Shakespeare without going to nofearshakespeare or sparknotes
She opened her show in Austin with this, it's very dramatic to see all the Bloody Crumpets and Emilie coming out to this does she open every show with it?
@blackxveiledxbride91 She climbed up the back of the set while wearing her stilts, and she did that flaming hoop dance to Dead is the New Alive. So damn awesome.
@Iamaemo01 No, Aprella wasn't there. In truth, she's the one I know the least about. I love Maggot with her hooping and stiltwalking, I appreciate the Contessa because I'm learing to fire dance with poi and intend to learn fire eating at some point in the future, and I couldn't be a mostly straight man and not love Veronica, but I've never felt particularly drawn to Aprella. Btw, I had no idea they were all so short.
@MrJackLegend Thank you so much for inviting me to Elysium with you. You're the best cousin ever... and the "Mr" in front of your name makes sound so old. ;)
@Iamaemo01 Well, as much as I adore her Emilie is severely bipolar and has said herself that she can be hard to work with. Add to that the stresses normally involved in taking a show on the road, claustrophobia, cabin fever, lack of privacy, and being apart from the rest of your friends and family along with not being able to take time for your other pursuits and its a wonder they don't all implode and kill each other.
The term "best safety lie in fear' and a couple other meandering in the song come from the play Hamlet. In Act I Scene III Leartes speaks with Ophelia before he leaves and goes on this speal about how she should stay away from Hamlet as a lover. That he couldn't truly love her, not then at least, and to be careful. I suspect that the line "Perhaps he loves you now" at the end refers to Ophelia's suicide. When she dies she is loved more.
Oh my god. I saw her in concert last night and they opened with this and they each walked out from behind the clock, posing as they walked out of their shadows (Maggots posing with a sword, Veronica blowing a kiss, and Contessa pretending to gnaw on a human heart), walking stiffly and shaking a little, like maniacal robots. Then Four 'O Clock started and Emilie Came out in her rat mask. It was so fucking amazing.
@xxxBakaKamixxx The show's format and dialogue rarely, if at all, change so they're like that at all of them. They did it like that where I was in February too.
I am a heavy EA fan, dont get me wrong. My only problem is I dont necassarily get this song....Is there a point to it..or is it a bunch of Hamlet and quotes clashed together to a creepy beat? It seems oddly out of character.
@cbaird62 It's in which quotes she's chosen to use and repeat that the message of the song lies - like how an artist might make a collage out of different bits of paper.
@cbaird62 This depends on how you understand Hamlet. The album this is found on is Opheliac - Reference to Ophelia who eventually commits a suicide that looks a bit more like a murder in the play. "Best Safety Lies in Fear" is reference to the the speech Ophelia's brother states that she shouldn't peruse Hamlet as a lover because he wouldn't truly love her back.
How I sort of interpret this song (of course that dosen't mean I am right) Is that the infamous 'he' didn't truly love the Opheliac until the end of the song when 'Perhaps he loves you now'. 'now', I assume, is after the suicide.
Victoriandustrial - love it. Her violin solos, harpsichord, piano & spoon playing, gospel singing, firedancing, poetry, range of music & dancing with her rats and Shakespeare & asylum referances are so inspiring - the most talented & unique & insightful female in music - would love to see her live performances! Love her Elizabethan & Victorian costumes & make-up!
Yes, I bdid know that, since I looked it up, but I didn't understand the floweryness of the first couple of lines after the first set of "best safety lies in fear"s. I understood the message as a whole.
The whole thing is amazing, even if I don't quite understand what the lines at the beginning mean... Olde English isn't a language that comes easily to me unfortunately. The line at the end, though, anyone who has tried to caution a friend/sibling against dating someone or against having sex with them could understand. You can hear the gentleness in his voice as he tells his sister that she needs to guard her heart and therfore her virginity, but he was just too late...
@sesshypuppysbff This entire song is actually composed of quotes from Hamlet (which has been well known to be EAs favourite Shakespearean story) where Laertes warns Ophelia about Hamlets love for her, stating that it's only a passing fancy and that she should be weary and keep her heart safe and guarded, lest she be hurt.
@sesshypuppysbff just going to throw this out there because i'm a nerd like that. it's not old english, it's shakespearean english. old english sounds more like modern day german or dutch. there are few people who can speak and understand it. Shakepeare just liked to word this word things weird because it made his writing more poetic and enjoyable on stage. okay, sorry, i'm done now....
Guys, can you all stop spamming this vid with Taylor Swift and Beiber and what not? This isn't a public forum for you guys to argue in. This is a video for you to enjoy and listen to, and NOT compare it to other artists and whatever the hell you're doing.
@OpenCasket19 it makes her special because now a days almost no one writes their own lyrics, specially pop artists, EA writes poetry and combines that with her music and the experiences she has had, like when she was raped at 6 years old, or the bad relationships she has had, or when she tried to commit suicide and was admitted into a mental institution, plus creating a book about her experiences on that asylum.
Yeah, not likeTaylor Swift or anybody does the same thing or anything. Yu're right, she's the only person to use life experiances (which almost allmusicians do)
@OpenCasket19 i belive in taylor and kelly, but bieber? come on he's just a 14 year old little boy, he hasn't experienced real life, and he hasn't gone trough everything that taylor or Kelly had been trough, and his book wasn't even writted by him!
@OpenCasket19 No, most musicians don't do that. They have lyrics written for them, or write their own based upon the emotional and physical experience generalizations and to the lowest common denominator of their target audience. Shut your trap.
I love the 'Maybe he loves you now' and than the banging of heavy doors closing shut. I think it represents that 'Hamlet ' words caused Ophelia to enwraped in madness which the doors represent been locked in. Which exactly what happened to Emilie. It really creeps you out as well especailly when you listen to it at night.
I'm running a game of Exalted with my friends... And I rediscovered Emilie Autumn. Ah, such sweet, dark, wonderful, terrible music; I'm feeling truly inspired to terrorize my poor little pawns- er, player characters...
This song creeps the hell outta me, but DAYUMN is it good. Remixed Hamlet? Yes please.
Also, sh*t son, dat ending. It sounds like the lights in an impossibly long, menacing and nightmarish corridor (perhaps an asylum?) are being slammed off.
@FinalFallenFantasy That part about lights being slammed off... sh*t, gurl, don't say stuff like that after dark! Scares me as much as this song...should not be heard alone...
My AP Literature teacher is teaching us Hamlet right now and let us watch part of one version. The second it said forward, not permanent, my mind didn't quite get it. But when it said best safety lies in fear, the whole song was running through my head.

I understood the message as a whole.
sesshypuppysbff 1 year ago 5
The whole thing is amazing, even if I don't quite understand what the lines at the beginning mean... Olde English isn't a language that comes easily to me unfortunately. The line at the end, though, anyone who has tried to caution a friend/sibling against dating someone or against having sex with them could understand. You can hear the gentleness in his voice as he tells his sister that she needs to guard her heart and therfore her virginity, but he was just too late...
sesshypuppysbff 1 year ago
@sesshypuppysbff This entire song is actually composed of quotes from Hamlet (which has been well known to be EAs favourite Shakespearean story) where Laertes warns Ophelia about Hamlets love for her, stating that it's only a passing fancy and that she should be weary and keep her heart safe and guarded, lest she be hurt.
SuicidalPapercuts 1 year ago 8
@sesshypuppysbff just going to throw this out there because i'm a nerd like that. it's not old english, it's shakespearean english. old english sounds more like modern day german or dutch. there are few people who can speak and understand it. Shakepeare just liked to word this word things weird because it made his writing more poetic and enjoyable on stage. okay, sorry, i'm done now....

@ConverseAndSharpies ... I stand corrected... Either way, it sounds pretty and makes minimal sense to most high-schoolers.

Guys, can you all stop spamming this vid with Taylor Swift and Beiber and what not? This isn't a public forum for you guys to argue in. This is a video for you to enjoy and listen to, and NOT compare it to other artists and whatever the hell you're doing.

She is really just a great singer and violinist her lyrics for her songs are really not that great.
AntiChristClub 1 year ago
@AntiChristClub u have to understand the real meaning behind her lyrics, most of her songs are bases on experiences she has had, good but mostly bad.
Jazy1993 1 year ago
@Jazy1993
so her lyrics are based on what a lot of "artists" base theirs off of?
it doesnt make her special.
OpenCasket19 1 year ago
@OpenCasket19 it makes her special because now a days almost no one writes their own lyrics, specially pop artists, EA writes poetry and combines that with her music and the experiences she has had, like when she was raped at 6 years old, or the bad relationships she has had, or when she tried to commit suicide and was admitted into a mental institution, plus creating a book about her experiences on that asylum.
Jazy1993 1 year ago 3
@Jazy1993
Yeah, not likeTaylor Swift or anybody does the same thing or anything. Yu're right, she's the only person to use life experiances (which almost allmusicians do)
OpenCasket19 1 year ago
@OpenCasket19 can you name at least 5 famous pop artist from today who had written all of their lyrics based on their experiences?
Jazy1993 1 year ago
@Jazy1993
2,not 5 seeing how I don't listen to pop.
make it 3.
Taylor Swift, Kelly Clarkson, and Justin Beiber.
OpenCasket19 1 year ago
@OpenCasket19 i belive in taylor and kelly, but bieber? come on he's just a 14 year old little boy, he hasn't experienced real life, and he hasn't gone trough everything that taylor or Kelly had been trough, and his book wasn't even writted by him!
Jazy1993 1 year ago
@Jazy1993
Beiber was a joke :P
OpenCasket19 1 year ago
@OpenCasket19 No, most musicians don't do that. They have lyrics written for them, or write their own based upon the emotional and physical experience generalizations and to the lowest common denominator of their target audience. Shut your trap.

I love the 'Maybe he loves you now' and than the banging of heavy doors closing shut. I think it represents that 'Hamlet ' words caused Ophelia to enwraped in madness which the doors represent been locked in. Which exactly what happened to Emilie. It really creeps you out as well especailly when you listen to it at night.

This song creeps the hell outta me, but DAYUMN is it good. Remixed Hamlet? Yes please.
Also, sh*t son, dat ending. It sounds like the lights in an impossibly long, menacing and nightmarish corridor (perhaps an asylum?) are being slammed off.
One.

@FinalFallenFantasy That part about lights being slammed off... sh*t, gurl, don't say stuff like that after dark! Scares me as much as this song...should not be heard alone...
